View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Goldsmiths Research Online Statistical techniques in music psychology: An update Daniel M¨ullensiefen 1 Introduction Music psychology as a discipline has its origins at the end of the 19th century and ever since then, empirical methods have been a core part in this field of research. While its experimental and analytical methods have mainly been related to methodology employed in general psychology, several statistical techniques have emerged over the course of the past century being specific for empirical research in music psychology. These core methods have been described in a few didactic and summarising publications at several stages of the discipline’s history (see e.g. Wundt, 1882; B¨ottcher & Kerner, 1978; Windsor, 2001, or Beran, 2004 for a very technical overview), and these publications have been valuable resources to students and researchers alike. In contrast to these texts with a rather didactical focus, the objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of a range of novel statistical techniques that have been employed in recent years in music psychology research.1 This overview will give enough insight into each technique as such. The interested reader will then have to turn to the original publications, to obtain a more in-depth knowledge of the details related to maths and the field of application. Empirical research into auditory perception and the psychology of music might have its beginnings in the opening of the psychological laboratory by Wilhelm Wundt in Leipzig in 1879 where experiments on human perception were conducted, and standards for empirical research and analysis were developed. -

The physics of sound define the corner stones of this communicative framework, which is employed by animal groups from insects to mammals, of which examples of vocalisations are presented. Recording bioacoustic signals allows reproducible identification and documentation of species’ occurrences, but it requires technical prerequisites and behavioural precautions that are summarized. The storing, visualizing and analysing of sound recordings is illustrated and major software tools are shortly outlined. Finally, different approaches to bioacoustic monitoring are described, tips for setting up an acoustic inventory are compiled and a key for procedural advancement and a checklist to successful recording are given. -

Page 12 Oshkosh Scholar The Influence of Characteristics on Music Enjoyment and Preference Kristie Wirth, author Dr. Quin Chrobak, Psychology, faculty mentor Kristie Wirth is a senior at UW Oshkosh studying psychology and French. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in counseling psychology after graduating. Her ideal career would involve both teaching and counseling at a university. She conducted the following research study as part of the McNair Scholars Program during spring 2012. Dr. Quin Chrobak received his B.A. from Drew University, his M.A. from American University, and his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Kent State University. His research focuses on understanding how memory and cognition operate in complex real-world situations. Most recently, his research has begun to explore the notion that the nature of the relationship between witnessed and suggested/fabricated events may contribute to the false memory development. Abstract Past research has indicated that two specific personality traits, openness and empathy, may contribute to greater enjoyment of music that expresses negative emotions. Individuals with elevated levels of depressive symptoms may similarly have a preference for negative music. However, no research to date has explored the impact of both personality traits and depressive symptoms in the same investigation. The current study measured both music enjoyment (how much people like certain music) and music preference (how often people choose to listen to certain music) after exposure to negative, neutral, and positive music. Supporting prior research, this study indicated that individuals high in overall empathy (the ability to experience the emotions of another) had a greater enjoyment of negative emotional music. -

In his native Russia, Pasternak's anthology My Sister Life, is one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Furthermore, Pasternak's theatrical translations of Goethe, Schiller, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, and William Shakespeare remain deeply popular with Russian audiences. Outside Russia, Pasternak is best known for authoring Doctor Zhivago, a novel which spans the last years of Czarist Russia and the earliest days of the Soviet Union. Banned in the USSR, Doctor Zhivago was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year, an event which both humiliated and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In the midst of a massive campaign against him by both the KGB and the Union of Soviet Writers, Pasternak reluctantly agreed to decline the Prize. In his resignation letter to the Nobel Committee, Pasternak stated the reaction of the Soviet State was the only reason for his decision. By the time of his death from lung cancer in 1960, the campaign against Pasternak had severely damaged the international credibility of the U.S.S.R. He remains a major figure in Russian literature to this day. Furthermore, tactics pioneered by Pasternak were later continued, expanded, and refined by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and other Soviet dissidents. <b>Early Life</b> Pasternak was born in Moscow on 10 February, (Gregorian), 1890 (Julian 29 January) into a wealthy Russian Jewish family which had been received into the Russian Orthodox Church. -

25 Positive Emotions in Human-Product Interactions
ORIGINAL ARTICLE Faces of Product Pleasure: 25 Positive Emotions in Human-Product Interactions Pieter M. A. Desmet Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Delft, The Netherlands The study of user emotions is hindered by the absence of a clear overview of what positive emotions can be experienced in human- product interactions. Existing typologies are either too concise or too comprehensive, including less than five or hundreds of positive emotions, respectively. To overcome this hindrance, this paper introduces a basic set of 25 positive emotion types that represent the general repertoire of positive human emotions. The set was developed with a componential analysis of 150 positive emotion words. A questionnaire study that explored how and when each of the 25 emotions are experienced in human-product interactions resulted in a collection of 729 example cases. On the basis of these cases, six main sources of positive emotions in human-product interactions are proposed. By providing a fine-grained yet concise vocabulary of positive emotions that people can experience in response to product design, the typology aims to facilitate both research and design activities. The implications and limitations of the set are discussed, and some future research steps are proposed. Keywords – Emotion-Driven Design, Positive Emotions, Questionnaire Research.
