I ,- 4 TOWN CRIER, DECEMBER 25, 1991 .Opinion frankly A QkHKER ASKED M£fO BRING LOWER INTEREST RATES. A SOLD/£tf ASKED FO« CONTINUED ^RLD PEACE. A POLITIC/AN ASKED ME FOR COURAGE AA/D WISDOM... speamngsoeafu by Kevin John Sowyrda AMD SEVERAL TtEHAetRS REM/^DSD MC 77ter Last Monday night's Yuletide special town meeting had CWRlSTMAS 15 ALL ASCOr V4E m its winners and losers, as meetings of the past always have. The real winners, other than those reclined in living rooms, cable-TV-connected to sewer controversy and budget housekeeping, were a few politicos who proved that the real brains in American politics are still vested locally. Just as Tip O'Neill said, "All politics is local." The losers, true to form, were those not knowing how to lighten up. They just don't get it because the primary lesson of politics is never to take yourself too seriously, lest the voters do the same. The ultimate winner is fincom chair Paul Palizzolo, who gave a stirring speech which should be the boilerplate for any aspiring school committee candidate in the 1992 municipal election. Rising in despair to address an education budget process he said has gone awry, Palizzolo berated a school committee reigning in King Leer majesty over "let them eat cake" contracts, unrealistic with the year's Depression events. The budget chief also assailed basic school services, allegedly double the cost of "town side" government. Aside from the special interests, voters seemed to relish Palizolla's AT/ME OF PLZHTi- dignified presentation, which if given a title would be remembered as, "While Rome Burned." AND PLfiwTYof MOPE.' Brad Jackson should get a tape of this one and just keep repeating it on the local circuit starting January 2. He'll consequently be a shoo-in. Better yet, Palizzolo should run - for president. Other winners, along with the new, comfortable seats, were the selectmen and town manager. Scrapping the point of view sewer connector and opting for a 12-man study committee (that voter was right, they hardly needed our blessing) was the smart political move if not the best policy for the sake of Wilmington's infrastructure. Traditionally, town fathers prefer not to miff these overnight neighborhood A grab-bag of gifts, slightly warped associations which are usually created via telephone, meeting in kitchen and living rooms, and consisting of 12 by Arlcnc Surprcnant office. or 13 members, non-dues-paying at that. 1 991: ANNUAL REPORT WINCHESTER HOSPITAL

Dear Wilmington Residents:

e made a commitment to the Wilmington community when we purchased the Regional w Health in Wilmington in March of 1990. We vowed to continue to offer the full range of medical services the community has become accustomed to receiving. As 1991 comes to a close, we'd like to share with you a review of the growing relationship between the Regional x Health Center, Winchester Hospital and you, the residents of Wilmington.

AMBULATORY SERVICES In 1991, over 25,000 visits to our health center were from members of the Wilmington community. Wilmington residents have clearly come to rely on the health center as a primary source for medical care.

To better meet your primary care needs, we expanded the internal medicine and pediatric practices at the health center. These highly qualified physicians, all members of the Winchester Hospital Medical and Dental staff, provided services to Wilmington residents on 7,500 different occasions in 1991. The walk-in/urgent care service, now under the direction of Jon Jenkins, M.D., Chairman of the Emergency Medicine Department at Winchester Hospital, attended to the immediate medical needs of over 4,000 Wilmington residents this year. Walk-in/urgent care continues to operate from 7:30 a.m. to 10;30 p.m., 7 days a week, 365 days a year, providing Wilmington residents a convenient, accessible alternative to emergency care.

INPATIENT In 1991, nearly 800 Wilmington residents were admitted to Winchester Hospital. The people of Wilmington have come to rely on our caring and experienced medical, nursing and support staff for their inpatient health care needs. We've provided them a full range of medical,'surgical and obstetrical services including our evolving expertise in gastroenterology, cardiology, pulmonary and orthopedics.

BIRTHS There were 82 new Wilmington residents born at Winchester Hospital this year. These newborns and their families continue to enjoy our Childbirth Center, and have access to our Level II nursery, a unique resource in this area which provides advanced medical care for infants with special clinical needs.

VISITING NURSE SERVICES Visiting Nurse and Healthcare, Inc. is part of the Winchester Hospital system which enables us to offer continuity of care to our patients. With many visits to Wilmington homes in 1991, we were able to offer support and comfort to our patients with home care needs.

'■ HUMAN RESOURCES In addition to our role as a healthcare provider, we are one of the area's leading employers with 95 Wilmington residents working at Winchester Hospital or the Regional Health Center.

LOOKING AHEAD Our top priority is to meet your needs by providing you the best possible medical care. By listening to you? our patients, and the physicians who serve you, we can continue to introduce new programs, facilities and technologies to meet your needs. As we l(K)k to 1992 several initiatives are already underway.

► A full complement of board certified internal medicine and pediatric physicians offering high quality medical services are available at the health center days and evenings, for your convenience.

^ The Regional Health Center will undergo significant renovation to reconfigure ambulatory services to improve patient flow and the delivery of medical care.

► This fall Winchester Hospital announced an innovative cardiology affiliation with Boston's renowned Beth Israel Hospital, in cooperation with our cardiologists, which will benefit all patients needing medical and surgical cardiac care.

► The Suburban SurgiCenter, an efficient facility for day surgery, will open in April in renovated facilities on the former Choate Hospital campus.

We look forward to continuing our growing relationship with the Wilmington community in 1992. We wish you a healthy and a happy holiday season.

Sincerely, *f> H Eugene E. Loubier -I President Winchester Hospital
