Martin Luther King Jr. was born to Reverend Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams King on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. King Jr. was both a Baptist minister as well as being a prominent leader in the African American Civil Rights Movement. King started the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) in 1957 and majorly impacted the race relations in the United States of America. It was through his unrelenting e orts that the legal segregation of individuals of African-American origin came to an end in the South as well as in other parts of the country. His activism also played a crucial role in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Though the results achieved by King were of mammoth proportions, the means used were simple and non-violent in nature. He was inuenced by MK Gandhi who had led the non-violence movement in India against British colonization. For his e orts in bringing about equality and maintaining peace in the community, Martin Luther King Jr. was award- ed the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, among a host of other honors. His speech, ‘I Have a Dream,’ during the March on Washington in 1963 established him as one of the best orators the country had ever seen as well as one of the most iconic African-American leaders in the nation’s history. In 1968, King was assassinated at the age of 39 by James Earl Ray.
