INTRODUCTION TO THE ORIGINAL VERSION 1 What Grove printed under ‘Gay and Lesbian Music’ was not entirely what we intended, from the title on. Since we were allotted only two 2500 words and wrote almost five times as much, we inevitably expected cuts. These came not as we feared in the more theoretical sections, but in certain other tar- geted areas: names, popular music, and the role of women. Though some living musicians were allowed in, all those thought to be uncomfortable about their sexual orientation’s being known were excised, beginning with Boulez.

  • "Rip Her to Shreds": Women's Musk According to a Butch-Femme Aesthetic
"Rip Her to Shreds": Women's Musk According to a Butch-Femme Aesthetic Judith A, Peraino "Rip Her to Shreds" is the tide of a song recorded in 1977 by the rock group Blondie; a song in which the female singer cat tily criticizes another woman. It begins with the female "speak er" addressing other members of her clique by calling attention to a woman who obviously stands outside the group. The lis tener likewise becomes a member of the clique, forced to par ticipate tacitly in the act of criticism. Every stanza of merciless defamation is articulated by a group of voices who shout a cho rus of agreement, enticing the listener to join the fray. (spoken! Hey, psf pst, here she comes !lOW. Ah, you know her, would YOIl look ollhlll hair, Yah, YOIl know her, check out Ihose shoes, A version of this paper was read at the conference "Feminist Theory and Music: Toward a Common Language," Minneapolis, MN, June 1991. If) 20 Peraino Rip Her to Shreds She looked like she stepped out in the middle of somebody's cruise. She looks like the Su nday comics, She thinks she's Brenda Starr, Her nose·job is real atomic, All she needs is an old knife scar. CHORUS: (group) 00, she's so dull, (solo) come on rip her to shreds, (group) She's so dull, (solo) come on rip her to shreds.! In contrast to the backstabbing female which the Blondie song presents, so-called "women's music" emphasizes solidarity and affection between women, and reserves its critical barbs for men and patriarchal society.

By Ariana Bowe Thesis Advisers: Professor Justin Patch May 2020 Bowe 2 Project Statement In my project, I will explore the New York City venue CBGB as one of the catalysts behind the rise of punk subculture in the 1970s. In a broader sense, I argue that punk is defined by a specific local space that facilitated a network of people (the subculture’s community), the concepts of DIY and bricolage, and zines. Within New York City, the locality of the punk subculture, ideas and materials were communicated via a DIY micro-medium called zines.

Rob Freeman (center) recording Ramones at Plaza Sound Studios 1976 THIRTY YEARS AGO Ramones collided with a piece of 2” magnetic tape like a downhill semi with no brakes slamming into a brick wall. While many memories of recording the Ramones’ first album remain vivid, others, undoubtedly, have dulled or even faded away. This might be due in part to the passing of years, but, moreover, I attribute it to the fact that the entire experience flew through my life at the breakneck speed of one of the band’s rapid-fire songs following a heady “One, two, three, four!” Most album recording projects of the day averaged four to six weeks to complete; Ramones, with its purported budget of only $6000, zoomed by in just over a week— start to finish, mixed and remixed. Much has been documented about the Ramones since their first album rocked the New York punk scene. A Google search of the Internet yields untold numbers of web pages filled with a myriad of Ramones facts and an equal number of fictions. (No, Ramones was not recorded on the Radio City Music Hall stage as is so widely reported…read on.) But my perspective on recording Ramones is unique, and I hope to provide some insight of a different nature. I paint my recollections in broad strokes with the following… It was snowy and cold as usual in early February 1976. The trek up to Plaza Sound Studios followed its usual path: an escape into the warm refuge of Radio City Music Hall through the stage door entrance, a slow creep up the private elevator to the sixth floor, a trudge up another flight
