Black Hills Bridges Therapeutic Foster Homes Take Shape

The Black Hills Building Bridges of Hope and Healing capital campaign to build two therapeutic foster homes (one for six boys and one for six girls) and four double-occupancy independent living apartments is well underway. The first home, seen above, will be a home for girls. The home is scheduled to open during the summer of 2020. To date we have raised $2,213,687.03 of the $3 million campaign. We need to raise an additional $300,000 to begin construction on the second home.

Recently, the world has been awakened again to the reality of our vulnerability. The Coronavirus outbreak reminds us that we are not in control, and it has left many of us feeling anxious or even scared about our future. Although the facts and opinions seem to change daily, I think most would agree that we all have thought about loved ones, our investments and what tomorrow may bring. At Abbott House, we are helping children who have lived with this feeling of vulnerability for much of their lives. Not about this virus, but about their lives. You see, children who have lived through abuse, neglect, and other negative events understand this feeling of not being in control. Not knowing if you will eat today or who might end up at your house tonight are things some children have to deal with. In our programs, we see the fallout from these life events. We have specialty programming to create “felt” safety and rebuild relationships with those children who have lived with Eric Klooz this uncertainty and fear in their young lives. We understand that if we can build trusting Executive Director relationships and then help children to multiply those relationships, we will help those children heal and change their lives for the better. Although we must walk through the storm with each young person that comes to us, we know that the sun will come up again. Re-instilling hope is what Abbott House is all about and we have been blessed in doing that work for 80 years. As you continue making decisions for your families and loved ones, remember to have hope and trust that better days will come. In this time of uncertainty, Abbott House is here and continuing to support those in need. We would not be able to do it without you. Thank you again for all you do to support our work and the young lives that we are able to transform from anxiety and worry to strength and hope. • Another middle schooler con9nues to make huge academic strides. DeMaris Paulson Mathison Nesheim grew up on a ranch northwest of Philip, S.D. She married Chuck Mathison in 1972. Chuck died in 1989 at the age of 45. Thirteen years later, in 2002, DeMaris married Ervin Nesheim, a high school classmate. DeMaris shares two children with Chuck. Jodie, who died of cancer at the age of 36, was a principal in a residential school much like Abbott House and Jason, a computer engineer who is married to Mary, and together they have three adopted children with special needs. DeMaris has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northern State University in Elementary Education and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Guam. After graduating from college, she taught in Alaska, England and Guam. In 1976, DeMaris stopped teaching elementary children to become the owner of three Taco John’s restaurants, one in Marshalltown, Iowa and two in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Following Chuck’s death, she continued to own and manage the Taco John’s store in Marshalltown until 2007. She also participated in Leadership Marshalltown, Iowa Leadership and served on several local boards. DeMaris was introduced to the Abbott House during a tour with the South Dakota Community Foundation board. “I was impressed with the staff and the school. It was apparent that the staff was committed to doing the best job they could dealing with very demanding children,” she said. “Then I noticed that Abbott House was building group homes in Rapid City with apartment to continue to help foster kids when they age out. Helping aged out young adults has been a big concern to me for a long time. I am thankful Abbott House is addressing this need.” DeMaris serves on several non-profit organizations including the SDCF Board of Directors, the Children’s Home Society Board of Directors, the Salvation Army of the Black Hills Advisory Board, and Lutheran Outdoors in South Dakota endowment committee. She has worked on many projects for Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota at their residential group home in Spearfish. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, Bible studies, walking and playing tennis. “Serving on the board to help kids who don’t have a chance has been rewarding and honors the memory of my dear daughter Jodie,” DeMaris said. Welcome to the Abbott House Board of Directors DeMaris!

Cante Heart

Cante Heart is the proud mother of three daughters. As an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Cante considers the Black Hills her home. She spent the majority of her life in North and South Dakota. She graduated from Rapid City Central High School and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Black Hills State and Oglala Lakota College. Cante’s Lakota name is KoKikPapiWin, which means “They’re Afraid of Her.” She was given this name “Not because I am scary, but because I have spoken the truth since I was a little girl,” she said. “To live up to my name, I will continue to speak out on injustices of indigenous people.” Cante also serves on the board of directors for the initiative “Dignity,” and modeled for the sculpture in Chamberlain. Cante has spent most of her career working in community organizing. “I love uplifting Indigenous voices and bridging the gap between race relations,” Cante said. “As Lakota people, we believe all children are sacred. In Lakota, the word for children is Wakanyeja (Wakahh-ye-jha), which means ‘sacred beings.’ Our children are our future, and it is important to nurture and cherish them. I will do anything in my power to uplift and encourage our youth to have the best future and opportunities possible.” Cante is a bridge builder who is always interested in meeting new people and helping in her community. “Abbott House gives our youth a better future,” Cante said. “I believe we (Abbott House and Cante) share the same mission, when we value and cherish the children.” Cante enjoys playing basketball, softball and golf, and spending time with her daughters.
