Czech Portraits Friday, Mar. 4 10:30am Vítězslav NovákNovák, Czech composer (1870-1949) Vítězslav Novák held an almost “cult status” popu- larity among his native Czech people. Like his mentor Antonín Dvořák, he used thematic mate- rial from Czech folk melodies in his music and was inspired by the landscape of his native country in South Bohemia. In 1908 he succeeded Dvořák as professor of composition at the Prague Conserva- tory and helped lead the next generation of Czech composers into the new age. Lady Godiva Overture Composed in 1907, duration is 15 minutes This piece was commissioned to open a Czech play of the same name and is taken from a 13th century story about the noble-hearted and beautiful Lady REPERTOIRE Godiva. It tells the story of the Lady’s efforts to end the suffering and oppression of the people in Coventry under her husband’s rule, Count Leofric. After multiple pleas to ask the Count to lower the • NOVÁK taxes, Leofric finally offers her a deal. Lady Godiva Overture The terms, which she ultimately ac- cepts, require her to ride through • ELGAR town naked in exchange for an end to Concerto in E Minor for the heavy taxation. Sparhawk-Jones: Art Feature ART FEATURE Elizabeth Sparlzawk-Jones NOTES ON THE PAINTINGS AL THO UGH MOD E RN in spirit, Sparhawk-Jones is one of those artists who continues the tradition of previous centuries. Many of her paintings are frankly and recognizably pictures of people, and of the way people feel about themselves and their situation. Other examples of her work are pictures of ideas poeti cally viewed, such as romantic love, or injustice. AIl of her paint ings may be described as icons of personality, highly stylized and symbolic images. Icons encourage iconography, the study of the forms of representation. Although a painting by Sparhawk-Jones can be appreciated as an abstract, esthetic image apart from its literary- meaning, the subject represented is as important, if not more important, than the composition and color in determining the total impreSsion the painting gives. The purpose of the notes that, follow is to suggest (without attempting to be definitive or fanciful) , meanings inherent in a few of these paintings. -

Frieze Los Angeles Press Release December 19, 2019 Introducing the 10 Shortlisted Ghetto Film School Fellows for the Inaugural Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award 2020 Today Frieze and Deutsche Bank announce the ten shortlisted fellows that will headline the inaugural Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award. Presented in partnership with award-winning, non-profit film academy Ghetto Film School (GFS), the initiative offers a platform and development program for ten emerging, Los Angeles-based filmmakers aged 20-34 years old. Frieze Los Angeles takes place February 14 – 16, 2020 at Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood. Launched in 2019, Frieze Los Angeles brings together more than 70 galleries from around the world and is supported by global lead partner Deutsche Bank for the second consecutive year. The ten shortlisted fellows are as follows: Danielle Boyd, Mya Dodson, Michelle Jihyon Kim, Nabeer Khan, Silvia Lara, Alima Lee, Timothy Offor, Toryn Seabrooks, Noah Sellman and Nicole L. Thompson. The recipient of the award, selected by a jury of leading art and entertainment figures including Doug Aitken, Shari Frilot, Jeremy Kagan, Sam Taylor Johnson and Hamza Walker will be announced at a ceremony on February 13 at Paramount Pictures Theatre and receive a $10,000 prize. Selected from an open call throughout Los Angeles, the ten shortlisted fellows completed an intensive three-month program at GFS each producing a short film in response to Los Angeles’ vibrant art, culture and social landscape. The resulting 10 short films will be screened at the Paramount Pictures Theatre throughout the fair, February 14-16, 2020. -

Alison Joanne GREIG University of Wales Trinity Saint David MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology Module Name: Dissertation Module Code: AHAH7001 Alison Joanne Greig Student No. 27001842 31 December 2012 Heaven in the early history of Western religions Chapter 1 Approaches to concepts of heaven This dissertation examines concepts of heaven in the early history of Western religions and the extent to which themes found in other traditions are found in Christianity. Russell, in A History of Heaven, investigates the origins of the concept of heaven, which he dates at about 200 B.C.E. and observes that heaven, a concept that has shaped much of Christian thought and attitudes, has been strangely neglected by modern historians.1 Christianity has played a central role in Western civilization and instructs its believers to direct their life in this world with a view to achieving eternal life in the next, as observed by Liebeschuetz. 2 It is of the greatest historical importance that a very large number of people could for many centuries be persuaded to see life in an imperfect visible world as merely a stage in their progress to a world that was perfect but invisible; yet, it has been neglected as a subject for study. Summer Star , Ph.D. Assistant Professor Sara Hackenberg, Ph.D. Associate Professor IN MEMORIAM: AN ODE TO MELANCHOLY AND RELIGION IN TENNYSON’S MAGNUM OPUS Melissa Thea Valk San Francisco, California 2020 This thesis dissects the role of melancholic imagery and religion in Alfred Tennyson’s poetry, with a special focus on his magnum opus, In Memoriam A.H.H (1850) and how the use of melancholy and religion act as rhetorical tropes in conveying the depths of his grief after losing his dear friend, Arthur Hallam. Furthermore, I analyzed particular cantos adjacent to a few of his other poems such as “The Lady of Shalott” (1833 and 1842), “Mariana” (1830), and “The Sleeping Beauty” (1830). The use of melancholic imagery is abundant in Tennyson’s work, but this thesis argues that upon the death of Arthur Hallam, Tennyson reconfigured his melancholic aesthetic that we see in his older poems to fit the melancholic tone in his elegy. -
Shamanic Induction of Altered States for Spiritual Inspiration
CHAPTER 4 SHAMANIC INDUCTION OF ALTERED STATES FOR SPIRITUAL INSPIRATION Carl A. P. Ruck Shamanism became a common term only after the psychedelic revolution of the 1960s. The word was first recorded in English at the end of the 17th cen- tury with specific reference to the religion of the Turks and Mongols. Similar magical-religious practices worldwide and specifically within the European tradition have until only recently gone unnoticed. In fact, they have been repressed from fear of contamination with contemporary irresponsible recre- ational abuse of psychoactive substances. The practices were derived mainly from ancient Egyptian, Greco-Roman, and Judaic-Christian cultures. These practices were also repressed because of the very real problems of the addic- tive potentials and the illegal trade in drugs. Anyone proposing to investigate aspects of this European tradition is likely to face professional shunning and a thwarted academic career. This is particularly ironic since the prohibition of drugs can be traced back to Plato, who recognized the true dangers of altered consciousness for those not sufficiently prepared for the experience. The recreational abuse of a sa- cred mind-altering sacrament is fully recorded in the great scandal of the Profanation of the Mysteries that occurred in the city of Athens in the year 415 BeE. Indeed, the glorious achievements of the high culture of the Classi- cal Age in Greece, including in particular the Theater of Dionysus, are them- selves a reflex of the shamanic induction of altered states of consciousness for spiritual inspiration. A similar official condemnation is apt to greet anyone investigating the psychoactive nature of the fruit of the Tree in Eden or the initiatory ritu- als of the long tradition of Western secret societies, tradesmen guilds, and 46 Seeking the Sacred with Psychoactive Substances warrior fraternities, going back to the Mithraism of the Roman Empire and continuing until this day. -

Anthony, Florida. He was 79. A native of Antigo, Wisconsin, Rice was a high school teacher before deciding to pursue a career in the horse industry. Several times leading trainer at Penn National in the 1970s and 80s, he became a pioneer in the yearling-to-juvenile pinhooking market, raising horses at his Indian Prairie Ranch in Anthony. Rice grew up alongside future Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and the two men shared a passion for horses. AHe was a dear friend and I can=t tell you what a great horseman he was,@ Lukas recalled Monday. AWe grew up about a half-mile apart and spent our whole boyhoods with these horses and traveling miles and miles to sales and shows.
