www.sports.wingate.edu 1 2008-09 WINGATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Wingate University head women's basketball coach Barbara Nelson and her Bulldogs could not have writ- ten a more beautiful script for Nelson's first season at the Wingate helm…even if they hired a Hollywood script writer.

The Bulldogs advanced to the 2007-08 NCAA Division II Elite Eight as champions of the South Atlantic Region. Wingate completed the 2007-08 season as the 10th-ranked team in the country, according to the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Wingate also won the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament on the way to the Elite Eight.

The Bulldogs open the 2008-09 campaign with high hopes. Wingate will host the Queen City Classic Saturday and Sunday in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs will play Queens University of Charlotte Saturday at 4 p.m. and Belmont Abbey College Sunday at 4 p.m. Johnson C. Smith University will face Belmont Abbey Saturday at 2 p.m. and Queens Sunday at 2 p.m. to round out the four-game Classic.

Guards Kasey Gillis and Kate Edwards were the only seniors on the 2007-08 team. The Bulldogs made NCAA appearances in each of the last four seasons. The duo's departure means almost 24 points per game leaves with them.

Ten of 14 letter-winners will return for the 2008-09 campaign as the Bulldogs look to make another post-sea- son run. "We will need to find scorers (to replace Kasey and Kate)," Nelson says. "We must also improve our rebounding as well."

Wingate's 77.8 points per game last season put the Bulldogs second on the SAC scoring charts. On the boards, Wingate was eighth in the league in rebounding margin. The Bulldogs won the battle of the boards only eight times during the 2007-08 season.

Bulldog senior guard Anna Atkinson leads Wingate's returning players. She was named the SAC Player of the Year and SAC Scholar Athlete. She was the MVP of both the SAC tournament and South Atlantic Region tournament. Atkinson finished in the top five in the nation in assists (8.3), -to-turnover ratio (3.2) and steals (3.7), while also leading the team in scoring (14.8).

The 2007-08 NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award winner, Atkinson was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® first team selection last year. In addition, she earned third team Daktronics All-American laurels on the court. Atkinson was the SAC Athlete of the Year and the SAC Presidents' Award winner.

Freshmen Stephanie Whitenack and Gladney Brown will spell Atkinson at the point guard position. Whitenack gives the Bulldogs a viable three-point threat, Anna Atkinson while Brown gives Wingate a powerful and strong presence in the backcourt. At the position, senior Brittany West and sophomores CC Brooks and Emily Parrish will battle for time. Whitenack will also be in the mix at the two guard spot. West was third on the team in three- pointers last season (21), while Brooks hit six-of-eight from long distance during her first Bulldog season.

At the three position, Brown and freshman classmate Kurie Washington will give the Bulldogs an interesting dynamic. Washington is a McDowell High School product, the alma mater of senior teammate Anna Atkinson. "Kurie and Gladney will make us so athletic at the three spot," Nelson says. "They will give us a big and powerful presence on defense as well.”

2 www.sports.wingate.edu 2008-09 WINGATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Senior Paige Mincey will also make a valuable contribution at the three position. "Paige has worked very hard on her shot in her off-season drills," Nelson says. "She is hitting the three-pointer with much confi- dence."

Wingate is deep at the post positions, as five regulars return for the 2008-09 season. Sophomore forward Stefani Shuey averaged 10.6 points per game in the post-season last year. Classmate Jessy Keitt is one of the top defenders in the league. Junior center Erica Crumlin led the SAC with 2.65 blocks per game in 2007-08. Crumlin will miss the 2008-09 campaign for personal reasons.

Junior center Stacie Rhodes started 16 games last year; she finished second on the team (to Crumlin) in blocked shots. Senior Leslie Tucker and junior Sarah Rosser can mix it up inside and step outside to hit the three-pointer. Tucker played only eight games last season due to injury. Freshman forward Erin Fitzpatrick provides the Bulldogs with a solid rebounder in the paint.

Nelson believes the team's number one goal is simple. "We always want to be the best we can be every day," she says. "Every coach makes big goals, but we want to focus on the little things instead."

"Our short term goals haven't changed," Nelson acknowledges. "We want to show up every day with a positive attitude. If we take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves."

Wingate's 2007-08 schedule was one of the toughest in the region. The 2008- Stacie Rhodes 09 slate is no different, as Wingate prepares for the tough SAC schedule. The Bulldogs will face Peach Belt Conference members Clayton State, Augusta State, USC Aiken, Armstrong Atlantic State, Columbus State, Georgia College and State and UNC Pembroke. CSU and ASU both made the NCAA tournament in 2008.

The road contest with the Clayton State Lakers (Nov. 25) will be a re-match of last year's NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional championship game. With the new NCAA regionalization model, Wingate (and the South Atlantic Conference) will compete with the Peach Belt and the Conference Carolinas in the Southeast Region.

With their membership in the new region, the Bulldogs will also face Conference Carolinas members Queens, Belmont Abbey and Anderson (S.C.) this year. The Anderson Trojans advanced to the NCAA play- offs in 2008.

"I have always said…to be the best, you have to beat the best," Nelson says. "Our schedule helped us obtain the number one seed in the region last year. We lost a few games to the top teams in the region, but the schedule gave us a leg up for seeding."

Wingate (26-8 overall in 2007-08) was perfect at Cuddy Arena last season, posting a 12-0 home record. Wingate's home scoring margin was plus 16.75 points per game. The Bulldogs started the season with a 9-6 record. They responded by winning 17 of their next 18 games to advance to the Elite Eight, where they lost to the eventual national champion Northern Kentucky University.

The Bulldogs will play 18 South Atlantic Conference games in December, January, February and March. The 2008 Food Lion SAC tournament will be held March 4 (sites of higher seeds) and March 7-8 (Hickory).

Barbara Nelson's first season as head coach for the Wingate University women's basketball is one for the history books. The Bulldogs advanced to the 2007-08 NCAA Division II Elite Eight as champions of the South Atlantic Region. Wingate (26-8 overall) completed the 2007-08 season as the 10th-ranked team in the country, according to the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll. Wingate also won the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament on the way to the Elite Eight.

Prior to joining the Wingate family, Nelson was the head varsity girls' basketball coach at Providence Day School in Charlotte. She compiled a 437-176 record with seven NCISAA state championships in 21 seasons with the Chargers. PDS was named the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 champions five times. In addition, Providence Day won the CISAA bas- ketball conference crown nine times under Nelson's watch.

In 2006-07, Nelson led the Chargers to a 30-4 overall record, a state title and a conference championship. The Charlotte Observer named Nelson its girls' basketball Coach of the Year for her efforts that season, the fourth time she has received this prestigious honor. Nelson has compiled a winning record in 19 of her 21 seasons with the Chargers. The 30 wins in 2006-07 were a career-best for Nelson.

Barbara Nelson has deep ties to the South Atlantic Conference. She is a graduate of Presbyterian College with a B.S. degree in Psychology. A four-year letter winner in basketball for the Blue Hose, Nelson served two years on the Scotsman Club board for her alma mater. She coached three players who signed SAC scholarships.

The accolades her Providence Day players have received could fill several scrapbooks. Konecka Drakeford was a two-time Parade All-American (1991 and 1993). Drakeford was the NCAA Division II Player of the Year her senior season at Johnson C. Smith University.

Both Drakeford and Natasha Brackett were named the Gatorade N.C. Player of the Year and N.C. Miss Basketball in 1993 and 2001, respectively. Brackett (Auburn) is one of four former Chargers to sign NCAA Division I scholarships. Drakeford (Israel and Turkey) and Brackett (Israel) have played professionally as well. Jill Ingram, a Georgia Tech graduate is playing profes- sionally in Sweden.

Nelson's involvement in the game of basketball extends beyond the Providence Day campus. A 12-year participant in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), Nelson was a high school All-American selection committee member in 2006-07. She has been a Nike Basketball Camp Director from 1999 to the present. This year Nelson is a voter for the caoches poll.

She coached AAU basketball (boys and girls) from 1986 until 2007. Nelson was an assistant coach for an AAU 18 and under state and national championship team in 1986. She has coached the Charlotte Royals (boys), Charlotte Monarchs, Carolina Comets and N.C. Flight. Nelson spent two years as a floor coach for the WNBA Charlotte Sting during open and free-agent try- outs.

A much-in-demand clinician, speaker and student of the game, Nelson has worked and attended camps and clinics at Charlotte, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, Lipscomb, Gardner-Webb and Wingate. The NCAA Division II community is recognizing her knowledge, as the WBCA appointed her to the USA TODAY ESPN Board of Coaches to vote on the weekly top 25 coaches’ poll this season. Nelson and her husband Vernon have two children: Quinn (19) and Haley (16).
