Q&A: Meet KVOO's Dena Fletcher Honor Roll

August 26 2019, Issue 668 Q&A: Meet KVOO’s Dena Fletcher Newly minted KVOO/Tulsa PD Dena Fletcher (CAT 7/12) spent more than a dozen years at crosstown Cox Classic Rock KSJR before making the move to Country. Her trip across the street reunites her with Griffin/Tulsa Dir./Radio Operations & Programming Steve Hunter, who gave Fletcher her first PD gig in 2007. She spoke with Country Aircheck about her radio roots, her programming philosophy and what most appeals to her about Country radio. CA: When were you first bitten by the radio bug? DF: During junior college in Odessa, Texas, I was focused on journalism, but a friend Dena Fletcher suggested a give radio a try for fun. College radio was so much fun that by my second semester, I was the student PD – probably because no one else wanted the job. It was actual work and didn’t pay, but I loved it. Shortly thereafter, I started Indy Go: Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean (c) in Indianapolis with working at a local Rock station and it was off to the races. (l-r) WFMS’ Boomer Layfield, Albright & O’Malley & Brenner’s Do you recall your earliest memories of interacting Dan VanLandingham, the label’s Dawn Ferris, WLHK’s Cara with radio as a medium and a listener? Denis, WFMS’ Adam Kashner and WLHK’s Krystal Keithley, Kyle Knezevich and Jackie Robinson. Like most radio people, I was hanging out in my room listening to the radio as a kid. I lived in a fairly remote part of West Texas, so that was my connection to the rest of the world.

If 2020 was the summer where everyone stayed home, 2021 will be the one where people can’t wait to get back out. With Memorial Day Weekend approaching, what are country radio’s programmers seeing as the singles for this season? “I think three are shaping up to be summer soundtracks with Luke Bryan’s ‘Waves’ front and center,” says Audacy Country Format Captain Tim Roberts. “It’s a super-chill track that captures summer and fun beautifully.” Also on Roberts’ summer fun list: Brian Kelley’s “Beach Cowboy,” “which I think is where a lot of brains drift toward daydreaming about summer beach fun,” and Old Dominion’s new “I Was on a Boat That Day.” (Continued on page 4) COUNTRY INSIDER TOP 5: WGAR’s “Wazz & Carletta” Look Back On Morning Show Pairing Ahead Of First Anniversary. Excerpts from the ONE Thing: the Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results by Gary Keller with Jay Papasan

Excerpts from The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results By Gary Keller with Jay Papasan INTRODUCTION 1 – Going Small “What’s the ONE Thing you can do such that by doing it everything else would be easier or unnecessary?” • When you want the absolute best chance to succeed at anything you want, your approach should always be the same. Go small. • “Going small” is ignoring all the things you could do and doing what you should do. • It’s recognizing that not all things matter equally and finding the things that matter most. • It’s realizing that extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you can make your focus. 2 – The Domino Effect “If you chase two rabbits you will not catch either one.” Russian Proverb • Highly successful people know they must line up their priorities. They find the lead domino and whack away at it until it falls. • Extraordinary success is sequential, not simultaneous. Success builds on success. • The key to success is built over time. It is built sequentially. It’s one thing at a time. PART 1 – THE LIES – They Mislead and Derail Us 3 – The Trouble with “Truthiness” “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” Mark Twain • Buying into The One Thing sometimes becomes difficult because we’ve unfortunately bought into too many other – and more often than not those “other things” muddle our thinking, misguide our actions, and sidetrack our success. Life is too short to chase unicorns.
