The main landscapes and phytophysiognomies, according to flood origin, are briefly described and some of the characteristic plant species are mentioned: (a) river flood (1–5 m) on clayey eutrophic soils with gallery forests, pioneer forests and scrub, Tabebuia and Copernicia parks, seasonal swamps, grasslands and oxbow lakes; and (b) rain flood (10–80 cm) mainly on dystrophic sandy soils (72% of the total area) with savanna (‘‘cerrado’’) grasslands and woodlands, with or without ponds. Regulating factors of the vegetation such as wet-and-dry cycle and management are considered. Dynamics of the vegetation, in particular the aquatic types, are shortly depicted. The role of grazing for conservation is discussed, and we suggest that 200 years of cattle ranching apparently did not cause major changes in the vegetation, except turning tall grass into short swards, as the domestic herd found a nearly empty niche. However, severe threats to the flora and fauna of the Pantanal originate outside the floodplain. Com isto o presente trabalho teve como objetivo determinar as variabilidades anual, mensal e decendial, quantificar o número de dias secos e chuvosos e definir diferentes níveis de probabilidade de ocorrência de chuvas no município de Juína - MT. Utilizou-se os dados pluviométricos disponibilizados pela Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA), do período compreendido em 1980 a 2011, desconsiderando os anos de 1982, 1990 e 1991 devido a falhas durante a coleta de dados, totalizando um histórico de 28 anos. Utilizou-se o programa computacional Microsoft Excel© 2010 para a tabulação dos dados realizou-se médias e desvio padrão anuais, mensais, decendiais e analisou-se a ocorrência de dias secos e chuvosos. -

Epidemiological Update Yellow Fever 9 March 2017 Situation summary in the Americas Since epidemiological week (EW) 1 to EW 8 of 2017, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and the Plurinational State of Bolivia, have reported suspected and confirmed yellow fever cases. The following is a situation summary in Brazil. In Brazil, since the beginning of the outbreak in December 2016 to EW 9 of 2017, there were 1,500 cases of yellow fever reported (371 confirmed, 163 discarded, and 966 suspected cases remain under investigation), including 241 deaths (127 confirmed, 8 discarded, and 106 under investigation). The case fatality rate (CFR) is 34% among confirmed cases and 11% among suspected cases. According to the probable site of infection, 79% of the suspected and confirmed cases were reported in the state of Minas Gerais (1,057), followed by Espírito Santo (226), São Paulo (15), Bahia (7), Tocantins (6), Goías (1) and Rio Grande do Norte (1).1 The confirmed cases are distributed in three states: Minas Gerais (288), Espírito Santo (79), and São Paulo (4). Figure 1 illustrates the municipalities with confirmed cases and cases under investigation, as well as confirmed epizootics, and epizootics under investigation. In the state of Minas Gerais, the downward trend in suspected and confirmed cases continues to decline for the fourth consecutive week. Meanwhile, in the state of Espírito Santo cases have increased from EW 1 to EW 4 of 2017 and it will be necessary to continue to observe the evolution of the epidemic (Figure 2). With regard to the number of new cases (confirmed and under investigation) reported between 6 February and 6 March, there were 137 new cases in Espírito Santo and in Minas Gerais during the same period there were 239 new cases reported. -

The diverse mosaics of habitats resulting from the varied soil types and inundation regimes are responsible for an extraordinarily rich terres- trial and aquatic biota, exemplified by the bird richest wetland in the world—463 birds have been recorded there—and the largest known populations of several threatened mammals, such as Pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus), marsh deer ( Blastocerus dichotomus), giant otter ( Pteronura brasiliensis), and jaguar ( Panthera onca). Until recently, deforestation of the adjoining Brazilian central plateau was considered the major threat to this area, but now deforestation is a critical problem within the floodplain itself. More than 40% of the forest and savanna habitats have been altered for cattle ranching through the introduction of exotic grasses. And there are other threats that lead to large-scale disruption of ecological processes, severely affecting biodi- versity. -
