A PUBLICATION OF THE TURTLE SURVIVAL ALLIANCE Turtle Survival 2013 RICK HUDSON FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Strengthening the Culture of Turtle Conservation: TSA’s Expanding Global Network cues from the IUCN Red List process, as well as a prioritized list of turtle diversity hotspot countries, we are always looking for opportuni- ties where we can be both effective and strategic, partnering with other organizations when possible. Given that we often find ourselves in an emergency intervention mode, struggling to save species that have reached critically low numbers, many of our programs involve a captive compo- nent such as headstarting or assurance colonies. The sad reality is that we are seeing a growing number of species that, at least for the foresee- able future, have little chance for survival in the wild. As much as we strive to save species in their native country, some species continue to decline. Market driven collecting pressures are simply too intense for them to persist. For this group of species, and in striving to maintain our commit- ment to zero turtle extinctions, we launched the Turtle Survival Center (TSC) in 2012. The TSC is rapidly developing into a cen- terpiece of our network of global assurance colonies and we have finally consolidated much of our collection at the South Carolina facility. Three full time staff are now living on site and construction and renovation work has been mov- ing at a steady pace all summer. HIBBITTS Texas Cooperative Wildlife Collection, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, Texas A&M University, 210 Nagle Hall, College Station, Texas 77843, USA, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract.—In the United States, trade is monitored at different levels of government and state level insight requires combining federal, state, and local sources of information. Trade in wildlife and their products has implications on wild populations of species involved and introduction of non-native vertebrates, especially amphibians and reptiles, is linked to the commercial trade in these animals. We used: (1) federal databases; (2) surveys of pet owners at live animal expositions; (3) observations of sales at live animals expositions; and (4) data collected from dealers on the Internet to quantify imports, exports, and use of exotic herptiles traded in Texas. We recorded 1,192 unique taxonomic entities of amphibians and reptiles in commercial trade in Texas. A total of 949,901 live specimens were imported to Texas from 2002 to 2008. The top 16 imported taxa made up 73.36% of the trade. Internet and exposition-based trade was dominated by few species of common pets, with others represented in small numbers. Much trade persists in known invasive species and others that must have the potential to become invasive. We documented trade in 36 known invasive species, three of which are invasive in Texas. -

SHIS number 1 was a list of herpetological publications arising from within or through the Smithsonian Institution and its collections entity, the United States National Museum (USNM). The latter exists now as little more than an occasional title for the registration activities of the National Museum of Natural History. No. 1 was prepared and printed by J. A. Peters, then Curator-in-Charge of the Division of Amphibians & Reptiles. The availability of a NASA translation service and assorted indices encouraged him to continue the series and distribute these items on an irregular schedule. The series continues under that tradition. Specifically, the SHIS series prints and distributes translations, bibliographies, checklists, and similar items judged useful to individuals interested in the biology of amphibians and reptiles, and unlikely to be published in the normal technical journals. We wish to encourage individuals to share their bibliographies, translations, etc. with other herpetologists through the SHIS series. If you have such an item, please contact George Zug for its consideration for distribution through the SHIS series. Contributors receive a pdf file for personal distribution. Single printed copies are available to interested individuals at $5 per issue. -
Introduction
1 INTRODUCTION This book should appeal to amateur and professional herpetologists alike, plus anyone with an interest in the natural world, from outdoor enthusiasts to academic biologists. Because Florida supports the most diverse herpetofauna of any U.S. state because of its large number of established nonnative species, the status of Florida’s herpetofauna is im- portant to anyone with an interest in herpetology, biogeography, conservation, invasive species management, or general natural history. Previous Florida works consist of field guides, except for comprehensive accounts of turtles (Meylan 2006a) and nonnative spe- cies (Meshaka et al. 2004a, Meshaka 2011). This book contains up-to-date range maps and the most current information on the taxonomy, natural history, and conservation status of 217 species, plus brief accounts of 15 potential or problematic species. Biodiversity The State of Florida currently has at least 57 recognized native amphibian species (29 cau- date and 28 anuran) and 98 native reptile species (30 turtle, 2 crocodilian, 16 lizard, and 50 snake). Florida has additional subspecies that are still recognized: 9 caudate, 11 turtle, 5 lizard, and 28 snake. These numbers represent a snapshot in time, because new species continue to be described or found in Florida. Additional new native species will be added to Florida’s list as research, particularly phylogenetics, splits existing recognized species into multiple species or elevates current subspecies to full species status. Since 2014, 2 new dwarf salamander species, 2 new alligator snapping turtle species (Macrochelys), and a new indigo snake species have been added to Florida’s list based on the discovery and descrip- tion of cryptic species. -
