The girls’ cross country team has done it again! They won their 5th consecutive state title, a first in the history of women’s cross country in Ohio. Re- turning from last year’s state championship team were senior Julia Mendiola; juniors Shea O’Brien and Cynthia Haas; and sophomore Rachel Iacofano. Newcomers to the top varsity seven were junior Gracie Davis, sophomore Regina Neugebauer, and freshman Mia Brady. The Irish ladies faced their greatest competition to date, placing 2nd to Woodridge at Regionals. O’Brien commented, ”After we lost to Woodridge at Regionals, we regrouped and refocused. We trained hard the week before State to get hungry for the win. We pulled through and got the result that we wanted.” The girls conquered the field early and never looked back. They were winning at the first, second, and final mile. Every year the top 16 runners in the competition stand on the podium and earn individual All-Ohio status. The top two Irish runners receiving this honor were Iacofano, placing 7th, and Mendiola, placing 10th. Not only did these girls succeed athletically, but also academically. All girls on the team achieved Academic All-Ohio status, except Brady, who, as a freshman, is not eligible for this award.
