Furries: the Importance of Animals in Alice in Wonderland Furries: The Importance of Animals in Alice In Wonderland By: Sachen Pillay Why Focus on Animals? • The stylistic usage of animals is central to the original story and our production • Carroll used animals as a vehicle of self expression and self empowerment • How? • Carroll gave animals human characteristics • This aspect greatly contributed to the child like wonder and absurdity of our story • Has this trend continued into the modern day? The Furry Community: An Overview • Furries: A subculture focusing on assigning anthropomorphic animal characters human characteristics • Many in this subculture also embody these characters into “fursonas” • Fursona: An “alter ego” with a distinct personality • Is a mechanism for some to feel comfortable with their own skin • A judgement-free way for self-celebration and self-acceptance • Fursuit=socialization therapy • The Fandom is built upon celebrating childhood fasciation with animals • Is a subculture of science fiction and fantasy pop culture History of Furrydom • Furry Fandom forms in the late 1970s • Originally coalesced out of communities of artists who sold commission work at sci-fi conventions- they were fans of Disney animation • These animators would meet up and share their art-work of anthropomorphic animals- the first Furry conventions • First Organized conventions led by Mark Merlino and Rod O’Riley • The Fursona develops in the late 1980s and early 1990s • Furry community blossoms into celebrating fantastical imagery • Becomes a safe space for self-expression- often life changing • Fandom goes global with the internet • It taps into a collective phenomenon Misconceptions • The Fandom is a weird sex club • Sexuality has always been a thread- but not focused on sex • Fandom is focused on the human condition. Sex not a taboo subject- very sex positive • Media focused on this aspect and distorted it • The Fursona is a fetish • Not True: It represents how people see themselves or what they wish to be • Is often the better version of the Furry because innocence and purity is associated with animals • The Fandom is Toxic • The fandom is a safe space for one to explore/celebrate themselves • Schism occurs in 2000: • faction rebels against the sexual aspects of fandom to make it more appealing • This was highjacked by homophobes-vocal minority • The fandom is a haven for queer sci-fi fans • Merlino and O’Riley are married • 80% of the fandom are LGBTQ+ • The search for self acceptance and self celebration is integral for the queer community • The fandom is a safe space to explore Furries, sexuality and identity • Fursonas are utilized as a mechanism for that Animals, and self exploration • Many joined the community to escape bullying: 61% of furries reported to have been bullied as the Queer children for their identities Experience • Demographics • High percentage of fandom are non-binary and transgender • Transgender and Non-binary- 12.5% • Why does this matter? • All the threads connect back to our story! • Carroll utilized anthropomorphic animals for the same reasons that furries do today- it’s a phenomenon that has carried over many generations • The LBTGQ+ aspect directly correlates with the Non-binary world of the production Production’s • The production wishes to pay homage to the Furry community Usage of • As actors: Think about how the fascination with animals influences the purpose of you own character Animal • How can you honor the meaning furry community? • What mechanisms for self-acceptance and Iconography self-celebration exists in your roles? • Can you apply your own experiences? • How can you relate to the meaning you find to this presentation? My name is Boiler (or Boilerroo), but you can call me Mike if you want to! I've been in the furry fandom since 1997 (24 years in total!) – time flies when you're having fun! I am a non-binary transmasc person and I use he/hIm pronouns. If you don't know what that means, you are free to ask me and I will explain – but in sum: I am trans! I am also an artist, part time media arts instructor and a full-time librarian in my outside-of-furry life. I am very excited to usher in the next years of DenFur – I know the pandemic has really been an unprecedented time in our lives and affected us all deeply, but I am hoping with the start of DenFur we can reunite as a community once more, safely and with a whole lot of furry fun! They is all told about in that fanzine, which is mostly a true zine, with some stretchers, as I said before. – 4 Feb Those of you who may expect an effort from me in any way proportionate to Broken Toys will be sorely disappointed. I have no plans for tricky logos at the top of the first page, illustrations or any layout that I can’t do on the spot, using only Word Doc. It is my view that it’s enough that I write and produce one reasonably elaborate and generally under-appreciated fanzine every month. Am I superhuman? Maybe I am – but I’m not crazy. Using observations, surveys, and interviews at two fur conventions, I explore how individuals’ various identities are developed through costuming. The results reveal a spectrum of identities within the fandom; costuming and “dressing-up” enable individuals to safely explore, express, and negotiate these identities through as-animal performance. Introduction: Fur conventions attract individuals who identify with animal personalities. Ascribing human attributes to nonhuman creatures, furries create and assume anthropomorphic identities.

    “There’s A Little Bit of That Magic Where I’m Becoming Something Else”: LGBT+ Furry Identity Formation and Belonging Online Mary Heinz Goucher College, [email protected] ABSTRACT Active and open identification with animals and the creation of anthropomorphic (or zoomorphic) fursonas have become infamous on the internet, yet published research on the subculture is lacking. This ethnographic study explores this under-examined subculture by considering how individuals who identify as LGBT+ and as furry find and experience community online in ways that contribute to feelings of belonging, inclusion, and overall well-being. Through a series of semi-structured interviews, it was found that participating LGBT+ furries experienced an increase in self-reported emotional well-being when allowed to engage with online furry fandom. Given that furry identity is inherently non-normative, the fandom becomes an accepting space for other non-normative identities, like LGBT+ identities. By creating accepting online communities, those without access to supportive communities in their off-line lives can learn about and explore non-normative identity without judgement. These spaces may allow for the accumulation of multiple non-normative identities, all of which are in relative harmony within online furry fandom, which serves as a “catch-all” identity. Existing within this space had positive affects on the well-being of the participants.
