Early Stages of Fishes in the Western North Atlantic Ocean Volume
ISBN 0-9689167-4-x Early Stages of Fishes in the Western North Atlantic Ocean (Davis Strait, Southern Greenland and Flemish Cap to Cape Hatteras) Volume One Acipenseriformes through Syngnathiformes Michael P. Fahay ii Early Stages of Fishes in the Western North Atlantic Ocean iii Dedication This monograph is dedicated to those highly skilled larval fish illustrators whose talents and efforts have greatly facilitated the study of fish ontogeny. The works of many of those fine illustrators grace these pages. iv Early Stages of Fishes in the Western North Atlantic Ocean v Preface The contents of this monograph are a revision and update of an earlier atlas describing the eggs and larvae of western Atlantic marine fishes occurring between the Scotian Shelf and Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (Fahay, 1983). The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. Michael Fahay 241 Sabino Road West Bath, Maine 04530 U.S.A. vi Acknowledgements I greatly appreciate the help provided by a number of very knowledgeable friends and colleagues dur- ing the preparation of this monograph. Jon Hare undertook a painstakingly critical review of the entire monograph, corrected omissions, inconsistencies, and errors of fact, and made suggestions which markedly improved its organization and presentation. -
How Do Seagrasses Face Herbivory? a Case of Study in Cadiz Bay
How do seagrasses face herbivory? A case of study in Cadiz bay Isabel Casal*1, Fernando G. Brun1 and Eva Zub´ıa2 *Corresponding author: [email protected] 1Department of Biology (Ecology Area), University of C´adiz,Puerto Real (C´adiz)Spain 2Department of Organic Chemistry, University of C´adiz,Puerto Real (C´adiz),Spain Keywords: Herbivory, Marine Angiosperms, Natural Products Introduction The marine angiosperms or seagrasses are vascular plants with leaves, rhizomes, roots, flowers and seeds that inhabit marine environment. Seagrasses are characterized by developing extensive crowded meadows in shallow coastal areas, forming one of the most important coastal habitats of the biosphere, bearing a great ecological value because of the services and functions they provide, both to humans and marine ecosystems. Seagrasses are distributed along all the coasts of the world, except in Antarctica (Robertson and Mann, 1984) while only four species are found in the Mediterranean Sea: Zostera noltei Hornemann (1832), Zostera marina Linnaeus (1753), Cymodocea nodosa Ascherson (1870) and Posidonia oceanica (Linnaeus) Delile (1813). With the exception of the P. oceanica, the other three species coexist in the Bay of Cadiz (Figure1, modified from Brun et al.(2015)). Figure 1: (A) Seagrass habitats in the Bay of Cadiz (B) Zostera noltei (C) Cymodocea nodosa (D) Zostera marina. 1 Marine angiosperms possess a secondary metabolism that synthetizes specific organic compounds known as natural products. These compounds play important roles in the survival of the plants, including their involvement in chemical defence mechanisms. One of the ecological functions played by these natural products could be their deterrent capacity against herbivores. -

Royal Palm Beach (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. ~ High-resolution 1986 Landsat TM images of the Adriatic coast of Albania have been compared with aerial photographs eusss___ :........a..... ~ obtained in 1943, and published literature, in order to decipher the sedimentary architecture and evolution of the WdW- __a late-Holocene deposits of the coastal plain. This coastline is microtidal and dominated by wave action; and abundant ... a:= sediment is supplied by rivers draining the uplifted mountainous interior of this tectonically active region. The coastal plain has prograded up to 40 km since relative sea level rise slowed down around 6000 years BP. The inland parts of the coastal plain are dominated by parallel storm beach ridges whilst the coastal fringe exhibits a diversity of symmetrical to asymmetrical wave-dominated deltas and spit-deltas encompassing cut-off lagoons. A genetic model to explain the variability of wave-dominated deltas on the Albanian coast is proposed showing a spectrum of forms between prograding symmetrical cuspate deltas formed by bi-directionallongshore drift and highly asymmetrical spit deltas formed by uni-directional longshore drift. -

The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

The Geological Setting of Durrës - Rodon Region in Albania
J.Int. Environmental Application & Science, Vol. 15(2): 41-47 (2020) Research Paper The Geological Setting of Durrës - Rodon Region in Albania Arjol Lule∗, Shaqir Nazaj Faculty of Geology and Mining, Tirana, Albania; Faculty of Geology and Mining, Tirana, Albania. Received March 04, 2020; Accepted April 21, 2020 Abstract: The object of this paper are some considerations on the geologic features of the region north to Shkumbin river in Albania based on the latest data from the complex studies on the relations of Kruja and Ionian zones with the South Adriatic basin. The paper highlights the tectonic features of the prognosis deep structures, facies types etc. The folding phases for this region are of Chattian, Burdigalian and Tortonian when the structures of the eastern part of Kruja zone are folded at an earlier geologic time as compared to the structures foreseen to be encountered at the western part of region. The lower tectonic stage in the studied region, as compared to the know structures of Ionian zone to the south and of Kruja zone in the east, appear with less developed tectonics and less effected by the folding tectonic phases. The influence of these folding phases over Kruja and Ionian tectonic zones has been considerable causing a mighty folding of structures and at the same time their big overlapping to the west. These facts drive us to the conclusion that the Ionian zone structures and consequently the separate tectonic belts within this zone must not extent to the north. Key words: Kruja and Ionian zone, tectonic, structures. Introduction The study region represents a very complicated geological area, where three tectonic zones collides: 1- Kruja tectonic zone in the east; 2- Ionian tectonic zone in the south; 3- Southern extension of the Adriatic Basin, Fig.1. -

By speculatively reversing the order of landscape perception from land to water, the coastline becomes a flexible device capable of responding to unpredictable future events - natural disasters related to climate change (rising sea levels), or globally challenging socio-political phenomena (such as mass migration growing in scope, complexity and impact). The experimental design approach involves the design and representation of an incremental waterscape. By reversing the morphological perception of the coastal landscape and making a set of tactical selections in natural and artificial landscapes, the students highlighted the territory’s potential. With new awareness, they proposed site-specific interventions along the coast and inland, -
