Without fail, we return from the Festival energized by the films and inspired by the expert advice from filmmakers. So I started thinking about ways to recreate that energy in the class- room, eventually arriving at the concept for this DVD. This DVD is a chance to hear from emerging and seasoned filmmakers as they discuss technical, legal, ethical and busi- ness issues of documentary film. It was created to be watched in brief topical sections, although it can also be watched straight through. We’ve organized the subjects as they might be encoun- tered in creating a film, from finding good stories to getting your film out there. This booklet also contains short discussion ques- tions to be used in class or by aspiring filmmakers to think more about the ideas and insights offered by our interviewees. -
Air India 182 Hotdocs Press Release
AIR INDIA DOCUMENTARY PREMIERES HOTDOCS 2008 (Toronto, March 18) Air India 182, Sturla Gunnarsson’s provocative film about the 1985 Air India tragedy, will have its world premiere at HotDocs 2008, singled out as the 2008 Festival´s Canadian Opening Presentation. A deeply affecting look at the world’s deadliest air- terror attack before 9/11, Air India 182 will screen on Thursday, April 17 at 9:30 pm at Toronto´s Winter Garden Theatre. Air India 182 written and directed by Sturla Gunnarsson and produced by David York and Sturla Gunnarsson. The duo last teamed up for the International Emmy Award- winning post apartheid love story, Gerrie and Louise. Judy Koonar is associate producer. Air India 182 is a first-person account of the Air India conspiracy and its tragic aftermath. The story is told by those who were directly involved, including families of those who died, key CSIS and RCMP investigators and the conspirators themselves. Their testimony is intervoven with reconstructions of key moments in the conspiracy, based entirely on court documents, de-classified CSIS reports and wiretaps. The film counts down the final weeks and hours before Air India 182 disappeared off Irish radar screens . “This was a Canadian tragedy”, says Gunnarsson. “The conspiracy was Vancouver- based, most of the victims were Canadian and it has profound implications about the way we think of ourselves and the society we live in. I hope this film goes some way toward distilling a very complex story and giving a voice to the Air India families, who are among the most gracious and dignified people I’ve met.” Air India 182 is produced by 52 Media Inc. -

All the water that we need to drink, to raise our crops, there‟s only one single source, which is the monsoon. So the monsoon not only brings water. It brings life to India, which means that it‟s its soul. Monsoon is the soul of India.” Dr. Ranjan Kelkhar, Director General Indian Meteorological Department (retired) “The monsoon is one of the greatest shows on earth, with its terrible grandeur that can go quickly from blessing to curse. Everyone should submit to the experience at least once. If that is not possible, the next best option is to see Sturla Gunnarsson‟s MONSOON.” Rohinton Mistry Author, Such A Long Journey, A Fine Balance MONSOON Synopsis Part road movie, part spectacle, part human drama, Monsoon is a documentary exploration of chaos, creation and faith in the land of believers. The subject is monsoon, the incomparably vast seasonal weather system that permeates and unifies the immense and varied culture of India, shaping the conditions of existence for its billion-plus inhabitants. Filmed across the Indian sub-continent and charting the huge system‟s path as it surges toward and gradually engulfs every region of the country, Monsoon introduces us to a remarkable array of individuals whose lives are in different ways entwined with the phenomenon.
