THE GREAT DEBATERS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER THE URBAN DEBATE LEAGUE "Be Great! Be a Great Debater!"

THE NATIONAL REVIEW FEATURES URBAN DEBATE! "My own conclusion is simple. Debate is the best kind of cha rity, worthy of all support, whether from presidents or regular dads. Fund it, watch it, judge it, give your kids to it: debate is America's forgotten sport." - Ms. Amity Shlaes, The National Review (7/2/14)

Last week we celebrated New York City Middle School Debate with the Wall Street Journal profiling the growth of middle school debate in New York City thanks to urban debate league coaches bringing middle school debate to NYC!

This week we celebrate New York City High School Debate with the National Review's article last week celebrating the impact of urban debate leagues on high school students. In the article,"How to Bring Your Zombie Child to Life: High School Debate Deserves More Than a Chance." Ms. Amity Shlaes states, "My own conclusion is simple. Debate is the best kind of charity, worthy of all support, whether from presidents or regular dads. Fund it, watch it, judge it, give your kids to it: debate is America's forgotten sport." She reaches this conclusion in a review of our urban debate league data: http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs126/1103318109276/archive/1117973679954.html 1/7 9/20/2017 archive.constantcontact.com/fs126/1103318109276/archive/1117973679954.html

"Fifty percent of high schoolers in urban schools graduate. Ninety percent of urban high-school debaters graduate. When it comes to that subset of debaters deemed "high risk," those kids who, for example, might have scored poorly on eighth-grade assessment tests, the data are even more dramatic. Seventy-two percent of high-risk secondary-school debaters graduate, versus just 43 percent of nondebaters. There's more: Debaters score better on ACT tests, and get into better colleges. And, remarkably, pupils do not need to debate forever to see results - even one or two debate experiences improve performance. But longer is better; for every semester a student debates, his grades go up. In college, debate also benefits students. This outcome differs from others sports at the high-school and college level. In the of much-loved college football, team participation actually lowers the grades of the players..."

For the next two weeks over 100 elementary school, middle school, high school, college students, alumni and teachers will participate in our Manhattan Debate Institute at Hunter College. And over the course of 7 weeks hundreds of students will participate in our Harlem Debate Institute, Bronx Debate Institute, Brooklyn Debate Institute, Queens Debate Institute, and Teachers Debate Institute.... and that's just summer vacation! During the school year we host debate tournaments every single weekend from September to June!

So shout outs this week to Ms. Shlaes and the National Review for profiling the world's most rigorous academic program! Click here for the full article! And shout outs to all the supporters for our mission that EVERY school should have a debate team and EVERY student should have access to the best debate education opportunities.

After concluding the Harlem Debate Institute and Brooklyn Debate Institute, next week the Manhattan Debate Institute begins! The Manhattan Debate Institute is our longest and largest debate camp of the summer with multiple tracks and sessions from 9:00am - 4:00pm. We thank all our supporters, parents, students, volunteers, interns and staff for making everything possible.

The Advanced High School Debate Track The Manhattan Debate Institute offers , public forum debate, and international public policy forum debate for advanced high school students and advanced middle school debaters. The New York City Urban Debaters are among the most successful varsity debaters in the country - winning numerous local, state, regional and national tournaments including three teams that qualified to the Tournament of Champions last year - the nation's most competitive and selective debate tournament.

The Novice High School Debate Track In this track students will learn both policy debate and public forum debate which are two of the most popular high school debate styles in the nation. Students will have daily computer lab access to research and build their cases for tournaments that start in September. Our goal is that students are ready for the first tournament in September and also have the skills to start debate teams at their schools if they do not have one. Nearly every weekend there are high school debate tournament opportunities. Our high school debaters compete at regional and national tournaments including Harvard, Yale, and Georgetown University.

The Middle School Debate Track The New York City Urban Debate League runs the largest middle school debate league in the nation and one of the few debate leagues that features all debate events including public forum debate, policy debate and parliamentary debate. Each speech and debate event has its own unique skills and academic benefits and so students will learn each event over the course of two weeks and at the end of debate camp compete in the Manhattan Summer Debate Tournament!

The Elementary School Debate Track The New York City Urban Debate League founded one of the first elementary school debate leagues in the country and offers a one week summer debate camp for students in elementary school. This camp focuses on public speaking, note taking, argumentation skills, questioning skills and lots of fun, fun practice debates! Our elementary school debaters have monthly tournament opportunities including at the New York Historical Society and Sesame Street this coming school year!

The Girls Debate Institute Track The New York City Urban Debate League partners with the Bella Azubg Leadership Institute each summer to run an all Girls Debate Summer Program for two weeks from 1:00pm-4:00pm each day. Debate Topics include violence against women nationally and internationally, the Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby decision, Title IX, women in business, same sex marriage and many other issues. In the morning students participate in workshops on leadership skills, writing, and public speaking. Two years ago we founded the first girls debate league in the country with all girls debate tournaments and workshops during the school year to close the gender gap.
