    Chapter 5 CONSTRAINTS AGAINST DEVELOPMENT OF THE EAST SAN RAMON VALLEY AREA Peter Negulescu Introduction All recent projections have shown that the population of the San Francisco Bay ARea is increasing at a brisk pace; as a result, many non-residential urban and rural areas are being considered by county and city officials and outside investors as potential sites for future development. City, county, and regional planners are faced with the problems of providing places for adequate urban growth while preserving open space and agricultural lands. The Tassajara region, which is located east of the cities of San Ramon and Danville (Map 1) is a likely target for urban expansion, since it could offer many advantages to its inhabitants as well as generous profits for the developers. According to the San Ramon Valley Area General Plan (SRVAGP), this part of Contra Costa County is considered one of the most desirable places to live in the Bay Area, "because of its scenic beauty, good climate, the suburban charm of its neighborhoods, and prox imity to the major employment centers of San Francisco and Oakland" (SRVGPCC, 1977). The population of the valley has increased from about 2,000 in 1940 to about 41,000 in 1975. Dall worked as an analyst for the Clorox Corporation in Oakland until his retirement. For the last 11 years he was an active member of the Board of Directors of the San Ramon Historic Foundation that raises funds in support of Travis Boone’s Forest Home Farm. Since all good things come to an end he retired from that board and we are very happy to welcome him to our Board of Directors. We also thank Judy for her great service on our board. Known today as the Iron Horse Trail, it was initially the route of the Southern Pacific San Ramon Lambert Wille’s interesting story about his Branch Line Railroad. At our May meeting, Jim Townsend related the history of this fascinating piece of real grandfather’s travels from Denmark to the estate that threads through the communities of the Valley. MAIN IDEA: To use the information provided to learn that: • In 1848, the war between Mexico and the United States ended and, in 1850, California became a state. • In 1848, the Gold Rush brought people to California and many passed through the valley. • Pioneers purchased land from Rancho families or squatted on valley land and started small villages. This was the discovery of gold. This discovery brought people from all over the world to California with hopes of becoming rich. This event was called the Gold Rush. One month later the Mexican American War ended and a treaty was signed. As a result of this war, the United States gained control over all of California. Many of the Americans who settled in the San Ramon Valley came to California originally because of the Gold Rush but stayed when they saw how fertile the land was in our valley. Fertile land has the nutrients and water needed to produce food. They also saw how few people lived here. The families of the northern Rancho San Ramon did not have their homes on the rancho, preferring to live closer to large towns.
