MONUMENTAL INSCRIPrIONS IN THE CHURCH AND CHURCHYARD 1521 - 1982 Transcribed by members of the North West Essex Churchyard Group 1978 - 1984 Edited, indexed and typed by Neville G. Price, H.A. 1984 Copies to: The Essex Record Office The Essex Society for Family History The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Saffron Halden Saffron Walden Town Library The Society of Genealogists I N T R 0 D U C T I 0 N In the 7th century there was in all probability a Saxon wooden church here. The massive Norman stone church that was known to exist in 1130 was rebuilt and enlarged in the early form of the Decorated period between 1250 and 1258. A general rebuilding, in the Perpendicular style, was begun in about 1450. The spire, however, is more modern, for it was built, and the upper part of the tower was renewed, in 1832. In the past fifteen years extensive repairs have been carried out to the clerestoi--y, nave roof, tower and spire. In the churchyard the oldest tomb is dated 1667 (no. 140) and continue to 1881 (no. 183), with an additional one of 1982 (no. 229). On the floor of the church there are two chest toLJ.bs, dated 1521 (no. C6) and 1544 (no. C14). Of the lecls"er stones, the oldest is 1672 (no. C48) and the latest 1844 (no. G26). On the walls of the church monuments and recoi~ls run fron 1568 (no. C98< to 1952 (no. C140), but there is a brass of 1430 (no. C87). The list of Vicars goes back to c. 1200. Parish Profile St Peter & St. Paul, Great Bowden Part of Market Harborough Resourcing Church Team Contents About the Diocese 1 The Vision 2 About the Parish 3 About the Church 4 About the Team 6 About You 8 About the Buildings 11 A welcome to the Diocese Thank you for your interest in this role. Please be assured that there are many people praying for this process of discernment, and we trust that you will know God’s guidance as you explore this role. The Diocese of Leicester, like every diocese in the Church of England, is in transition. Our vision is the kingdom of God and we seek to enable growth in the depth of discipleship, growth in numbers of disciples, and growth in loving service of our communities. However, the way in which we do this work is rapidly changing as we prioritise: • New communities (fresh expressions of church and church planting) • Intercultural communities (greater representation of BAME people) • Intergenerational communities (schools, churches and households) • Eco-communities (eco-diocese status and net zero emissions by 2030) • Reconciling communities (‘living well together’ in church and society across our many divides) These changes require not only considerable flexibility and adaptability from clergy and lay ministers but also great resilience. This is why we also place a strong emphasis on wellbeing – seeing this as a partnership where you take responsibility for your own wellbeing, while knowing that there is always support available from bishops and diocesan staff. Additional support is also offered by our partner organisations such as Launde Abbey (retreat centre), St Philip’s (interfaith centre), Community of the Tree of Life (residential and dispersed community for young adults) and of course the Cathedral.

Photographs ©Gordon Ridgewell. Howlett End: an evocative name for the location of a burying ground in the flat Essex countryside in the parish of Wimbish. On the left-hand side of the Saffron Walden to Thaxted road there is a public footpath sign, by a house called 'Old Star House'. Follow this path for two or three hundred yards along field hedges, and find a small enclosure seemingly cut from the corner of a field, surrounded by several trees, the remains of a quickset hedge, and reached by a wooden bridge over a ditch. This is the Dissenters’ burial ground. Today it is well-maintained, planted with bulbs, and contains two memorial stones, as well as a seat donated by descendants in 2002.

MARY'S, SAFFRON WALDEN A history and guide by Dr. Kenneth Dixon compiled and edited by Hamisn VIalker original iliustrations by Peter Naylor All profits on the sale of this book will be given to the 2000 Restoration Appeal Fund. ~ How lovely is thy dwelling place oLord ofHosts! My soul longs, yea, faints, For the courts of the Lord; My heart and flesh sing for joy To the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home And the swallow a nest for herself Where she may iay her young; At thy altars, 0 Lord of hosts, My King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in thy house, Ever singing thy praise! It is a great privilege to be able to serve and worship God in such wonderful surroundings. For centuries St. Mary's Church has stood overlooking the town of Saffron Walden, witnessing to God's presence and, through the magnificence of its structure, giving glory to His holy name. As well as being a witness and a place of worship, St. Mary's serves the community in many other ways. It is open every day for prayer and quiet for all those who need it, it is used for civic occasions and concerts, and it also attracts thousands of visitors to The Monogram of our town. Throughout its history, church members and the the Blessed Virgin people of the town have endeavoured to care for the building to ensure that its beauty and glory will be enjoyed by future The letters of the name 'Maria' are evident in this ancient symbol.

  • Viking Man Lost Weighty Gold Ring in Essex 1,000 Years Ago, Say Archaeologists Curator Carolyn Wingfield on the Almost Pure Gold Ring Lost by a Viking Man in Essex
Viking man lost weighty gold ring in Essex 1,000 years ago, say archaeologists Curator Carolyn Wingfield on the almost pure gold ring lost by a Viking man in Essex "The size and weight of the ring suggest that it was most likely worn by a man. It weighs over 32 grams and we know from X-ray fluorescence analysis at the British Museum that the metal is over 95% gold, the rest being silver and copper. That’s fairly common for gold of this date, to be a good standard. Vikings were very concerned with the purity of the metal. On silver coins you sometimes find little nicks made with a knife blade where they were testing that they’d got decent quality silver. Fig 1: This weighty gold ring, dating from between the 10th and 12th centuries, was lost by a Viking in the Essex town of Thaxted© Saffron Walden Museum It’s got a little bit of damage - probably hit by a plough or something in the thousand years that it’s been buried - but it’s our policy to preserve the ring as found and not try to restore it to ‘as new’ condition. The ring was made by twisting two strands of gold wire and then twisting these with two tapering gold rods to form a hoop. The thin ends of the rods and wires were joined at the back of the hoop by beating them together into a flat, diamond-shaped plate. The plate is decorated with tiny punched circles. Fig 2: A metal detectorist reported the ring after finding it in 2013© Saffron Walden Museum This is a fairly widely-known style that goes throughout the Viking period.
