Guess what? We have just celebrated our 18th anniversary. Those who try things we recommend are rewarded. We have stayed in business for one reason and that is we have never attempted to appeal to the lowest common denominator as mainstream outlets do. At the same time we recognise that people do have different tastes and to some CMT is actually good. We also appeal to those people and offer many mainstream items in our bargain bin. But the legends and true country music are our bread butter and will always be. If you see something you think you may like but are worried let us know. If you pass our inquisition we may be able to send it on a sale or return basis. I say inquisition because if your favourite artists are SheDaisy and Rascal Flatts we certainly aren’t going to risk something as precious as Justin Trevino. By the same token we believe great music is timeless and knows no bounds. People may think chuck steak is good until they try the best rump! Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Dale Watson. Before hand I had the added pleasure of sitting in with my compatriot Eddie White (a.k.a. “The Cosmic Cowboy”) for an interview at the 2RRR Studios. Dale is a humble, engaging and extremely likeable man with a passion for tradition.

  • Murphey, Michael Martin[Entry from Slatta, the Cowboy Encyclopedia
1 Murphey, Michael Martin [entry from Slatta, The Cowboy Encyclopedia, 1990, 1994) Singer, songwriter, promoter of cowboy culture. With his highly successful 1990 album, "Cowboy Songs," Michael Martin Murphey became the country's leading evangelist for western music. It is, he says, the "music of my people, of my land." Murphey has won millions of converts who agree with his choice. "This is not the hot new country. This is the great old western." Murphey grew up hearing and singing cowboy songs around campfires at Sky Ranch, near Lewisville, Texas. He left Texas to attend UCLA in the late sixties. "I went out there to study Greek and Latin and Roman history and medieval history. I was interested in the classical world, the ancient world, and the medieval world. And I'll tell you my reasoning for that. I feel like I was the wandering minstrel of today, and I really wanted to study the wandering minstrel of the ancient times, and so, I got into all that because I was interested in actually digging up more stuff on the early, early singer-songwriters and minstrels. And I had a great time doing that." At UCLA Murphey set his studies to song with a folk-rock group called the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Murphey's love for and knowledge of history continues. He often gives audiences intriguing glimpses into the musical and social history behind his songs. In 1971 Murphey returned to Texas, just in time for the great outlaw music rebellion. Like Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Waylon Jennings, Murphey shunned Nashville's constraints and conservatism in favor of the West's wide-open spaces.

I'd been rooting around the History Department where, at age forty-one and only twenty years behind schedule, I'd finished my undergraduate degree. I had the academic bug and I wanted to move on to graduate school. Professor David Montejano was kind enough to let me sit in on one of his graduate courses to allow me to get a feel for what graduate work involved. As the seminar wound down, he suggested that I check out the AMS program on the third floor of Garrison Hall. I looked through the courses the department had been offering over the last few semesters and after noticing subjects like film history, jazz, a large collection of topics in popular culture, and seminars dealing with drugs, alcohol, and the beat generation, I knew I'd found a new home.

Hyniea (Niea) Gardner A Thesis in the Field of Anthropology and Archaeology for the Degree of Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Harvard University May 2019 © May 2019 Hyniea (Niea) Gardner Abstract In 2016 the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) reported that the Korean music industry saw an overseas revenue of ₩5.3 trillion ($4.7 billion) in concert tickets, streaming music, compact discs (CDs), and related services and merchandise such as fan meetings and purchases of music artist apparel and accessories (Kim 2017 and Erudite Risk Business Intelligence 2017). Korean popular music (K-Pop) is a billion-dollar industry. Known for its energetic beats, synchronized choreography, and a sound that can be an amalgamation of electronica, blues, hip-hop, rock, and R&B all mixed together to create something that fans argue is “uniquely K-Pop.” However, further examination reveals that producers and songwriters – both Korean and the American and European specialists contracted by agencies – tend to base the foundation of the K-Pop sound in hip-hop and R&B, which has strong ties to African-American musical traditions.

2015 ARSC CONFERENCE SESSION ABSTRACTS THURSDAY, MAY 28 PLENARY SESSION Thursday, 8:45 am – 9:45 am JAZZ IN PITTSBURGH Marty Ashby, Executive Producer, MCG Jazz Pittsburgh has played a significant role in the development of jazz. Between 1900 and 1960, countless musicians, composers, arrangers and jazz industry professionals were born in Pittsburgh who went on to become some of the most important and influential jazz icons of the 20th Century. Legends such as Billy Strayhorn, Ahmad Jamal, Art Blakey, Billy Eckstine, Stanley Turrentine, Roy Eldridge, Billy May, George Benson, Ray Brown, and Joe Negri all heralded from the Pittsburgh region. MCG Jazz is producing a feature length PBS documentary film that focuses on the Pittsburgh jazz legacy. This session will discuss some of the material uncovered during the production of the film. How the cultural diversity of the region coupled with robust philanthropic support for the Arts – and a unique entrepreneurial spirit – have provided the opportunity for jazz to flourish. Additionally, for the past 28 years, MCG Jazz has been capturing audio from virtually all of the concerts performed in its Jazz Concert Hall in multiple formats beginning with analog 8-track to today’s 96kHz/24-bit Pro Tools sessions. The contents and methodology of archiving the recordings, photos and videos will also be highlighted.
