CRACKERJACK KING, JAKKALBERRY ARRIVE The Marco Botti-trained Group 1-winning half- brothers Crackerjack King (Shamardal) and Jakkalberry (Storming Home)--slated to contest Saturday=s Arlington International Festival--arrived safely at Arlington Park Sunday. The duo remained in quarantine at the end of training hours Monday morning. Jakkalberry, owned by Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock, will contest the GI American St. Leger, while Crackerjack King (ATB owns a 50% share), will contest the GI Arlington Million. The pair had their final gallops in Newmarket Saturday. ACrackerjack King and Jakkalberry are both in good order and I am confident that they will cope well with the journey to America,@ trainer Marco Botti said Saturday. The pair is expected to head straight into quarantine on their return to the U.K. before a tilt at Melbourne=s Spring Carnival. AAlthough I currently have no confirmed jockey, Ryan Moore is a possibility,@ said Botti. AWe shall assess the well being of both horses on their return to the U.K. and if everything is in order we will take them to Australia.@ Working in advance of a possible start in the Million, Vertiformer (Dynaformer), who is also pre-entered for the American St. Leger, breezed five furlongs in 1:06.80 Monday over Arlington=s turf course, which was listed as Agood@ with the Adogs@ off the rail. Jeffrey Sanchez was aboard for the move. Also taken out for a spin was Cherokee Lord (Sir Cherokee), who negotiated six panels in 1:16.80 with Francisco Torres in the irons.

RACETRACK ROUND-UP

Hopefuls Ready for ‘Mid-Summer Derby’ Several hopefuls for the Aug. 25 GI Travers S. at Saratoga tuned up Monday morning, including Stealcase (Lawyer Ron). Campaigned by John Oxley, the chestnut--accompanied by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan--breezed six furlongs in 1:12.53 over Saratoga=s main track. AWe were looking for a big work, and he delivered that,@ said Norman Casse, son and assistant of trainer Mark Casse. AHe went out three quarters in 1:12 and seven eighths in 1:25. You really Travers hopeful Atigun can't work better any better Horsephotos than that, so it seems like we're on track for the Travers at this point.@ Stealcase, who won going a mile at Churchill Downs May 31, was third--beaten 8 1/4 lengths-- by Paynter in the GI Haskell Invitational July 29 at Monmouth. AWe've had several good horses this year, including one [Prospective] who actually made the Derby," said Casse. AStealcase has always been our favorite 3-year-old from the very beginning. It just seems like he's his own worst enemy, and he hasn't really put everything together. Even in the Haskell, had he broke better [hit the gate at the start], he probably would have finished second. I don't think we would have beaten Paynter that day, but we were going to be a lot closer. He's always been knocking on the door; we're just waiting for him to put it all together one time.@ Stealcase was fourth in his sole start at the Spa in his career debut in July of 2011. AHe's always liked this racetrack," said Casse. AHe's only had one start over it, and it was his first start as a 2-year-old. He broke badly and the race was compromised from the beginning. He's spent the last two summers up here and has never not worked well, so we know he likes the surface." Also working Monday morning ahead of a tilt at the Travers was Five Sixteen (Invasor {Arg}), runner-up in the restricted Curlin S. at the Spa July 27 and GI Belmont S. third Atigun (Istan), who was sixth most recently in the July 28 GII Jim Dandy S. The former covered five furlongs in 1:00.35 over the main track, while the latter went four panels in :48.55 over the Oklahoma training track.

These two crops had been sired at fees of A$55,000, but those early successes sent his fee soaring to A$110,000 for 2008 and 2009. It has since been cut back to A$66,000 in the harder times of 2010, 2011 and 2012. Although Exceed And Excel sired five Southern Hemisphere group winners in those first two crops, his third and fourth crops--also sired at A$55,000--have proved less fruitful at group level. They have produced only one group winner between them, but that one group winner was the triple Group 1 winner Helmet, who was on display at Darley=s recent stallion show at Dalham Hall Stud. Exceed And Excel=s higher-priced crops, therefore, have a bit of work to do. The 2-year-olds from the first of them raced during the recently completed 2011/12 Australian season and--with three stakes winners among them--they did well enough to earn Exceed and Excel sixth place among Australia=s 2-year-old sires. A fourth juvenile enjoyed stakes success in New Zealand. Even so, there is no getting away from the fact that-- against the odds--Exceed And Excel is making a much deeper impact in the Northern Hemisphere. I say Aagainst the odds@ because Australian breeders had seen him win seven of his 11 Australian starts, including a record-breaking Group 1 victory over seven furlongs and another Group 1 win in the six-furlong Newmarket H. However, his venture to Europe didn=t pay off after Sheikh Mohammed purchased him for a reported ,8 million. Because of a virus Exceed and Excel missed the Royal Ascot sprints that have provided such rich pickings for Australasian-bred sprinters. He probably wasn=t at his best in the G1 July Cup, when he faded to the rear after setting out to make the running.

However, there is plenty of quality in Excelebration=s pedigree, as his fifth dam is Ela Marita.
