Annual Review 2016 Incorporating the annual report and accounts of the Institution of Chemical Engineers Working together to become the organisation of choice for chemical engineers Relevance in a changing world Chemical engineering must reinvent itself to meet the challenges of a changing world. This was the central theme in my presidential address. One year on, the proposition is arguably even more persuasive. Chemical engineering is more than just a set of unit operations. It’s a way of thinking; and one that can be usefully applied far beyond the traditional ‘chemical’ processes. How can our ‘boundaryless profession’ operate in an increasingly protectionist world? Global conditions, particularly the continuing slump in oil and gas prices, were already posing a challenge to the Institution before I took office. Around a quarter of our community is employed in these important upstream sectors. 54% of our members reported a negative impact on their employers, with projects cancelled, jobs cut, and training budgets reduced. The knock-on effect on our business activities led to a grim set of financial results in 2015. But from adversity comes opportunity. While 2016 witnessed serious belt tightening at IChemE, at the same time, Council initiated a thorough reassessment of the Institution’s ambition, strategy and aims. The initial conclusions emerged in July and were subsequently tested on members, attracting broad support. IChemE made significant progress in widening its scope in 2016, broadening its activities in energy and safety, engaging with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology communities through the ‘Biofutures’ initiative, and moving into formulation engineering. We pursued joint initiatives with other professional engineering institutions and more will follow. -

Annual Review 2019 Incorporating the annual report and accounts of the Institution of Chemical Engineers Led by members, supporting members and serving society The big picture and a systems approach I was honoured to be elected Deputy President in May. Spending six months as Deputy before becoming President allowed me time to listen and understand how the Trustees, Congress and members are working to move our Institution forward. Through Ken Rivers’ extended leadership in 2019, the Institution focussed on encouraging member engagement. Congress members were key to this and have done a great job representing their constituencies in the member advisory body’s fi rst full year of operation. The Trustees are continuing to listen to you, the membership, which is why we conducted the membership engagement survey in March. We were delighted that more than 1,900 of you invested your time to tell us what matters to you most. Primarily, you wanted IChemE to focus on: ■ being an ambassador (encouraging and supporting the next generation of chemical engineers); ■ better communication of our activities as a learned society and what we’re doing to infl uence policy; and ■ improving the volunteer experience. We are taking these actions forward through Strategy 2024, our fi ve-year plan that we launched in July that will enable us to be truly member-led. The activities described in this Annual Review are driven by our enthusiastic members. It is our members that assist chemical engineers across the world to be professional and technical leaders, addressing global challenges, such as the climate emergency and helping to deliver a safer profession and society. -

Annual Review 2017 Incorporating the annual report and accounts of the Institution of Chemical Engineers Led by members, supporting members, serving society Thriving in an exponential world In my Presidential Address I focussed on the implications of the digital revolution for chemical engineers. Specifically, I talked about ‘Generation C’ – the generation that has grown up in the digital era, and consequently, expect their interactions with friends, educators, employers and policy-makers to be digitally enabled. I framed this concept as Thriving in an Exponential World because, as we experience in our daily life, the digital world is moving at an exponential rate. The process industries are also confronting the challenge of adopting to, and thriving within, a digitally-enabled world. This was ably demonstrated at IChemE’s Advances in Process Automation and Control conference in October. It’s a sobering thought that before long, artificial intelligence, cognitive/self-learning, virtual reality and higher-level automation in process plants will become as commonplace as email. Looking back on my presidential year, it’s clear that both IChemE and our fellow institutions have more work to do in better understanding the impacts that our rapidly evolving world offers. How does IChemE thrive in this exponential world? One place we must start is by reshaping our engagement approach. Specifically, encouraging Generation C engineers to engage with, and support, both their profession and their Institution. This is a difficult ask if we remain stuck in a place that they don’t recognise as relevant. Prior to taking office, I had been working with my predecessor, Jonathan Seville, on a review of IChemE’s governance. -
