The 17-pounder was a 3-inch gun mounted on a modified 25-pounder carriage, and proved to be a resounding success. It had the calibre and the muzzle velocity to deliver a penetrating shell at a range far greater than any other similar Allied weapon. Originally a towed weapon, it was soon put into self-propelled, armoured mountings as the Sherman Firefly - at last the Allies had a weapon that was reliable against the Tiger.

The AK-47, for example, is actually no more lethal than most other small arms in its class, but popular notoriety and Hollywood representations tend to credit it with superior power and lethality. Similarly, the bayonet actually killed relatively few men in World War I, but the sheer thought of an enraged foe bearing down on you with more than 30cm of sharpened steel was the stuff of nightmares to both sides. In some cases, however, fear has been perfectly justified. During both world wars, for example, artillery caused between 59 and 80 per cent of all casualties (depending on your source), and hence took a justifiable top slot in surveys of most feared tools of violence. The subjects of this book – the MG 34 and MG 42, plus derivatives – are interesting case studies within the scale of soldiers’ fears. Regarding the latter weapon, a US wartime information movie once declared that the gun’s ‘bark was worse than its bite’, no doubt a well-intentioned comment intended to reduce mounting concern among US troops about the firepower of this astonishing gun.

Corporation concerning quality and performance aspects of the M9 g-mm handgun being provided to U.S. forces under contract with the Army. The specific questions and our responses are included in appendix I. As discussed in our report dated September 15, 1988, to the Chairman, House Committee on Government Operations, Procurement: Quality and Safety Problems With the Beretta M9 Handgun (GAO/NSIAD-@J-213), the M9 quality and performance problems relate primarily to frame cracks and slide failures. The contractor has implemented actions that appear to have resolved the frame crack problem. With regard to the slide failure problem, the Army and the contractor are addressing this issue and expect to have it resolved by January 1989. As agreed with your office, we did not obtain official Department of Defense comments on this report. However, we did meet with officials responsible for the matters discussed in the report, and we have incor- porated their comments where appropriate. Our review was performed during September and October 1988 in accordance with generally accepted government auditing standards.
