BINGLEY GRAMMAR SCHOOL BelongGrowSucceed Newsletter May 2019 A Word from the Headteacher

Our Year 11, 12 and 13 students are in the midst of exam season and continue to work extremely hard to achieve their goals. The conduct of our students has been exemplary in the exam hall and they are to be congratulated for this. We would like to thank all our students for their determination and mature attitudes during this stressful time and also our parent/carers for their ongoing support. I would like to wish all our students and their families an enjoyable and restful break and look forward to welcoming everyone back into school on Monday 3rd June.

Mr Luke Weston Headteacher Arek Hersh visits Year 7 On Tuesday 7th May, Holocaust survivor Arek Hersh and his wife Jean Hersh gave a talk to Year 7 students about his life. The students heard Arek’s harrowing story and were shocked at what he went through as an 11 year old boy during WWII. Arek spoke in great detail about his time in Auschwitz and the death trains and how his entire family (81 members) was wiped out by the Nazis. Arek was liberated by the Russian Army in 1945 after which he was brought to live in the Lake District with 300 other Jewish children by the British consulate. Our students listened respectfully and asked questions at the end including whether or not, after his terrible experiences, Arek still believed in God. Students were then given an opportunity to ask Arek questions and purchase a copy of his autobiography ‘A Detail of History’ Prior to Arek’s visit, Miss Shah set a competition for students to enter, the prize being an opportunity to have a kosher lunch with Arek and Jean. Students had to design a poster explaining what respect meant to them. Arek and Jean were very impressed with the entries. The competition winners enjoyed the meal and chatting with Arek and Jean. Arek particularly enjoyed speaking in Polish with Abigail in Yr 7. Some members of the Archbishop of York Young leaders award also joined the meal as well as some of our Year 11’s who have attended Arek and Jean’s talks previously and wanted to say hello to them! Miss Shah said, “We are so grateful to Arek and Jean for taking the time to visit Grammar and our students. We are very privileged for the continued kindness that they show to our school community.”

Student Council Radio Interview! Before the Easter break, the Year 10 student council took a great opportunity to speak live on BCB radio.

The student council have been learning about how we recycle in our school by talking with our catering management company, P&A Foods, and members of staff involved with waste management on site. The team have devised plans to increase recycling and reduce our single use plastic further in a bid to the school becoming plastic-free.

Before the live interview, council members worked hard reviewing what they have already done and making notes so they were prepared for the interview. Finlay was our main spokesperson and he did an excellent job representing our school and speaking about what we do. Well done to all the Year 10 student council team for their hard work so far this year.

Click to read the T&A article about our aim to become plastic free >> Year 12 Enactus At the end of March two Year 12 teams travelled to Beckett University to present their social enterprise work at the Enactus Regional Expo. Our Careers Officer Mrs Durrans reports: Our two teams were up against five other teams from Batley Girls High School, Leeds East Academy, and Leeds West Academy. The groups had to produce an annual report, which they handed out to the 16 judges. The teams then did a 10-minute presentation to their audience, including all the judges, teachers and student teams, about their social enterprise project. The teams had to explain who they chose to be project partners with (this could be a company or charity that they are going to work with to deliver their project), how they came up with the idea and about the journey that the team has been on so far. Kiera’s team developed the idea ‘Bags of Bliss’. The team worked with a charity called Nightstop to develop their project of providing people who have been made homeless with bags containing hygiene products. After the presentation they were able to network with the business representatives and successfully secured the products totally free for the first 20 bags that they will produce as well as other offers to work with another charity and organisations. Will’s team (Team Empower) created the ‘Goddess project’. They partnered with the Together Women Project as they wish to create a project that positively impacts women’s lives. They are organising a photo shoot for women to show them their true beauty and wish to then build on supporting women with their mental health. The team had a great success with fundraising for their project and created a support pack for women being supported by the project. At the end of the day the judges decided upon the winning team and other awards were presented to the students by Andrew Bacon OBE, Enactus UK CEO and Professor Damien Page, Dean of The Carnegie School of Education. Although neither of our teams won the competition, we are immensely proud of the work they have put into their projects which they will carry onto finish in the coming weeks, and we were delighted that Kiera won the ‘Team Leader of the Year’ award. Well done to everyone involved. The Greatest Show The evening of 10th April saw the culmination of lots of hard work from students and staff in the Music and Drama department.

Our talented and dedicated students performed our version of the Greatest Show in front of an audience of staff, family and friends. The students have been attending auditions and rehearsals since September and it was fantastic to see all their hard work pay off. The cast also performed their dress rehearsal on Tuesday for children from Eldwick, Priestthorpe and St Marys Primary schools. Both audiences enjoyed the amazing singing, dancing and acting so much they gave it a standing ovation - we are so pleased they enjoyed it as much as we did. You may not notice from the photographs, but one of our talented performers also signed many of the song lyrics stage right which added another layer of accessibility to the performance - our thanks go to Charlotte. Miss Mawson would like to apologise for the amount of glitter that parents will be finding around their houses for the next few weeks due to the stage make up! Mrs Oliver was really proud of all the students and their commitment to the rehearsals. Now on to the next one...... ! Well done to all those involved - it was a joy to watch.

Yr 7 House Maths Comp On Monday afternoon 32 enthusiastic Year 7 students took part in the annual Yr 7 House Maths Competition.

The 8 teams battled it out to solve mathematical and logic problems, showing lots of enthusiasm and great team work. Mrs Sands said, “They were a brilliant group, very well behaved, hard working and enthusiastic. It was quite a tough challenge and definitely worthy of a LORIC award for those who took part!” The winning teams were: 4th place (4 house points): Sunderland Team 2 (Oliver B, Archie J, Theodore M and Will A) 3rd place (6 house points): Milner Team 2 (Laiba B, Daniel B, Rohan J, and Lucas AB) 2nd place (8 house points): Oldfield Team 2 (Farhan K, Eisa R, Daniel V and Ryan H) 1st place (10 house points): Milner Team 1 (Zak B, Ben W, Eddison B and Alex VS) Best teamwork (6 house points): Oldfield Team 1 (Abbi H, Hashir H, Alexia B and Jannat B) Well done to all our budding Mathemeticians! High Adventure Over the Easter break a group of Year 10 students joined members of our staff at High Adventure Outdoor Education Centre in Cowling. Each student attended for one day of the two day trip taking part in outdoor activities as well as revision sessions in Maths, English and Science. The hour long revision sessions were spread out through the day with the team building activities in between. The high adventure activities included archery, low ropes (an outside obstacle course), indoor rock climbing, the labyrinth (under ground tunneling) and high ropes (an outdoor activity involving high climbing and a jump to a trapeze!). One of the challenges on the low ropes involved working as a team to carry cups of water around the assault course - the students worked really well together on both days. As a reward on day 1, the students were allowed to throw a jug of water over a member of staff of their choice, and they chose Mr Atkinson! Miss Hall, Miss Mason, Miss Mawson, Mr Atkinson and Mr Ashley really enjoyed spending time with the students and helping them develop skills and confidence throughout the day. Miss Hall said, “As the days went on the students became much better at working as a team - there were also quite a few students who started the day off without communicating but by the end of the day they were all chatting away. It was great to see lots of the students growing in confidence throughout the day with some of them overcoming fears such as heights or small spaces.” Well done to all the students who took part, we hope you enjoyed it as much as the teachers did! Yr 13 EPQ Presentation Evening On Thursday 4th April, a group of Year 13 students completed presentations of their Extended Project Qualifications (EPQ).

The process began back in the summer term of 2018 with 60 students signing up to the project qualification but only the hardy and committed had survived. The final 16 have shown real resilience over the past 10 months. The concept of the EPQ is that they carry out a project of their choosing and work independently guided by a staff mentor. Most students pick a project around a topic that they feel will benefit them in their chosen field of higher education application. The topic areas chosen show the great diversity that our students are interested in; ranging from Gender in Politics, Treating Leukaemia in the Future, and Language in Educational Institutions. The students were exceptional on the night; the group started the evening feeling self-conscious and worried about whether they would cope; however they finished the evening on a high, much more confident and having conversed with staff, governors and attending parents, discussing their projects with deep understanding and real passion. They were a credit to themselves and our school - well done to all. Thanks go to the parents and staff involved for being there to encourage and support the students through the process.

Yr 7 Litter Pick Last month our Year 7 Student Directors decided to clean up our school site with a last minute litter pick.

Year 7 Maddie arranged the activity with the help of Mr Foster who was happy to provide the gloves, bin bags and litter grabbers. The group spent a short time picking litter from our playgrounds and grassed areas to look after our school environment. Mr Foster was so impressed by their positive attitudes to what can be an unpleasant job that he has decided to award all of them with LORIC badges. The group obviously enjoyed the activity and mak- ing a difference to our school as another group have volunteered to take part in a future litterpick. We would like to thank Maddie and the Year 7 team and look forward to seeing what social action projects they will undertake next! Yr 12 Law & Criminology Trip On Thursday 4th April our Year 12 and 13 Law and Criminology students’ were given the opportunity to attend a tour of the Combined Courts in Leeds. They were shown around the courts and discovered the structure and nature of the CJS system. The latter part of the day provided the students with a unique opportunity to observe live cases. Yr 12 student Alex said: I really enjoyed the trip, it has given me a great insight into how the justice system works and has made me think deeper about what I want to study at university. It’s made me more interested in Law and the Criminal Justice System and motivated me to pursue a career in this area. I would definitely go again as I think the trip benefited me in terms of enabling me to have insight into the type of career I want to do and to help me complete my current studies. Miss Seeley and Miss Shaw commented that all the students were exemplary, a real credit to the school. Yr 7 Parliament Assembly & Workshop At the end of March Year 7 were visited by Rachael Dodgson from the UK Education Parliament Centre. Rachael spoke about democracy and asked the students ‘if the world would be a better place if we all agreed?’. The students decided it was better to have lots of different opinions and ideas. Rachael explained how our government was voted in, what a coalition is and how our Government is currently a ‘minority government’ and therefore has to rely on other parties to help them push their ‘bills’ through. Other things discussed included what constituencies are, how elections work, who candidates are, the 8 political parties with MPs in parliament currently, what a ‘bill’ is, how it gets passed and how long it can take, the difference between the House of Commons and the House of Lords (and the significance of the seat colours), the Speaker in the House of Commons and how important he is and the voting age. Rachael then went on to speak about things that our students might feel are important to them and how, although they are unable to vote, they can use their voice and make a stand for the things they believe in. Rachael explained how online petitions started by young people have been debated in Parliament and made real changes. Year 7 really engaged with Rachael and her message asking lots of questions at the end of the assembly – we think we may have more than a few budding politicians in the year group now! After the assembly, 30 selected students were awarded the opportunity (based on the number of LORIC certificates and achievement points they have received) to stay behind for a workshop for the remainder of the school day, where they planned their own election campaign. The groups decided on their party names by democratic vote, came up with their manifesto promises and presented them to the constituencies to gain votes and win the election. The 5 parties; Services for You, Save the Planet Party, Help for Homeless, Shipley Health Party and Thinking about Climate Change, all put forward some powerful ideas but the Save the Planet Party won the election with 4 of their candidate winning the vote in their constituencies. We would like to thank Rachael and UK Parliament Education for a really informative and engaging afternoon. We hope our students will now use their voices to bring about changes they want to see and also use their votes wisely when the time comes. Salters Chemistry Challenge 2019 On 15th May, Mr Allen took four Year 8 students to compete in the Royal Society of Chemistry /Salters Chemistry Challenge at Bradford University.

On the day students from 12 schools competed in two challenges in the University Chemistry Laboratories and also enjoyed a Chemical Magic Demonstration at the STEM Centre on the University Campus. Our students worked fantastically to produce a complex report, under significant time pressure. They carried out the 2 hour team challenge including numerous chemical analytical techniques, whilst no teachers were allowed in the lab. The team showed logical thinking, enthusiasm, team-work and fairness throughout. Mr Allen would like to congratulate the team on their performance and the way they represented the school throughout the whole day - well done to all! Yr 10 Brilliant Club Graduation On Wednesday 15th May, 8 Year 10 students attended their Scholars Programme graduation at Leeds University, ran by The Brilliant Club. The organisation aims to provide an opportunity for students to experience university. The students who attended had completed a 2000-word essay on a topic titled ‘Who’s Line Is It Anyway?’ which analysed the role of improvisation in everyday life. This topic enabled students to understand the differing expectations in different careers, and assess whether performance is an element of everyday life or not. Their essays were marked in accordance with university expectations, and they were surprised to see how well they were already performing when compared to university marking guidelines. The day itself was wonderful; helped immensely by the lovely weather, which meant we could complete a vast tour of the university’s campus. The students were impressed by what the university could offer them, especially considering how local Leeds University is to them all. At the end of the trip was the graduation, in which each student received their certificate for completing the course. The lead tutor, Duncan Marwick commented on how the students were resilient and a delight to work alongside for the duration of the course. Miss Frankland and I (Miss Watson) were thoroughly impressed by our students, who were engaging and enthusiastic throughout the whole day. They are now looking forward to the Year 12 course! LORIC Reward Assembly with Captain Lou Rudd MBE On Tuesday 9th April Captain Lou Rudd MBE came to speak to our students who have been excelling in their LORIC endeavours. Army Captain Lou Rudd was the first Briton to complete a solo, unsupported crossing of Antarctica at the end of December 2018. His epic 925-mile journey took him 56 days trekking through horrendous conditions. His story of determination and resilience had the students hanging on his every word with many of them staying behind after his talk to have a closer look at the equipment he needed and ask more questions about his expedition. The Captain shared his memories of coping with the ‘ice tusks’ which built up around his face as he trekked, having to snap them off when they started banging on his chest, how he relived happy memories of his family when the going got tough to keep him going and how he ate year old food found buried under the snow at the end of his adventure. His story heard first hand was an amazing experience for the students and we thank him for giving us his time and sharing his adventures with us. DofE Training Expedition Last weekend our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students headed out on their training expedition.

Last week 38 Year 9 students took part in the DofE training for their Bronze award. The group walked from School to Ilkley & Addingham Moorside over the moor and back again with an overnight camp at Ghyll Beck Farm, Addingham. Thankfully, like last year the weather was fine, if a little cold. All teams improved their level of competence with some excellent map reading skills shown and with some interesting meals cooked on their Trangia stoves on Thursday night. The pupils should be commended on their high level of map reading, organisation and general resilience (when the blisters and sore legs set in on Friday). We had one of the quickest tent deconstructions and prompt leaving of camp on day 2 ever! All who complete the required skills, physical and volunteering sections and expedition challenge will gain a valuable qualification. The qualifying expedition will take place on Thursday 20th- Friday 21st of June. Well done to all participants and thankyou to the staff who gave up their time to support the group. Year 8 students will be invited to an assembly at the end of this school year to learn more about the DofE scheme. They will then be able to enroll in the Award from the start of September. The Award is open to all students and there is no selection process so why not get involved! MFL Spelling & Translation Bees On Monday 25th March our MFL department held the annual Spelling and Translation Bee in school. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 worked hard during lesson time on their French and Spanish in the build up to the classroom heats. These in-class competitions were tricky but great fun and decided which of them would be entered into the in-school finals. On Monday 25th March, those with the most points from each class group took part in the school finals in the Hills with the Year 7s entering the Spelling Bee and the Years 8 and 9 entering the Translation Bee. Mrs Bowen said, “Well done to all competitors. Everyone did really well and the teachers were incredibly proud of you all. Congratulations to the winners and runners-up!!” MFL Spelling & Translation Bee Regional Finals Year 7 On Tues 30th April, Mrs Dean, Miss Fraser and our 3 in-school spelling bee finalists travelled to Sheffield Hallam Uni to take part in the Routes into Languages &Humber Regional Spelling Bee Final. Huge congratulations to our three competitors - Zak, Ihsan and Juwayriyah. Our students were part of a group of 27 who reached the regional final from an initial starting cohort of 1916 from schools in Yorkshire & The Humber. It was a very close fought contest, with a tie-break situation involving Ihsan, Juwayriyah and 2 students from other schools. Zak B and Ihsan came 2nd and 4th overall and will now be invited to the national final in Cambridge on Monday 1st July. Year 8 On Monday 20th May Finn R and Hishaam H competed in the French Translation Final and Ayshah A and Mollie W competed in the Spanish Final at Sheffield Hallam University. All 4 of them did superbly well to get to the regional finals, finishing in the top 52 of over 4000 competitors this year! An achievement in itself! Competition from the other schools was extremely fierce on the day. Unfortunately our students did not progress to the grand finals later in July, however they did themselves and the school proud. We are so proud of how hard these students worked to reach this stage and how they performed under pressure in front a room full of students and teachers. They were amazing representatives of Bingley Grammar School and should all be very proud of their achievements.
