Harry Potter Wizarding Trivia

There is a new story in the Harry Potter world, and it comes out this summer! Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes place 19 years after Harry and friends finally defeated Voldemort at the Battle of Hogwarts, and things have been going pretty smoothly since then, but a new darkness is growing, possibly with links to Harry’s past…

Would you like to get your very own copy of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for free? Well, it won’t be easy—you will have to have complete mastery of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to win a copy at your local library’s Wizarding Trivia contest!

There will be three rounds of tough questions, all about Harry’s adventures in the first book in the series. After each round, the contestants with the most correct answers will advance, until only the most knowledgeable witch, wizard or muggle wins!

Book Launch — Alex W. MacLeod, The Tracks - a refuge

Juliette Cameron arrived at The Tracks in Sterling Reserve looking for a place to sleep and another drink. Juliette skippered a fishing boat at age seventeen and gave up on university at twenty-two. In 1951, she began living in one of five abandoned rail cars parked on a spur line on the wrong side of a broken down bridge. Archie MacKenzie lived in the caboose next door. Lank, Irma and baby Lacie lived down the tracks in an old dining car. Juliette was a delicate beauty but friends and enemies came to know her fierce strength and weak resolve.

The characters drive this novel. They gobble up life and wash it down with plenty of rum. Juliette distrusts loyalty and duty. She avoids having one man for a long time because it would interfere with having other men for a short time. But Juliette forms strong bonds with the others at The Tracks, including Victoria, who arrives inauspiciously in the spring of 1952. Those bonds are as sturdy and resilient as the steel rails their homes sit on.

Life at The Tracks can be steel rail cold or steamy hot.

Alex W MacLeod lives and writes in . He worked as a laborer, teacher, lawyer and musician. He has previously published short stories in Canada and the UK. The Tracks - a refuge is Alex's first novel. He created the characters and gave them names, but the characters wrote the book for him. However, they're not a reliable bunch, so Alex spent years rewriting and revising The Tracks.

Book Launch — Darren Greer, Advocate

When Jacob is called back to Advocate, he is not only returning home again, something he knows he cannot really do; he is going to face his dying grandmother and the people of the town who turned on one of their own.

Twenty years earlier, when his uncle David came home, it was to die. The response in Advocate was typical of most towns, large and small, in 1984: when his disease became known, Jacob, his grandmother, his mother, and his aunt, were shunned, turned out from school and their jobs, out of fear of an until-then unknown virus.

Like To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel beloved of one of the main characters, Advocate is elegiac, written by a first-rate author, about overcoming ignorance and prejudice. With wit and emotional depth, Greer describes the formation of one boy’s social conscience and takes us to a resolution that is truly satisfying.

Darren Greer grew up in several towns in Nova Scotia, including Greenfield and Liverpool. He studied literature at the University of King¹s College, Halifax, as well as , .

His first novel, Tyler’s Cape, was published in March 2001 to critical acclaim and was on the bestseller list of the Halifax Chronicle-Herald. Still Life with June was nominated for the Pearson Readers’ Choice Award at The Word On The Street in 2003 and is the Winner of the 2004 ReLit Award. Just Beneath My Skin was selected for One Book Nova Scotia 2015, and is the winner of the 2015 Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award.

www.southshorepubliclibraries.ca 8 Astronomy

What can you see when you look in the night sky?

What you see depends both on how well you can use your eyes to observe, and how well you can navigate your way around the night sky. With his special equipment to display images of the sky that are faint (a magic lantern!), the presenter will train you to see faint fuzzies such as galaxies, nebulae, globular clusters and open clusters in the sky.

Once you have learned to see properly, we will take a journey through the summer night sky using the signposts that point to the more interesting but sometimes elusive deep sky objects.

With practice, most can be observed with binoculars so please bring along a pair if you have them. After the show (if it is clear) we will go outside and find some of those objects in the sky. We will have a limited supply of binoculars at the door if you cannot bring any.

This presentation is appropriate for adults and children over the age of ten. Please arrive early as the doors must remain closed once the show begins.

Tony Schellinck is an amateur astronomer who has an observatory in Port Mouton from which he photographs the stars for use in this show. Tony has been a presenter at the Halifax Planetarium at Dalhousie University for the last several years, putting on three shows a year. He has also presented at Halifax libraries, the Kejimkujik Dark Sky Weekend, and the Astor Theatre in Liverpool. As well he puts on plays related to astronomy at the Hal-Con convention in Halifax.

Tony will be joined by Jerry Deveau who enjoyed the dark skies of Digby County as a youth and who now delights in showing off the wonders in the sky to all who will listen. He now calls Conquerall Mills home and has presented at Kejimkujik Park, public libraries, youth groups, and schools.
