Patron: Jack Pennington OAM SPRINT MARATHON 2009 AN ANNIVERSARY YEAR (Report by John Kennedy) 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of the Sprint Marathon and Jim White's 10th year as overall organiser. Congratulations on both achievements. This is an icon event for our club both for its novelty and for the unique annual winner's trophies which have been hand crafted by club stalwart Jack Thackray since the event’s inception. For those unfamiliar with the event it is a race between teams of 6 matched so that the average per km rates of each team are equal. It’s run on a 6km loop embracing Weston Park and Government House with the goal of relaying your team baton through 42km crowd. 40th Canberra Half Marathon Weekend 16/17th May 2009

The 40th Canberra Half Marathon and the 40th Annual Rex Foulkes Memorial Half Marathon will be held on Sunday 17th May. On Saturday 16th we will hold a 5k Fun Run and a 1.5k Mini Jog for children under 12 years as part of the Half Marathon Weekend.

The Saturday events are free to members of the ACTCCC.

ACT Vets Patron Jack Pennington OAM, is the founder of the Canberra Half Marathon. Along with Jack I hope to have some legends of the first half marathon either running or at least at the start of our 40th Half Marathon. Members and or ex members of ACTVAC who participated in that first Canberra Half Marathon some 39 years ago include Alan Wilson, Geoff Moore, Pat Fisher and ICP's Dave McInnis who came second.

To mark this very special occasion all half marathon finishers will receive a 40th Canberra Half Marathon Medal. As these medals need to be ordered well in advance of the event, I encourage you to enter early.

More details from www.canberrarunner.com.au or email [email protected] or phone 0407201078.

Thank you,

This prestigious award emphasises the importance of members being involved in all aspects of our track and field program; participating, officiating, socialising and helping with many of the mundane tasks necessary to conduct a successful athletics season. The original trophy was proposed and donated by Maggi and Alan Johnson during our first full season in 1982-83.
