A letter from the Churchwardens

We are entering a new and exciting phase for St Michael & All Angels, Middlewich and St John the Evangelist, Byley. Candidates were interviewed at the end of January and verbal updates will continue to be given by the parish representatives.

The time before our new incumbent is appointed provides new opportunities for all members of our congregations to strengthen relationships with the staff team (churchwardens, clergy, director of music and family work, readers, pastoral workers, office manager, PCC Chairman) and vice versa.

Paul’s letter to the Romans emphasises how important each person’s God given gifts are to building up God’s Church.

Romans 12 verses 4 – 8 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do so cheerfully.

To continue to build up God’s Church and spread the Gospel throughout our communities

we must realise that all gifts and abilities come from God; understand that not everyone has the same gifts know who we are and what we do best encourage each other and dedicate our gifts to God’s service. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men . . . Ephesians 6 verse 7

Ian’s Leaving Party

Everyone was invited to a leaving party in church before the candlelight service. Everyone brought food, and there was a sumptuous feast. Mulled wine was dispensed, and there was lots of time to chat. Ian was presented with some gifts-a very special memory book, a picture of St, Michael’s (for his collection, to go with the one of St John’s from Byley), a triptych of Jesus laughing, and funds to buy some garden furniture.

Ian told us how he had very nearly not come to Middlewich, but had never regretted taking that fateful step. We wish Ian, Sue and the boys every happiness in their new life, but we’ll miss them!

Apology

We apologise that in the November’s edition of "The Messenger" we printed an article about the new Notice Board that now sits on Hightown at the bottom of Queen Street. This may have been misleading. In particular we would like to acknowledge with grateful thanks the most generous gift that made the new Notice Board possible. The board was provided by Will Moreton and family in memory of Isabel and Bert Moreton who for many years played a key role in the life of the Church.

We would publicly want to acknowledge how special it is to celebrate the life of a couple who gave generously to the Church in their lifetime and how wonderful it is that their family want to remember them in this way.

Once again we apologise for any hurt that may have been caused by anything that was said or unsaid in our last article.

St Michael’s is a properly registered charity, number 1127335 4

St Michael’s Financial Position

In the December Messenger we said that we would be reviewing the financial position once the results for 2010 were known. The PCC met on 10th January and reviewed the preliminary results for the year: the good news is that the deficit we forecast in October has been halved – partly from reduced costs and partly from increased giving - but we still have to subsidise the day to day operation of the church from reserves to the tune of about £10,000, which is not sustainable. About 50 people indicated in the October questionnaire that they would be doing something positive to increase their giving, and of those about half have done so. Some said that they would do so from a later date, and we are looking forward to seeing all the pledges put in place. We are not out of the wood yet, and the PCC will be keeping the situation under review. Please continue to pray with us about this situation, and become part of the solution if you are able to. Our aim is to break even by the end of 2011. The leadership of St Michael’s wants very much to see our ministry and the church itself expand over the next few years – but we can’t do so without a sound financial basis.

Flood!

You will probably know that on 28th December the water meter at Number 28 burst as a result of the very cold weather resulting in water flowing from the back door to the front door and out into the street for several hours. The po- lice rang Ian – no one had told them that he’d left – so he and a hardy band of volunteers (thank you everyone!) spent several hours drying the place out. United Utilities responded quickly and replaced the meter the same day. With the aid of dehumidifiers and the central heating over the next couple of weeks the drying job was completed and the building is being used as nor- mal.

Fortunately the damage was restricted to the ground floor. However, quite a lot of the flooring has been damaged: some carpets and vinyl flooring will have to be replaced; the woodblock floor requires partial relaying and then sanding and re varnishing and several of the skirting boards need to be re- placed. The good news is that we are insured for all but £50 of the damage, and we now know that there is one more vulnerable place which needs to be protected next year. Mike Reed

Church @ 28

Church@28 is a new and experimental Sunday evening service which aims to provide a friendly, informal and welcoming environment for both regular Church members and also those attending Church for the first time. At the time of writing, the scheduled services are 30th January and 27th February at Number 28, starting at 6:30pm and lasting no more than one hour. The service will contain elements including music, prayer, Bible teaching, inter- view slot and a review of the newspapers! All are welcome – if you are reading this article then it very much includes you!

Robert Reed is organising the service and can be contacted on 07834 287905

Missions and Charities

In 2009, we met for the first time a target the PCC had set some years earlier to give 10% of our ‘voluntary income’ – the income the parish receives from you and me – to missions and charities. Despite the financial situation, the PCC decided to continue this policy in 2010, and would like to do the same in 2011. In addition to this, we have also raised money for other charities such as the Children’s Society and the Missionary Aviation Fellowship.

We have however realised that what we do is not well publicised within the church, and in particular that we have not communicated much about the work of the individual charities, and have resolved to improve the situation during 2011.

The PCC have chosen four charities for 2011. These are:

St Luke’s Hospice Save the Family Christ for all in Andhra Pradesh South American Missionary Society

During the first three months of 2011 we will be concentrating on St Luke’s Hospice, and the following three months will belong to Save the Family.

Ian challenged us in December to find a ‘champion’ for each charity who can help promote the work they do. We have someone to lead on the first two, but are still looking for people to take on Christ for All and SAMS . If you would like to volunteer for either of these, please speak to me or email.

Please turn the lights off! Please note it costs more than £2000 per week to run St Michael’s !!! Energy is a huge part of that cost so please - Don’t waste it. 7

MIDDLEWICH STREET PASTORS

A brief report on our progress and experiences to date:

The Churches Together Street Pastors is now up and running and entering our fourth month of operations.

Beginning at 8 pm on Friday evenings, at no 28, a team of four sets out to meet up with the folk of Middlewich who are on a night out and might have need of either us or our services. BUT, before we set foot on the streets, we hold prayer and readings sessions, asking God to guide us on our walk and to be with us and everyone we meet.

We have been received very well by the various groups of young people and revellers that we meet, and are beginning to develop rapport with them. The most asked question in the beginning was “what is a Street Pastor ..?” but now we seem to be accepted as an actual part of the Friday night scene in Middlewich and the question is asked less and less.

With some trepidation we decided to put a team out on New Years Eve. What a night it turned out to be. Wherever we went, there seemed to be someone in need of our help or support. A steadying arm, a bit of information, a listening ear, and yes, the issue of our first pair of pink flip- flops all made for a most amazing night.

Street Pastors must gain the credibility of the community, so that the com- munity knows that the Church has come to them. We are on our way. Why not come and join us? We need more men, especially. Contact no 28 for more information.

There is always someone available to pray with you after services. Just ask. It’s good to pray! Equally if you would like some- one to come and pray with you at any time speak to Sylvia or Elaine.

Fit for Life

Fit for Life starts a new course on Monday 7th February Where? At No 28.

What time? At 7.00pm, with a light snack.

What will happen? There will be a video outlining the course, allowing people to make up their own minds about whether it is right for them.

If they want to join the price for the course is £25.

What did people think about the last course? This is what someone from the last course said:

'Fit For Life forever , is not a diet as such, you can eat what you like when you like and how much you like, its up to you. the course however, will with Gods help:- teach you about yourself in a new way, your hunger and needs.

Give it a go and feel the difference

Fit for Life forever will if you let it make you just that'.

Interested? Please contact Merle Ikin (01606 832636or Elaine Reynolds (01606 832596).

Volunteers for No.28 drop-in

Due to new jobs and other commitments, we have recently lost some of our regular volunteers. Please consider if you could help for just 4 hours a month. We particularly need extra helpers on Tuesdays to serve the soup. This is proving very successful, and is raising money for the church and other charities.

If you can help, please speak to Pat.

So that’s what an Archdeacon does!

On 8th January, Ian, our former Rector, was collated and installed as Arch- at a service held in Chester Cathedral. If you think that sounds pain- ful, it is really quite simple. Collation is the bringing together of the person and the task; for those of us who are not too sure what an Archdeacon does, the Bishop read it out.

“An Archdeacon is called to support the Bishops in their pastoral and evangelistic ministry, working closely with the Rural Deans and other clergy and the Churchwar- dens and people of the Diocese. An Archdeacon gives special attention to overseeing the smooth administra- tion of the life of the Diocese, in all its aspects.”

Ian promised to do this, with God’s help.

As part of his responsibilities, the Archdeacon is made a and gets his own personal place, or stall, in the Cathedral. The next part of the ceremony was for him to be installed (or put in his place, as some prefer to think of it!) Once the formalities were over, Ian’s first official task was to preach at his own service. He spoke, as only he can, on the passage in Matthew which de- scribes how Zebedee’s wife asked that her sons should be able to sit on Je- sus’ right and left when he entered his kingdom. It was good to see Ian’s sons taking part in the service. When the family ar- rived in Middlewich they were all little boys, but now they are responsible young men – in suits!

Lorraine Reed also took part in the service by leading the prayers with Joe Bishop. Afterwards, there was time for an informal chat over a cup of tea, giving time to renew old acquaintances or make new ones.

In the photograph on the front cover, Ian is seen with Mike Gilbertson, the new Archdeacon responsible for “our side” of the Diocese. To the disappointment of some, Archdeacons no longer wear gaiters, but they do have rather fine white silk robes trimmed with blue or red. For those of you watching in black & white, Ian is the one with the blue trim.

The Hunt for a New Rector

Depending on when this is published, it’s possible that the new Rector of Middlewich and Byley will have already been chosen by the time you read it.

There were six responses to our advertisements, and the Parish Representatives and the Bishop, with some specialist help, shortlisted to four and these four will be interviewed on 27th January. The candidates and their wives will arrive on 26th January and will be shown around the parishes and meet some of our people before the Parish Representatives and Bishop Keith Sinclair conduct the interviews the following day. Please note that Number 28 will be closed to normal business for these two days.

Please pray for us – Linda Webber, Mike Reed, Glenys Richardson, Bruce Gleave and Keith Sinclair – that God will give us the wisdom to choose the right person to lead our parishes into the next phase of their development.

The Return of the Recycled Teenagers

To knit or not to knit, that is the question … Or perhaps it’s better to ring, than potter and plant the hand made cards of outra- geous teenagers?

Decisions, decisions …. But why not ALL of them?

Yes, the Recycled Teenagers will be meeting at Willowmere on Tuesday 22 February to undertake skills, fellowship and good cheer, and invite YOU to come along.

This time we will be joined by our very own SMAART team, who will teach us how the bells work and play, and an expert Knitter to help demystify the tricky craft of combining sticks with wool. For the less daring amongst us there will be Potting up for Spring and Summer, and the ever-popular Card Making. There is also the chance that Hand Massage may make an entrance. Watch this space!

The theme for the day will be Creation and New Life and as you can see the activities will actually enable us to achieve it. How good is that?

Format for the day will be Prayer, song and Thought for the Day – then a cuppa – then activities – then a cuppa – more activities – then lunch and a cuppa – some more activities, and before we know it, it will be time to bid adieu to our friends at Willowmere until the next time.

Muster at 10 30 am – meet in the Village Hall, coffee and tea at the ready, and Taps is at 3 30 pm.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Liberation (written about someone in the grip of depression) By Simon Hamill-Stewart

Deep in the twisted turmoil of the mind Unravelled knots grow tighter, hard to unwind. O that the fire of heaven might melt the chain Of my imprisonment and set me free again, That as a child I might receive and know That of which I took leave long ago!

But fire there is, lit on a darkened day. Upon a cross raised up to show a way Back through the pain. Back through the agony of wasted years, And bitter tears, To find ourselves again.
