TBA-SBiz-Centers-Ghana-Justification2019-01-13.docx Page 1 of 6 Greater Accra Region The capital region of Ghana is about 97% electrification rate and serve a population of about 3.9 million. However, the 10% rural population which are also part of the 8.2% illiterate. And as such requires innovative solution to spur development of these districts. The region is majorly dominated by the service industry with only 2.11% who are into agriculture, forestry and fishery with fisheries being the major since its located on the coast to the Gulf of Guinea. Ashanti Region This is the most populated region in Ghana majorly due to migration from the Northern part of the country. Electricity access is about 82% however, blackout is common during both peak and off rainfall seasons when the hydro-dams are at full or least capacity. Rural population is about 40% which gives ThinkBiz Africa Initiative to rewrite the story of development through creation of jobs and education opportunities through the SBiz centers. There are 50 Districts in the region. The rural population are mostly located in districts very far from the Kumasi Metropolis. Most of the targeted group by the ThinkBiz project in this region are farmers. Ejura/Sekyedumase Cash crops like cocoa and cashew Offinso North are major. TBA-SBiz-Centers-Ghana-Justification2019-01-13.docx Page 2 of 6 Central Region Central region is also along the coast with 81% people having access to electricity and 53% rural population. The fourteen SBiz centers shall be located across 10 districts out of the 20 in the region. These 10 districts are selected because of the concentration of the fishing businesses despite the lack of constant access to electricity. Most of the communities in these districts are rural and the people are often unable to meet their basic necessities. As such, implementing solar kiosks with mini Upper Denkyira West grids and cold stores in this region will help provide access to electricity while Upper Denkyira East dealing with the issue of lack of storage Assin North issues for the fish farmers. Volta region, taking its name from the famous Volta lake Nkwanta North is made up of 25 districts. This is the main region that was impacted by the construction of the Akosombo dam. Nkwanta South Many island villages and communities which are not Krachi Ntsumuru connected to the national grid. About 65 % of the population who are mostly located in the urban districts Krachi West and towns have access to electricity. Volta region has a Krachi East Kadjebi rural population of about 66 % implying that majority of them have not known what is like to use electricity in Jasikan their daily activities. Micro-grids are being promoted by both NGOs and the government in the region to improve Hohoe rural electrification. Due to the special situation in the Kpando Afadjato South region, 34 SBiz centers are proposed targeting the island communities. Ho South Dayi

Northern Region Northern region is one of the three regions with least access to electricity in Ghana. About 50% of the population have no access to electricity and rural population is as high as 70%. Literacy rate is about 60 % of the population and farming is the major economic activity. We propose 34 SBiz centers to be spread across the 26 districts excluding the capital (Tamale) and peri-urban Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo East Mamprusi areas. SBiz centers will help boost the economic West Mamprusi Mamprugo Moaduri activity (farming) in the region. TBA-SBiz-Centers-Ghana-Justification2019-01-13.docx Page 5 of 6 Upper East Region Electricity access in the Upper East region of Ghana was about 44% in the last population and housing census carried out in 2010. Rural population is about 80% with illiteracy rate at 36%. This region has enough irradiation to promote SBiz centers which will contribute to both the educational and economic empowerment of inhabitants. A total of 18 SBiz centers are proposed for the region which will be distributed across the 18 districts. The reason for the low number of SBiz centers despite the need in the region is due to the low income situation in the region since the purpose of the SBiz to raise funds that will sustain the activities of elibrary and conference centers.

Upper West Region This is the region with the least access to electricity in Ghana at about 40% and the highest rural population of 84%. Illiteracy is at about 37 % of the population and inhabits the highest population leaving below the poverty mark of UN. We propose 16 SBiz centers to contribute to the development of the region.
