Volunteer Opportunity: Primary Schools- Sight Loss Awareness Project Volunteer
At Southampton Sight we support people living with Sight Loss to reach their full potential by providing a range of activities, information, advice and guidance and resources which help to build confidence, reduce isolation and help people make informed decisions about their future.
Southampton Sight also work to raise awareness about Sight Loss. This work is crucial in a society where many people know very little about sight loss.
Every Thursday during term time our Volunteers visit Primary Schools across Southampton to deliver engaging, fun and interactive Sight Loss Awareness Sessions to Year 2 Pupils. Led by a very experienced Primary School Teacher our volunteers work with small groups of children carrying out interactive activities and tasks. Our aim is to provide the children an insight of what it is like to live with Sight Loss. Activities provoke curiosity and questions from the children.
Key to our Sight Loss Awareness programs is the involvement of Visually Impaired Volunteers as they can offer a real insight into living with Sight Loss.

Creative Options is seeking people with enthusiasm, warmth and empathy to come and work alongside our members in our member-led, peer support group on a weekly basis. We are looking for team players who have empathy and understanding and can encourage and mentor people to get the best out of their attendance. We need people who have an understanding and empathy with people with mental and emotional difficulties who can come alongside people who may be finding life a challenge at times, who need encouragement and support. We particularly encourage people with personal lived experience to join us as volunteers as a way of gaining their own recovery. Often, this may be the first step back to the world of work.
Activity assistant Creative Options is looking for enthusiastic team players to join the project in a voluntary capacity in the following ways:- Supporting the main drop-in on a Wednesday 10.30 – 2.30 p.m. – generally helping by helping to set up the drop-in, organising activities and equipment and helping to put things away at the end of the day. One of the specific roles is to help organise a weekly quiz with prizes and co-ordinate this activity together with other volunteers.
Specific helpers are required in the following ways:-
Hospitality Co-ordinator Someone with knowledge of and experience of food preparation and handling, who can encourage and help the members to organise a hospitality team to work every week in assisting in purchasing milk on the way in to drop-in then setting up the tea and coffee station, plan and shop for the lunch and prepare it together with the members each week. This may include preparation of a simple soup in the winter and the occasional cooked meal. Food hygiene level 2 certificate will be required, but this can be provided. The aim would be for the person to lead the members in helping to do the catering rather than waiting on them.
Art and craft assistant A volunteer who has particular art and craft skills that they may be willing to share i.e. ability in papercrafts is very helpful as this is a popular activity. Also, someone who can do a range of arts and crafts activities would be an enormous advantage.
Sewing assistant 2 hours 12.30 – 2.30 p.m. on a Wednesday (fortnightly) Someone who can be a general activity assistant, as above, but has particular skills in sewing and can assist our tutor in helping to lead the sewing group. This will include the ability to do hand and machine sewing and to do repairs. We are looking for someone to be able support and teach our members in this skill. There is a regular fortnightly sewing club where the person would be expected to work alongside the main tutor. 69
Knitting and crochet assistant 2 hours 12.30 – 2.30 p.m. on a Wednesday (fortnightly) Someone who can be a general activity assistant, as above, but has particular skills in sewing and can assist our tutor in helping to lead the sewing group. This will include the ability to do hand and machine sewing and to do repairs. We are looking for someone to be able support and teach our members in this skill. There is a regular fortnightly sewing club where the person would be expected to work alongside the main tutor.
Men’s group support worker 10.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. on a Friday We are looking for a male support worker to support our peer-led men’s group on a Friday at Central Baptist Church and to encourage the men to plan and engage with a range of social activities i.e. discussion, table games pool etc.also to help them organise social trips together outside of the venue and further afield. There is also another group at the church on a Friday who are the friends of Morris House, a former day-centre which closed and they attend the drop-in organised by the NHS for which a lunch club is organised. Most of the men who attend the men’s group stay for lunch and so the role would be to encourage the men to stay and socialise over lunch together. In the afternoon there is a fortnightly cookery class and an art club which some of the men may stay on for. It is not a requirement of the support worker to stay on, but they may do so if they wish to. We need someone with the ability to get alongside the men, befriend, encourage, mentor and support them. An understanding of mental and emotional issues is an advantage. Creative Options actively encourages people with their own lived experience to come along and work as a volunteer as a step in their own recovery.
For all these voluntary posts a DBS clearance will be required which will be organised (and paid for) by the project. Appropriate training and support will be given to all individuals. www.creative-options.weebly.com

Do you need help getting online? Or maybe you know someone who needs extra support to get online?
With many services moving online including housing benefits, college and apprenticeship applications and even online shopping, it can be very daunting for people who don’t know how to use computers and IT systems.
Southampton City Council have put together an interactive IT map which shows information about a wide range of IT facilities, training and free Wi-Fi that is available in Southampton to help support people to get online.
The map is designed to be used by advisers, family and friends or a user themselves to find the most appropriate IT training/facilities to suit them.
If you are aware of any other free training or online help we can add to the list, please contact [email protected]
