Richard Mapes Commandant Wisconsin Veterans Home at King

irst, I want to thank all members, their families and employees for their overwhelmingly warm Fwelcome. Your commitment and caring spirit for the KING “kingdom” is nothing less than contagious. The rich history that echoes throughout the campus begins with the 130 years of caring for our military heroes. All branches of the armed forces are represented here.

I grew up in the shadows of the Marine Corps where my dad’s 25 years of service included WWII and Korea. However, I was destined to join the Navy as a fresh recruit which bridged three decades of service in the naval reserves and retirement from the Medical Service Corps Office as a commanding officer in the 4th Marine Battalion in support of the 24th Division Medical Reserve Unit.

More recently, I was proud to be part of our National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29, where I had the special privilege to meet and salute our KING Vietnam vets. This also included a visit to the VFW Post 305 in Eau Claire where Governor Walker, Maj. General Dunbar and Secretary Zimmerman recognized service and sacrifice of our Vietnam veterans, the fallen, the wounded, those unaccounted for, former POWs, their families and all who served. From 1955 until 1975, more than 9 million men and women wore the uniform.

In the words of General Patton; “The soldier is the army. No army is better than its soldiers. The soldier is also a citizen. In fact, the highest obligation and privilege of citizenship is that of bearing arms for one’s country”.

What a great March in Stordock Hall. Members enjoyed special entertainment by Tom Schumacher and his guitar. Following Tom’s entertainment, members were given the luck of the Irish! A leprechaun appeared in the premises of Stordock Hall one afternoon and lost his gold which was hidden throughout the building. Members were encouraged to retrieve it for a special prize awarded to the winners by the activities staff, who somehow were magically transformed into leprechauns themselves to pass out prizes. The luck of the Irish was really on Michael Henningsen’s side when he received the largest amount of chocolate for finding the lost gold. Stordock Hall also had its annual Vietnam Veterans Day event where Vietnam Veterans were greeted with a warm welcome, snacks and drinks, and music videos from the Vietnam era. Steve House brought in his Vietnam memorabilia to display for the Veterans.
