www.guardianonline.co.nz Saturday, May 23, 2020 Ashburton Guardian 5 River track assault enquiries ongoing

By Jaime Pitt-MacKay [email protected] Police are urging anyone with information to come for- ward after a teenage girl was assaulted during the day on a popular walking and biking track in Ashburton. The assault took place close to the Ashburton River Track, near the Ashburton Dog Park located off William Street, on the afternoon of May 18. Detective senior sergeant Richard Quested said po- lice are making enquiries into the incident, and at this stage are limited as to what information they can share. The incident was reported to police on Wednesday, and the Guardian understands a scene guard was put in place overnight Wednesday and that a scene exami- nation was carried out on Thursday morning. “Our enquiries to date have not established a fur- ther risk to the public, however, we acknowledge inci- dents like this may cause concern in the community and we advise that anyone who sees anything suspi- cious or feels unsafe should call police immediately on 111,” Quested said. “Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police on 105 and request detective sergeant Colin Welsh, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.” The area where the assault took place will forever be linked with the murder of Ashburton teen Kirsty Bent- ley in the late 1990s, being an area she frequented when walking her dog, which was what she was said to be do- ing at the time of her disappearance. The area is where Kirsty’s dog and underwear was found by searchers the day after she disappeared.

■■NETBALL Trio owning umpiring challenges

By Adam Burns [email protected] A trio of up and coming netball officials from Ashburton say umpiring has benefited them as players. High school pupils Gianna Butler, Ashlein Lyttle and Olivia Pearce last week continued their development as netball adjudica- tors when they passed the Netball New Zealand (NNZ) Zone Theory exam. It is the final assessment before they are put to the test in a prac- tical setting.
