1. INTRODUCTION

As I have been attending the course Teorie překladu , taught by Mgr. Němec, I have chosen the theme Translation and Analysis for my final work. I have discovered that translating is not only a kind of puzzle, but also very interesting. I was always under the impression that translation is very easy and simple and it would not be difficult to translate texts from English to Czech. However, after a few lessons I have realized that this is not the case. There are many rules that a good translator should follow in order to create a text which would be understandable for every reader of the target language.

I have chosen the book Lord of the Flies, by William Golding for my final thesis. This book is his masterpiece. And I was amazed by the range of vocabularies and florid language after reading it for the first time. Another reason why I have chosen this book was that the only translation into the Czech language is more than forty years old, which gives me the opportunity to compare my work and convey a new translation. I would like to achieve this using the same florid language which was used in the original book.

I will introduce the author of the book, his life, and his work in the first part of my thesis. I will also describe the book Lord of the Flies in more detail and present the main characters.

In the second part I will translate the semifinal, and part of the final chapter of the book. I selected these two chapters because they are full of action and amazing descriptions of the main character’s feelings.

The third section will deal with the theory of translation and techniques which are used for translating today. I will provide many examples from my practical part for better comprehension. In this theoretical part I will also focus on Heda Kovályová’s translation and compare it with my solutions.

2. WILLIAM GOLDING

Sir William Gerald Golding was born in Cornwell, England, in September 1911. He attended Oxford University as an undergraduate at Brasenose College, where he read Natural Sciences for two years before transferring to English Literature. His first book was published in 1934, called Poems . After graduating from Oxford, he worked briefly as a theatre actor and director, wrote poetry, and then became a schoolteacher. When he started his teaching practice at Bishop Wordsworth’s School, he met his future wife

Ann Brookfield. They had two children, David and Judith Diana. (1)

In 1941 he joined the navy where he served for five years. His first active service was aboard HMS 1 Galatea in the North Atlantic. Then he went to Liverpool and in 1942 he was seconded to MD1 2. Later he was trained in Landing Crafts equipment with rocket guns and he took part in the naval support for the D Day landings and the invasion of Walcheren. After the end of the World War II he left the navy and returned to Bishop Wordsworth’s

From 1952 he started to write his novels, stories, and plays. He resigned from Bishop Wordsworth’s School and became full time writer in 1962. William Golding died of 3 heart failure in 1993 and was buried in the village churchyard at Bowerchalke . (2)

William Golding was awarded several times during his life. He won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Darkness Visible in 1979. Just one year after he won the Booker McConnell Prize for Rites of Passage and finally he was awarded the Nobel

Prize for Literature in 1983. Five years later, he was knighted. (2)

2.1. List of literary works

1952 He began work on a novel he called ‘Strangers from Within’. 1953 In January he started sending the novel to publishers. Many rejected it, until in September Golding sent it to Faber and Faber, where it was eventually accepted. 1954 In September, after changes to the text, it was published as Lord of the Flies . 1955 The Inheritors was published. 1956 Pincher Martin was published. Golding also contributed the story ‘Envoy Extraordinary’ to Sometime, Never: three tales of the imagination (published by Eyre and Spottiswoode). The other two stories were by John Wyndham and Mervyn Peake. 19567 By now Golding had some involvement with literary life in London. He started writing for The Bookman and The Listener , and began broadcasting. 1958 The Brass Butterfly , his play starring Alistair Sim and adapted from his story ‘Envoy Extraordinary’, opened in Oxford on 24 February, toured the provinces, and then ran for a month in London. The text of the play was published in July. 1959 In October Free Fall was published. 1962 While in America Golding worked on drafts of The Spire , as well as delivering the first version of his lecture ‘Fable’, on Lord of the Flies . 1964 The Spire was published in April. 1965 Golding collected some of his essays and reviews in The Hot Gates . 1967 The Pyramid was published in book form in June. 1971 The Scorpion God , which reprinted ‘Envoy Extraordinary’ and added two new stories, was published in October. From the autumn of 1971 he kept a journal, which started as a record of dreams but gradually became an account of his attempts to write, and of personal experiences. 1979 Darkness Visible was published. 1980 Rites of Passage was published. 1982 A Moving Target , a new collection of essays and reviews, was published.

1984 The Paper Men was published. 1985 An Egyptian Journal was published. 1986 Faber and Faber published William Golding: The Man and his Books. A

Tribute on his 75 th Birthday , edited by John Carey. 1987 Close Quarters was published, a sequel to Rites of Passage. 1989 Fire Down Below , the final novel of the Sea Trilogy, was published, bringing its hero Edmund Talbot to Australia. 1991 He revised the separate volumes of his Sea Trilogy, to make a single volume, To the Ends of the Earth .

1995 In June Golding’s last novel, The Double Tongue , was published. (4)

2.2. Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies was published in 1954 and it was Golding’s first novel. At the time it was not a great success but during 1955 it became a bestseller. By the 1960’s it was required by many schools and colleges. (5)

The novel has been adapted for radio, dramatized for the stage and made into a film by Peter Brook in 1963 and again in 1990 by Harry Hook, but with less success. Both versions stray from the novel however the latter version differs from the novel much more than the first one.

The war had left deep scars on Golding’s heart. He became a witness of inhumane suffering, and what was worse, he was a part of it.

“Golding got the idea for the book because of his experiences in the war, where he served in the Navy and learned the inherent sinfulness of man. It is interesting that the war is mentioned indirectly at the beginning and end of the novel but nowhere in between. This is a remarkable literary device of Golding.” (6)

Lord of the Flies is a fictional novel about a group of English schoolboys involved in a plane crash on a deserted island. Only the boys survived the crash, and they are left to rely on themselves to stay alive.

In the beginning they are trying to set some rules (the Conch), behave peacefully, achieve common goals, and do everything they can in the hope of being rescued. But without any law and order, some boys within the group begin to rebel. The group eventually splits into two parts, where one is trying to follow the rules in the hope of being rescued, while the other is interested only in violence, disorder and anarchy. They are acting like savages and nothing is forbidden for them, even murder. Any attempts of peace and cooperation are rejected, and in the end, the hero and original Chief is alone and hunted by the others. The rescue comes just in time.

Here I would like to quote from Golding’s official website. I consider it quite important to mention or point out the importance of symbolism in the novel.

“(...) the Conch has been used as a symbol for explaining things as diverse as internet protocols and voting structures; Piggy's spectacles and physique have become a recognisable icon.” (7)

The stress is put on what is the right thing and it is visible through the whole novel. The Conch expresses the law, power and authority, which is eventually destroyed by human foolishness and madness. Piggy’s spectacles also become a major spot in the story and his whole character is the most sophisticated and well developed.

The interpretations of the Lord of the Flies differentiate over the years since its first publication.

During the 1950s and 1960s, readers believed that the book dramatized the history of civilization. They thought that the topic contained religious issues such as sin and the nature of good and evil. Another interpretation was based on the theory of the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. He claimed that the human mind is the site of a constant fight amongst different stimulations – the id (needs and desires), the ego (the conscious, rational mind), and the superego (the sense of conscience and morality). Many of the readers and critics are convinced that the novel is a criticism of the social and political institutions of the West. (8)

I think that all of these constructions are somehow incorporated in the book and though the story appears to be for children at first sight, the deep essence of people’s behaviour, the nature and function of law, the difference between good and evil, all contribute to make this novel much more profound than a simple children’s novel.

2.3. Main characters

Ralph Fairhaired Ralph is one of the main characters of the book. He is a natural leader, and after discovering the Conch, he is chosen as the chief. Ralph makes it his job to lay down rules and try to organise a society. He is charismatic, dominant and fearless, with one clear goal – to be rescued. As the others rebel, Ralph sticks to his guns, and he ultimately ends up being left to survive on his own, chased by the transformed savage boys.

“He was old enough, twelve years and a few months, to have lost the prominent tummy of childhood; and not yet old enough for adolescence to have made him awkward. You could see that he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil.” (Golding 1958: 10)

Piggy Piggy is a little fat boy who wears spectacles and suffers from asthma. He is very smart and quickly befriends Ralph. He recognizes that he can express his views through him. Due to his size, looks and inability to work, he is the outsider of the group. However, Piggy is eventually accepted by them, albeit grudgingly, when they discover that his glasses can be used to ignite fires.

“That’s right. Can’t catch my breath. I was the only boy in our school what had asthma,” said the fat boy with a touch of pride. “And I’ve been wearing specs since I was three.” (Golding 1958: 9)

Jack Merridew When Ralph becomes the initial leader, Jack becomes upset, for he wanted that position but instead becomes the leader of the hunters. Jack leads the boys from civilized young men into savages through the novel. He is malicious and animalistic. As structure breaks down, Jack forms his own separate group seperating from Ralph and the rest of the group. Jack is a cruel bully, who is constantly violent and threatens those below him. He breaks Piggy's glasses and leads the others towards Piggy's murder.

“(...) he was tall, thin, and bony: and his hair was red beneath the black cap. His face was crumpled and freckled, and ugly without silliness. Out of this face stared two light blue eyes, frustrated now, and turning, or ready to turn, to anger.” (Golding: 1958: 21)

4. THE THEORETICAL PART OF THE THESIS

The theoretical part of my final thesis deals with the traditional shifts of translation. I distributed this section into several subchapters, in order to bring in a wellarranged overview of translation methods I have worked with.

The next part of the thesis devotes attention to deeper analysis of the colloquial direct speech. The end of the theoretical work is focused on the comparison of my translation to Heda Kovalyová’s translation.

4.1. Traditional shifts of translation

There are many traditional translating methods. The most famous are from Canadian authors Vinay and Darbelnet who use seven traditional shifts that solve the problem of lack of the direct equivalents. Another American theorist of translation Joseph L. Malone brings in nine translation procedures.

In the first part of my theoretical work I would like to present traditional translating methods and procedures defined by an American theorist Gerard VázquezAyora. He claims that there are eight strategic processes that may help to capture good translation practices. Transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation, amplification, explicitation, pretermission and compensation will be the centre of my analysis in this chapter. Most of them I used in my practical part of the thesis and thus they are provided by examples.

4.1.1. TRANSPOSITION

Transposition is a translating technique where the text of a SL (Source Language) has some grammatical composition which must be changed in some way when we translate it into a TL (Target Language). This is a result of different language systems and without this necessary change in grammar the translated text would not be understandable for the reader.

This process is used mainly in cases where the grammatical rules in the TL disallow the usage of the same grammatical category as in the SL or where the rules allow it but the translator needs to change these categories.

Golding’s original: My translation: “—only louder, of course .” „—jenom hlasitějc, to je jasný .“

This example from the translation is an instance of the translator’s needs. I did not want to use the literary language in the case of direct speech as I do not think that a ten years old boy would use such a word (in TL). So I replaced the original adverb “of course” by a whole phrase “to je jasný” because it seems to me more appropriate than “samozřejmě”.

Golding’s original: My translation: Ralph tried to attach a meaning to this Ralph se snažil najít v té odpovědi but could not . smysl, ale marně .

In this case I changed the original verb “could not” into an adverb “marně” as I consider it more appropriate in Czech. The use of “nešlo to” or “nemohl” would not be a mistake from the grammatical point of view however the stylistic approach forced me to use this expression.

4.1.2. MODULATION

Modulation is connected with point of view. Each translator has different feelings about the words, phrases or the whole text. Modulation deals not only with the change of point of view but also with the change of meanings of some words. Sometimes the fixed expressions and phrases of SL are not used in the same way in TL. And this is the translator’s work to modulate such utterances in an appropriate meaning.

Golding’s original: My translation: Grey, feathery ashes scurried hither Jeho dech zvedl oblak jemného and thither at his breath but no spark popela , ale ani jediná jiskřička shone among them. nezasvítila.

I think these modulations were really necessary as we do not use expressions like “péřovitý popel” in the TL (the Czech language). The sentence construction would not be the same because we may use another stable phrase that is more suitable in this case.

Golding’s original: My translation: “You mind out—see?” „Vy si teda koledujete!“

In this example, which is taken from the part where one of the boys is trying to frighten the others, the modulation is also important. Translation of the direct speech to the letter would not convey the required meaning. The outcome would not fulfil the conditions of the same meaning.

4.1.3. EQUIVALENCE

According to the Routledge Encyclopedia of Translation Studies edited by Mona Baker, the equivalence is not easy to define. Many theorists have different opinions on this particular field in translation:

“Equivalence is a central concept in translation theory, but it is also a controversial one. Approaches to the question of equivalence can differ radically: some theorists define translation in terms of equivalence relations (Catford 1965; Nida and Taber 1969; Toury 1980a; Pym 1992a, 1995; Koller 1995) while others reject the theoretical notion of equivalence, claiming it is either irrelevant (SnellHornby 1988) or damaging (Gentzler 1993) to translation studies. Yet other theorists steer a middle course: Baker uses the notion of equivalence “for the sake of convenience – because most translators are used to it rather than because it has any theoretical status” (1992: 56). Thus equivalence is variously regarded as a necessary condition for translation, an obstacle to progress in translation studies, or a useful category for describing translations. Proponents of equivalencebased theories of translation usually define equivalence as the relationship between a source text (ST) and a target text (TT) that allows the TT to be considered as a translation of the ST in the first plae. Equivalence relationships are also said to hold between parts of STs and parts of TTs.” (Baker 2005: 77)

The last quotation is the most general and I think also the most understandable:

“A textual equivalent is defined as ‘any TL text or portion of text which is observed [. . .] to be the equivalent of a given SL text or portion of text’.”

(Catford 1965: 27).

As I have shown above, there are many theories or opinions on equivalence, but I will follow Knittlová’s three types of lexical equivalence.

4.1.3.1. Absolute or total equivalence

Absolute equivalence includes words and expressions that have the same or close meaning in a target language. Most of these words are symmetric also in a formal aspect (oneword or multiword equivalents).

4.1.3.2. Partial equivalence

The English and the Czech language differentiate not only in typology but also in culture, history and traditions. Diversity in collocations and phraseology causes that most of the equivalents are usually partial. According to Knittlová, this partiality may cover these differences: “a) formální b) významově denotační c) významově konotační d) pragmatické” (Knittlová 2000: 35)

Most of these differences appear in combinations. Each type mentioned above has several subtypes.

a) Formal differences Multi-word – one-word expressions

The English language is analytic and has more analytical multiword expressions. In the same time these expressions are more explicit than the Czech language which is considered to be synthetic and flexional. It means that when a multiword expression is used in English, we usually need only a oneword expression. (We are able to convey the right meaning even in one word.)

We could translate this expression into TL also as “jedna slza” or “jedna kapka slzy” but all of these words express the same and there is no need to translate every single word. It would only prolong the target text without any contribution.

Explicitness – implicitness

Multiword expressions are usually more explicit and contain more information. Sometimes it is not possible to translate an expression easily and so translators add some extra information, which leads to prolongation of a target text. This is not considered desirable in translation but most of the texts translated in this longer and more explicit way are usually more readable. In the same way as we add some extra information we may also compress the text, which is usually left to a decision of each translator.

The verb “freed” may be translated as “osvobozeni” into the Czech language but I chose the longer expression in this case to make the whole sentence more readable.

b) Differences in denotation

Specification

The most typical semantic difference between lexical units in English text and its Czech equivalents lies in a fact that these equivalents contain some important extra information and this is what we call specification or substitution by hyponym.

Golding’s original: My translation: “We could find some stuff,”... „Mohli bysme se po něčem poohlídnout ,“...

This example of specification is the evidence that in the TL we may find several different expressions for one SL word. The verb “find” could be translated as “hledat”, “najít” or in many other ways. For this phrase I picked the word “poohlídnout” as the meaning of the verb is a truthful translation of the original sentence.

Generalization

“Redukce sématnických složek – zobecnění, generalizace, zvýšení stupně abstrakce, substituce hyperonymem, je ve vztahu angličtiny směrem k češtině méně častá. Generalizace postihuje častěji podstatná jména. Nejčastěji abstrahuje český protějšek od specifického typu pojmenovaného objektu, nenili specifičnost příslušného druhu v češtině známa.” (ibid., 53)

We use generalization usually in cases where there is no equivalent in TL and the translator needs to use such expression that will be understandable for the reader.

Golding’s original: My translation: I don’t ask you to be a sport , I’ll say, Nechcu abys hrál podle pravidel , not because you’re strong, but because řeknu, proto, že máš moc je porušit, ale what’s right’s right. proto, že je to prostě správný.

“To be a sport” cannot be translated word by word as the meaning of the word “sport” does not have anything in common with “doing sport”. In this case we should understand it as “to follow the rules” or “to be fair”. “Hrát podle pravidel” is, according to my opinion, the proper translation into the TL.

c) Differences in connotation

Expressive connotations

1) Interjections

Interjections are conventional symbols of human emotions in language. They are lexical units with a strong emotional meaning that is concentrated into these special means of expression. (Knittlová 2000: 63) Interjections may be divided into two main types: primary and secondary interjections.

Interjections are very different in every language and it depends on every single translator (and the TL mode, of course) which expression or phrase will be used.

“Sekundární, odvozená citoslovce si mohou někdy ještě podržovat část svého původního denotačního významu, který je však vždy silně převážen významem konotačním. Jde spíše o slova a slovní spojení s citoslovečnou funkcí. Značnou převahu zde hrají sakrální výrazy ve funkci expresív zvýrazňujících naléhavost celé výpovědi. Základem těchto výrazů jsou slova bůh a Kristus. ” (ibid., 64)

Golding’s original: My translation: “What are they—oh God ! I’m „Co hodlaj—ježiš ! Já mám takovej hungry—” hlad“

Secondary interjections are very frequent in the Czech language, however in my practical part of the thesis there was only one sentence where this feature appeared. The translation was quite easy in this example as this expressions act in the SL the same way as in the TL.

2) Vulgarism

It is always the choice of the translator which and how he/she will use taboo words. The basic rule is that with higher frequency of use of these words, the taboo diminishes. It is very common that some words which were taboo ten years ago are acceptable for readers nowadays.

There was not even one word that could be considered as vulgarism in my practical part of the thesis. Many words were negatively coloured but no one expression headed to taboo.

3) Intensification

“Intenzifikace může být spojena s pocitem libosti nebo nelibosti, jenže intenzifikační prostředky se snadno otírají a oslabují, rychle pozbývají původní význam a sílu, takže je možno spojovat zesilovací adverbia, která znamenají doslovně intenzivní nelibost, s adjektivy, která znamenají něco libého.” (Ibid., 65)

Golding’s original: My translation: He laid his cheek against the chocolate Položil si tvář na čokoládově colored earth, licked his dry lips and zbarvenou půdu, olízl si suché rty a closed his eyes. zavřel oči.

I would not say that the provided instance is the best example of intensification but I wanted to show the possibility of linking up words that do not really seem to collocate. We do not use the expression like “čokoládově zbarvená půda“, but I found it quite appropriate in this context.

d) Differences in pragmatics

Adding of information

The principle of this method lies in addition of some extra information in order to make the text which is not familiar to the reader of TL more comprehensive.

Golding’s original: My translation: By him stood Piggy still holding out the Čuňas stál u něj stále držíce tu křehkou, talisman , the fragile, shining beauty of krásně zářící ulitu, symbol řád. the shell.

My opinion is that “The talisman” is a familiar word for the readers. But as I wanted to make clear what it means, especially in this sentence, I translated it as “symbol řádu”.

In Czech we would understand the word “talisman” like something that we have, for instance, in our pockets for good luck. The Conch is a symbol of power and rule in the novel so I decided to stay clear about this fact.

Omission of information

This method let us omit some specific semantic component. It is in fact some kind of generalization and substitution by more general expression.

In my version I did not translate the whole adjectives that specified the noun “laughter” as it would idly prolong the text. For my purpose, the word “posměch” was sufficient.

Substitution by analogy

This is the most common method used mostly in connection with metric systems and other measurements.

4.1.3.3. Zero equivalence

Zero equivalence means that there is no equivalent that could be used for translation into the TL. Solutions for these translation difficulties are usually replaced by the adoption of the foreign word or its transformation into the Czech language. Acceptance of such expression is most widespread by names and geographical titles.

I left the names without any change. The only name I have translated into Czech was “PiggyČuňas” (it was not his name, rather nickname). We do not know Piggy’s name as he has not had the opportunity to say it, everyone simply calls him Fatty and later Piggy.

4.1.4. ADAPTATION

Vinay and Darbelnet put forward the bestknown definition of adaptation: “Adaptation is a procedure which can be used whenever the context referred to in the original text does not exist in the culture of the target text, thereby necessitating some form of recreation.” (Baker 2005: 6)

Adaptation is a substitution of a situation described in original text with another adequate situation. (Knittlová 2000: 14)

The most typical example of adaptation occurs in translation of proverbs and play on words. Due to the cultural differences we may have difficulties to translate these expressions into the target language. The answer to this question is quite simple. The translator has to look for sufficient equivalent in TL. The aim of the translator would not be to follow the exact SL but to make the text comprehensive for the reader of the TL.

4.1.5. AMPLIFICATION

“Amplification is use of bare expressions, likely to be ignored or misunderstood by a hearer or reader because of the bluntness. Emphasis through restatement with additional details.“ (9)

Amplification involves repeating a word or an expression while adding more detail to it, in order to emphasise what might otherwise be passed over. In other words, amplification allows us to call attention to, emphasise, and expand a word or idea to make sure the reader realizes its importance.

I did not use this procedure in my thesis, so I can not provide any example from the practical part of my work.

4.1.6. EXPLICITATION

Explicitation is a method of making more explicit in the target text some information that is implicit in the source text. Vinay and Darbelnet define these techniques as:

“the process of introducing information into the target language which is present only implicitly in the source language, but which can be derived from the context or situation” (Baker 2005: 20)

Explicitation is mostly used with strange names or expressions which are not very familiar to the reader and the translator should adapt the translation properly.

Golding’s original: My translation: He wormed his way through the thicket Zavrtával se do houštiny a mířil toward the forest, keeping as far as k pralesu, co nejvíce u země, aby se possible beneath the smoke. dostal z dosahu kouře.

I had to be more explicit in part of the sentence above, as the reader might not understand properly, what the author meant by “keeping...beneath the smoke”. Even if this instance is not really expression which would be incomprehensible from the language point of view, the stylistic arrangement, I think, was inevitable.

4.1.7. PRETERMISSION

Pretermission means that we omit, leave out or pass over some information from the source language during the translation into the target language. The translator may have several reasons to omit some part of the information in translation. One of these occasions may be the creation of more economical style or deleting some non meaningful elements.

This is an example where I decided to leave out a word “cap” as in the TL we are not used to, or even forced to repeat subject in every sentence. We simply omit it as the reader is able to understand the meaning and may easily imagine the subject from the context without difficulties. The subject must be always present in English sentence while it is not required in every Czech sentence.

4.1.8. COMPENSATION

“Compensation is a translation procedure whereby the translator solves the problem of aspects of the source text that cannot take the same form in the target language by replacing these aspects with other elements or forms in the source text.“ (9)

Compensation is one of the forms of substitution, which is a replacement of one language form by another, equivalent form. Routledge Encyclopedy says that:

“Compensation is a technique which involves making up for the loss of a source text effect by recreating a similar effect in the target text through means that are specific to the target language or text. (...) Most writers on the subject note that compensation requires careful, strategic application. Given that the transfer of meanings from one language to another continually involves some degree of loss, the translator must decide if and when compensation is warranted.”

(Baker 2005: 3738)

4.2. Direct speech

My aim was to approach the Czech colloquial speech which is used nowadays and come closer to the readers of the 21 st century. I translate the direct speech in way to make a readable comprehensible text which would be natural. I endeavour to avoid any dialectical expression which would not be understood for the majority of the readers.

4.2.1. Piggy

Piggy is a more than interesting character in the novel. He appears on the first page of the book and accompanies us through the whole story till the end. As I have already mentioned, he is very fat boy, suffering from asthma and wearing spectacles. All of these aspects set him aside from the others, though he is one of the most reasonable characters. He is clumsy, slow, and scared of everything. These dissimilarities make him quite unpopular and the only boy who considers him a friend is Ralph, but even Ralph makes fun of him. Golding used a lot of abbreviations, contractions and other features of colloquial speech for Piggy’s direct speech but did not slip into slang. I tried to follow this pattern and respect the original model of Piggy’s speech and did not include any uncommon or slang expressions.

4.2.2. Ralph

Ralph is the chief and leader. He is the one who is usually uttering the commands and ideas. His speech is informal but comprehensive. It does not contain so much colloquial aspects like Piggy’s. The only feature I found was the contracted forms. Even though there are not any grammatical mistakes in the English version, I let Ralph and also other characters make grammatical mistakes in the Czech version. These mistakes are subordinate to the stylistic approach.

4.3. Comparison

First of all I would like to introduce the only translator of Lord of the Flies and later in this chapter I will deal with the translation differences between Heda Kovályová’s translation and my work. I would like to present several differences that I have found. I must emphasise that the first and only translation of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is more than forty years old, though the translation is very precise and considering the dictionary possibilities of that time, it points the translator’s knowledge of the SL and also the TL. Despite this, I found some inadequacies which I would like to compare to my suggestions.

4.3.1. HEDA KOVÁLYOVÁ *15.9.1919 Prague

Heda Margoliová – Kovályová spent her childhood and juvenility in Prague. She married Rudolf Margoli in 1938 but she did not manage to leave for her honeymoon. In October 1941 she was transported into ghetto in Lodž. Later she was moved to Osvětim and other concentration camps from where she managed to escape. She lost her whole family except her husband during the Second World War.

Rudolf Margoli became Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade shortly after the war. Later he was indicted as a traitor, saboteur and spy, and in 1952 he was executed as a member of alleged “Rudolf Slánský’s confederate centre”. After some time Heda Margoliová married again, this time a philosopher Pavel Kovály. She started to work as a translator after the marriage. After August occupation in 1968 she left for the USA where she worked in the International Department of Harvard University Law Library. She returned home after the revolution in

The above given examples indicate the disunity of the usage of metric system. I have chosen to convert all the Imperial measurement expressions into the metric system, while Heda Kovályová used both of the measurements. I feel that the translator should use only one system which would be comprehensible for the reader of the target text. In this case I am not sure whether it would be easy to understand or imagine “forty feet”.

I wanted to emphasise the difference between colloquial and informal style in Ralph’s direct speech. In the first example appears a quite formal expression “cožpak” which I would not consider as a good choice for direct speech of a twelve year old boy. It sounds unnatural and in my opinion it is not the right solution. Also the usage of the word “bychom” or “byste” should be, I think, more compact or unified.

4.3.4. DIFFERENCES IN INTERPRETATION

Heda Kovályová has decided to translate this sentence about Jack so that he is easily identifiable by his behaviour and red hair. The mood of the sentence expresses that Ralph recognised Jack without difficulties. My translation results from the context. Ralph mentioned several times that the savages are painted and some of them are almost indefinable. That is the reason why my translation differs. I claim that Jack was identifiable “only” by personality and red hair. I see Jack as a boy painted all over and the only things that identify him are behaviour and the colour of his hair.

I think that the translation difference of this sentence lies in the free translation used by Heda Kovályová. Probably she wanted to stress Jack’s arrogance and slyness, and she transformed the meaning of the verb “inspire” into Czech “být na výši”. My decision was to use closer translation to the original. I think that it fits better in the context.

Highlighted words in this example are not very precisely translated which may, and does, change the meaning of the sentence slightly. If we would imagine such a situation in our mind, we persuade that it is quite odd. First highlighted word “a cutter” could be translated as “loď” but it does not really collocate with the situation. As the background of the novel is a war, I am sure that there was a huge sea ship in a distance and a cutter was a smaller boat that came to the island with three sailors. According to this judging we should translate “a cutter” as “loďka or “člun”. It would be a more accurate expression.

Another word which is translated wrongly and changes the whole image of the situation is “a rating”. Heda Kovályová misinterpreted this expression as “podpěra”. According to The Free Dictionary by Farlex a rating is: “1. A position assigned on a scale; a standing, 2. a) A classification according to specialty or proficiency, as of a member of the armed forces. b)

Chiefly British An enlisted person in the navy. (...)”. (12) For my purpose the expression “námořník” was a good choice and also the whole sentence become much more meaningful. The last word “a submachine gun” does not change the meaning of the sentence but again it is not translated precisely. We may find several different equivalents for this expression in Czech: “automat, samopal, automatická puška”. Definition by The Free Dictionary is: “A lightweight automatic gun that shoots pistol ammunition, is usually fired from the shoulder or hip, and often has the capacity for shooting single rounds.” (12)

I chose the word “kulomet”, as this expression is the most popular in connection with guns used by the Navy, and the Czech reader may easily imagine the right weapon. Heda

Kovályová’s expression “protiponorkové dělo” is incorrect. Such a gun does not even exist and we do not use these two words together. For antisubmarine weapons we may use translations like “protiponorkové torpédo” but definitely not “dělo” as this type of gun operates in a very different way.

In this example we must choose the right translation by considering the whole context of the situation. The skull was leveled with his face, so we may suppose that he probably hit it with his fist rather than with his foot. Logical resolution is that he was not licking his ankles but knuckles – the joints of fingers. Heda Kovályová’s translation “kotníky” is wrong nowadays because we use this expression for ankle – the joint which connects the foot and leg.

I am not able to find out why “Indians” are transformed into “černoši” in the Czech language. My opinion is that the author used this comparison wittingly. The Indians were always described as people who are painted and are very similar to wild men or savages. This is the reason why Piggy used this word in his direct speech. As the translation of “černoch” into English is “black man” or “coloured man” we may say that she wanted to stress the dark colour of the boys on the island and compare them to “paintedcoloured men”. Another speculation could be the position of black men in 1958 when was she translating the book.

4.3.5. MY TRANSLATION SUGGESTIONS

The cry of the hunters in the original version was very short and in rhyme. Heda Kovályová translated the last sentence longer but she kept the rhyme concept. I tried to follow both of the features and keep the utterances short and in rhyme.

I decided to translate this expression into more comprehensive words. When I was reading the translated version, I did not understand exactly what the “antifonální řeč” is. My aim was to translate this word so that the reader will not have to look for the explanation and will understand immediately.

Although an expression equal to Czech “slza” exists, William Golding used more poetic language to express a drop of water or let’s say a tear. Heda Kovályová chose also very poetic

I stayed by the simple noun which is not so poetic, but expresses in one word the same meaning. I find the expression “krůpěj” quite oldfashioned for readers in the 21 st century.

In my opinion the word “shledával” is very oldfashioned and I would not use it to express that Piggy was searching or looking for words in his mind. The verb “shledávat” could be also misconceived because we tend to use this expression for description of “state”.

Here I would like to point out only one word which appears to me as some tongue twister. “Nesčíslných” is really difficult not only to say but also to read. My solution is also quite demanding but more frequent in Czech, I feel.

I find it redundant to translate “twins” as “obě dvojčata” because it is obvious that twins are two persons. The word “obě” is completely superfluous information. Another unnecessary extension of the whole sentence comes in the second part of the utterance, where Heda Kovályová used side formula instead of two word expression of the same meaning.

In this example we are witnessing addition of information. I think that Heda Kovályová wanted to stress the fact, that Ralph mentioned several times in the novel that “it could be only a game”. The word “zapikolovat” is connected with very well known game in Czech. I consider it excessive and it only leads to the prolongation of the target text.

The table above deals with some examples of translation differences between Heda Kovályová’s translation and my work. Some of the words from the old translation seem to me obsolete and out of date. Others, like “stříbřitý smích” or “perleťový vzduch”, I consider inappropriate as we do not use them in such collocations very often.

5. CONCLUSION

As I already mentioned in introduction, translation is not an easy process. I have always thought that I have a good wordstock in Czech language. But as I started to translate, I realized that a good translator must practice and read a lot. I have to say that through translation and work on my final thesis I have learned many new expressions and vocabularies not only in the English language but also in my mother tongue.

The practical part of my final thesis enriched my view of both languages. Now I am able to see how difficult it can be to translate a single word correctly. It can take a few seconds or a few hours, even days. The best way was to let it be and wait a few days for the right solution to come up. Sometimes it was difficult to transfer the English expression into the Czech language without the shift of the meaning, so I had to find out how to paraphrase it. But on the other hand paraphrasing is a very frequent feature in English language and I could substitute the whole English phrase by one Czech word. I think that this is one of the main proofs that Czech language is very florid and translators have a wide range of possibilities.

I have to stress that I really enjoyed the practical part of my thesis and I am glad I have chosen this theme for my final work.

The theoretical part was not so creative however it was also very beneficial. I acquainted myself with the main theories of translation and analysis. Some features which I consider obvious, without thinking about it, are much clearer to me now. I am convinced that I will be able to use them correctly in the future. I have learned that for the correct translation, the right analysis is very helpful.

To sum up my thesis I would like to point out that translation requires a wide range of not only English, but also Czech vocabularies and their right usage in text. The feeling about the languages is another important feature that every translator should develop. The last point which I found as the most important is the understanding of the translated text by the reader. There lies the true evaluation of the translator’s work.

6. RESUME

This diploma thesis deals with the translation and analysis of the semifinal and part of the final chapter of the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. It is divided into two main parts. The first one is practical and it contains the translation itself. In the second, theoretical part, I focus on the methods I used for translation, present my own solutions and compare them to the only Czech translation made by Heda Kovályová in 1958.
