Plans for a trail ride are underway for near the Mangapiko Stream, thanks to the hard work of the Lower Mangapiko Streamcare Group. Group secretary Betsy Bryant says the group has been busy clearing, planting and fencing on each side of the 21km stream. There is now fewer than 4km of work left until the steam is completely finished. The group has been running for more than 10 years and approximately $300,000 has been spent on the stream in the last three years. The work has been funded by The Waikato River Authority, Fonterra Grassroots Fund and Waikato Regional Council. Mrs Bryant says a trail ride will be the TC081216SPMANGAPIKO “icing on the cake”. MANGAPIKO Streamcare Group discuss plans for a trail ride near the stream. The group was responsible for forming the trail behind Te Awamutu College which is well used by both cyclists and walkers. Don and Dinah Macky, who farm on the lower Mangapiko Stream, say they are very supportive of the trail and are more than happy to see it going through their property. “The sooner the better,” Mr Macky says. He says the community will greatly benefit from the trail. “The money spent on the stream will be more appreciated by the community if there is a trail.” JUMP INTO Te Awamutu Alive tree switched on for Christmas
