Area: Nationwide

Priority Group: Women, Older Workers (Those Aged Over 50), Workers who are experiencing social isolation

Main contact

Mike Douglas 07963 196368 [email protected]

Project Summary

Diversity and inclusion in the workplace are a key cultural challenge across Scotland. Age Scotland know from their Age Inclusive work that most HR teams accept the need to have a diverse and inclusive workplace. But what holds organisations back from making more progress is the low-level understanding of the issue across other senior colleagues in the organisation. The engagement of other senior colleagues is essential if changes in culture are to take place. The immersive unconscious bias project will be delivered across Scotland. The project will build an immersive Unconscious Bias workshop and deliver it to 15 senior teams within Scottish organisations. This project is a partnership between Age Scotland who are the leading organisation ensuring workplaces are Age Inclusive, Robin Iffla, a specialist Diversity and Inclusion expert and Interactive Learning Solutions, a drama-based learning organisation who are experts in using drama and film to enable people to experience their own bias. The interactive scenarios are a key part of delivering the immersive experience that will let attendees feel their own bias and so take action to change. There are four scenarios that are each filmed in four parts. As attendees progress through each part they learn more about the individual and uncover their own unconscious bias firsthand. At the end of the project there will be 15 case studies and testimonials that will be used to show other organisations of the benefits that can be realised by feeling the impact of unconscious bias and changing perspectives.

Organisation Family Friendly Working Name: Scotland

Project Name: Flexibility for Success

Area: Nationwide

Priority Group: Women, Older Workers (Those Aged Over 50)

Main contact

Lisa Gallagher 07812 200264 [email protected]

Project Summary

The project will build on learning from a successful Year 1 WEF project and ongoing work with employers to develop a more flexible, family friendly approach to working. Flexible working benefits people, business and the Scottish economy. It will address employment barriers, inequality and lack of progression in the workplace.

The project will directly support The Edinburgh Fringe Society and indirectly support many of their partner organisations through dissemination of best practice. Scotland is proud to be known for its vibrant performing arts scene, but for workers, the industry itself doesn't lend itself well to flexible, family friendly working, and the work therefore is often insecure and sporadic. This consequently leads to a lack of diversity and career progression for (in particular) women.

The Fringe Society is seeking to become more diverse and inclusive by adopting a more flexible and family friendly working culture. The project will impact most on women and older workers and will reach 33 permanent employees and 200 freelance workers. Focusing on good flexible & family friendly working practice and recruitment amongst both permanent staff and freelancers, the project will offer practical HR and culture change support, bespoke line manager & senior leader training, access to toolkits and policies, knowledge-sharing, peer support and mentoring. This will lead to a more inclusive, productive working environment benefiting employees/employers.

Organisation TRC Media Name: Project Name: RAD

Area: Glasgow

Priority Group: Minority Ethnic People, Women, Disable People

Main contacts

Claire Scally 0141 223 8820 [email protected] Margaret Scott

Project Summary

Rad is designed to address a key structural weakness for companies working within the television production sector in Scotland. Production companies have difficulty recruiting relevant staff from diverse backgrounds. Due to the nature of the television commissioning process, the speed at which broadcaster commission their suppliers (television production companies) means the companies often rely on word of mouth recruitment from within existing networks. This, in turn, makes it a difficult industry to break into for anyone outside these networks. Likewise, many individuals from outside these established networks are unaware of the significant opportunities that exist in the broadcast sector. As a result, television production companies find it difficult to recruit research and development staff from a wide spectrum of communities. TRC successfully developed rad to address this issue. By enabling companies to identify and employ new talent from diverse communities for a period of 8 months as part of a supported training programme this both creates a talent pool of candidates from diverse backgrounds for the sector and provides direct benefit to the participating businesses. Key Objectives: to develop leaderships skills in the participating businesses; to improve business output by introducing new cultures, outlooks and experiences to their development process; to train businesses in how to engage in new recruitment practices; to tackle issues relating to lack of diversity by creating new skilled jobs for individuals from diverse backgrounds. The training will be in Glasgow for up to 12 beneficiaries, 6 of which would be new to the programme
