Air Travel

Shannon Airport is an international airport serving , mainland and the United States. It is approx. 60 minutes by road to Lough Derg Yacht Club (LDYC).

Cork Airport is situated approx 100 mins from the LDYC. Cork provides air links with the United Kingdom and mainland Europe.

Dublin Airport is the premier airport for Ireland and its two terminals serve the United Kingdom, mainland Europe and the United States. Dublin Airport is approx 120 mins from the LDYC.

In terms of cost, all locations would have similar fares, therefore booking in advance would be key to getting best prices.

Sea Travel

There are three main ferry ports serving Ireland which are situated in Dublin, Cork and Rosslare.

Dublin provides daily ferry links with Liverpool (U.K.) and Hollyhead (N. Wales), Pembroke (S. Wales). It is approx 120 mins by road from LDYC.

Cork provides ferry links with Swansea (S. Wales) and Northern France. The ferry port in Cork is approx 110 mins from LDYC.

Rosslare is situated in County Wexford on the South East corner of Ireland and is ideally located to provide ferry links with Fishguard (S. Wales) and Northern France. Rosslare would be approx 150 mins by road from LDYC.

Belfast also has a ferry port which serves Scotland. Belfast is situated approx 180 mins from LDYC.

When travelling from mainland Europe going direct to either Cork or Rosslare from Northern France would be the most cost efficient rather than doing a land-bridge through the United Kingdom.

For the Mirror World Sailing Championships 2013, we were able to secure a 10% discount from main ferry operators for competitors.

2. Sailing Area/Access to the Water/ Tides

a) There are a number of race areas that can be used, depending on conditions on the lake, wind

strength and direction being the primary considerations. All race areas that are used are capable of

accommodating large fleets, in excess of 150 boats, which has been adequately demonstrated in

past events. There are no local anomalies that have to be factored in, therefore timing of races can

be as required.

b) The lake is non-tidal, therefore we are fully independent of any time constraints that this may

cause.

c) Due to the lake being non-tidal low / high water depths are not an issue. The level in the lake is

controlled by a dam approx 20 miles downstream. During the Summer time the level remains

constant, irrespective of rainfall / drought conditions. d) Again, being a non-tidal lake, currents are not an issue. The river Shannon is part of the lake

network and the only current is from the river flow towards the sea. This current is negligible and

does not have an impact on water depth or flow rate. e) The distance from the launching area to the race area varies depending on which race is in use. The

time involved varies from 10 to 20 minutes, depending on race location. The physical distance

involved is a maximum 2 kms. to the furthest race area. f) The race areas can be viewed from the shore. The Clubhouse, which was built in 2002, is a 2-storey

structure with a large open- air balcony that overlooks the lake. This provides a panoramic view of

the lake, which includes the race areas. Some club members have lakeshore residences and gardens

and preliminary discussions have indicated that spectators could avail of these locations to get an

even closer view of the respective race areas should spectators so wish. g) The club has 3 slipways which can be used for launching. All slipways provide clean access to the

water with no obstructions to be allowed for. Therefore we are able to launch 120 boats in 20

minutes. Given that it takes to 20 minutes to reach furthest race area we are in a position to have

all boats launched and at the race area within 45 minutes is an advantage we are extremely proud

of.

These outings have proved to be most popular in the past with our visitors. We will also provide a full social programme of entertainment each night at the club – table quizzes, talent shows, BBQ’s, live music etc.
