The Hindu Temple of Central Indiana invites you to a gala dinner, cultural program, and donor appreciation event to unveil the plans for the expansion of our Temple.

Dear Devotee:

Do you remember the days when you had to take a day off to visit a Temple? Until February 2006, Hindus in Indiana had to travel a hundred miles or more to Dayton, Cincinnati, Chicago, Louisville or St. Louis to offer worship. To celebrate a family milestone with friends, we had to arrange for a priest who was available to travel on an auspicious day to Indianapolis. We celebrated major religious functions in school auditoriums, the community center, and other secular venues.

In 2004, six devoted Hindu families came together and bought thirteen acres of land along German Church Road in Indianapolis, and donated it for the Temple. HTCI’s first fundraising event, a Mahalakshmi Pooja, raised pledges of over one million dollars with each participating family pledging ten thousand dollars. Since then, we have raised another million through various fundraising activities. The Temple Committee visited temples around the country and spent hours with our Sthapathi and local architects to develop a plan that combined modern efficiency with ancient agamas and recognized the many streams of Hindu tradition.

On February 3, 2006, building upon the initiative and generosity of perhaps 5 percent of the 10,000 Hindus in central Indiana, our new Temple was opened and dedicated to the Almighty whose grace had brought us so far. However, it was apparent even that day that our Temple was not big enough for the throngs of enthusiastic devotees, many of whom had to wait outside until the crowd inside had dispersed. Every Deepavali, MahaShivaratri, Holi and Janmashtami since then has proven to us that we must proceed speedily to complete the second phase of construction which will give us ample, separate, dedicated spaces for religious and cultural activities.

The second phase of construction will create a home for the Moolavar deities, permanently installed in the sanctified space of the Temple. Phase III, the ornamentation of the Temple’s exterior, is eagerly anticipated not only by Hindus but by the non-Hindu visitors to our Temple, who feel that the beautiful structure of the Temple symbolizes a positive movement in American society.

HTCI’s mission is to build a Temple with the broad-based, long-term needs of the community in mind, provide various religious services, create opportunities for spiritual enrichment and promote educational and cultural opportunities for children. By celebrating the diversity of Hindu tradition, HTCI also strives to unite the entire Hindu community of central Indiana.

To meet these needs in our community, it is going to cost between $3 million and $4 million. Having paid off our initial construction loan, HTCI now has $400,000 in the bank and approximately another $500,000 in pledges. Our community cannot realize the full benefits of a Temple unless Phase II is completed. Costs will continue to escalate the longer we delay the project. Thus, the Board of Trustees has decided to break ground for Phase II during 2008. For that purpose, we are planning fundraising dinner events, raffles and small group meetings to seek support. In addition, based on the advice of several younger families in our community and to involve the community at large, we would like to solicit and enroll as many families as possible to donate an amount within their budget on a monthly basis for one to three years by a convenient automatic deduction from their bank account or credit card.

Every dollar counts and no donation is too small. Like the chipmunks that proved their devotion to Sri Rama as He built the bridge to Sri Lanka, we should build our bridge to the Lord by wholeheartedly supporting the completion of our Temple. Please join us in this sacred work.

May God bless you. Satyanarayana Reddy Marri Fundraising Committee Chair April-June 2008 April-June 2008 10
