The War of the Roses starts between the House of Lancaster and the House of York, 1445 ending with a final Lancaster victory in 1487 and Henry VII defeating Richard III to become King of England.

York’s Vice Chancellor, Lord James of Rusholme, suggests a boat race, which 1965 students adapted into a three-day event, featuring: rowing, table tennis, hockey and a tug of war.

1974 The year of the only ever draw in the entirety of Roses history.

1977 Lancaster win their fifth Roses in six years, which is the strongest period of dominance in the competition’s history (so far...).

1996 York’s darkest hour as the White Rose is defeated 170.5 to 60.5 in Lancaster.

2009 York win three consecutive Roses tournaments (2007, 2008, 2009), the last occa- sion either York or Lancaster successfully retained the James Carter Trophy.

2015 Former England manager, Roy Hodgson, officially opens the tournament with then FA Chairman and Nouse alumnus Greg Dyke.

2016 Esports is included in the tournament for the first time following a four-year campaign by students, with Lancaster defeating York.

2018 54 contests are included, making Roses the biggest Varsity competition in Europe.
