2 Krishnamurti Foundation Bulletin 93 3 America 2019 s you leave the Pacific behind and enter into the country, winding over various small hills, The air is peaceful, quiet, full of that strange dignity of A the country, you enter the valley. It is quiet, perfumed almost untouched by man. You enter into this valley, which is almost like a vast cup, a nest. Then you leave the little village and climb to about 1,400 feet, passing rows and with orange rows of orange orchards and groves. The air is perfumed with orange blossom. The whole valley is filled with that blossom scent. And the smell of it is in your mind, in your heart, in your whole body. And there is a quietness in the mountains, a dignity. And each time you look at those hills and the high mountain, which is over 6,000 feet, you are really surprised that such a country exists. Each time you come to this quiet, peaceful valley there is a feeling of strange aloofness, of deep silence, and the vast spreading of slow time. And the mountains that morning were extraordinarily beautiful. You could almost touch them. The majesty, the vast sense of permanency is there in them. And you enter quietly into the house where you have lived for over sixty years and the atmosphere, the air, is, if one can use that word, holy; you can feel it. As it has rained considerably, for it is the rainy season, all the hills and the little folds of the mountain are green, flourishing, full – the earth is smiling with such delight, with some deep quiet understanding of its own existence.

  • Whole Teachers: a Holistic Education Perspective on Krishnamurti's
Whole Teachers: A Holistic Education Perspective on Krishnamurti‘s Educational Philosophy by Anbananthan Rathnam A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Anbananthan Rathnam 2013 Whole Teachers: A Holistic Education Perspective on Krishnamurti‘s Educational Philosophy Anbananthan Rathnam Doctor of Philosophy Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning University of Toronto 2013 Abstract The purpose of this qualitative research study, which utilizes a phenomenological inquiry method, is to inquire into the awareness of what it means to be a whole teacher from the perspective of the philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurti, a philosopher/spiritual teacher. Four participants (teachers) were interviewed from the Oak Grove School, an alternative, holistic school founded by Krishnamurti in 1974. This inquiry probed into teachers‘ thinking, teachers‘ lives, teachers‘ inner lives, teachers‘ contemplative practices, teachers‘ calling/vocation and teachers‘ pedagogy. The findings of this inquiry reveal the awareness that exists among the participants with regards to their understanding of Krishnamurti‘s educational philosophy and the way in which this philosophy has shaped their lives and the lives of their students (both implicit- ly and explicitly) The findings from this research further show that Krishnamurti‘s philosophy has certainly had an impact on the participants‘ wholeness. Krishnamurti was never interested in imposing his philosophy on the teachers to think in a narrow groove. Rather, he challenged them to arrive at wholeness or a holistic approach towards living by their own volition, by putting aside all philosophy, including his own.

He claimed alle- giance to no caste, nation- ality, or religion and was Photo by Mark Edwards © KFT bound by no tradition. His extensive teachings are published in more than 75 books, 2000 audios and 650 videos. Thus far, over 4 million copies of his books have been sold in 22 languages. Together with the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa, Krishnamurti was declared by Time magazine to be one of the five saints of the 20th century. He travelled the world for 65 years speaking to large audiences until the end of his life at age 90. He rejected all spiritual and psychological authority, including his own. He maintained that it is necessary for human beings to free themselves from their age-old conditioning through the direct under- standing of the working of their minds. This self-knowledge might then bring about a profound change in human consciousness. It was clear to him that no political, social or economic strategies can transform the chaotic and violent world into a life of goodness, love and compassion. It can only be transformed through a total inner revolution brought about through direct observation and insight. Krishnamurti’s stature as an original religious philosopher attracted traditional and non- traditional thinkers. He bridged science and religion.

Krishnamurti and the Dance of Dialogue: Instigating insight in higher education by Jerry Flexer A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS In the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies © Jerry Flexer, 2019 University of Victoria All rights reserved. This thesis may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or other means, without the permission of the author. Supervisory Committee Krishnamurti and the Dance of Dialogue: Instigating insight in higher education by Jerry Flexer Supervisory Committee Dr. Martin Adam, Supervisor Department of Pacific and Asian Studies Dr. Michael Bodden, Departmental Member Department of Pacific and Asian Studies Page ii of 148 Abstract This study examines the dialogic approach of the Indian-born educational philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895 – 1986), who had developed his own unique approach to dialogue with small groups. The research considered two questions. First, whether Krishnamurti’s dialogic approach is one that could be described by specific strategies and techniques; and second, whether this approach and its strategies and techniques could be adapted, adopted, or emulated for use in higher education. In Chapter One of the paper, Krishnamurti’s general philosophy and his specific philosophy of education are reviewed, with the aim of placing his dialogic approach within the context of his educational philosophy. The second chapter addresses the study’s research questions by presenting a two-part analysis of a transcript of the one-hour dialogue that took place in California in 1981 between Krishnamurti and six American college students. First, even though he used no notes and no lesson plan, the thematic content analysis of this particular dialogue shows that relevant content had in fact been covered and learned, and that this content had emerged as a consequence of Krishnamurti’s direction as a facilitator of learning.
