Additional vegetation field data were obtained from other sources including data collected for the Marie Lake Project in 2000-2001 (used in the Nabiye and Mahihkan North environmental impact assessments) and publically available data collected by the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI); occurring within the terrestrial regional study area (TRSA)). Data from all sources were measured within sample quadrats ranging from 100 to 400 m2 in area and were considered to be representative of ecosystem classes present in the terrestrial local study area (TLSA). All vegetation measurements occurred within the Central Mixedwood Natural Subregion and were located within 50 km of the TLSA, representing the same set of terrestrial species and ecosystems. Data were screened to confirm ecosystem classification and taxonomic accuracy. A total of 161 data plots were available to analyze plant species richness. 1.1.2 Breeding Bird Point Count Data Breeding bird point count data were obtained from field studies conducted throughout the TLSA between 2013 and 2014. Additional breeding bird data were obtained from the ABMI. This data provided breeding bird species presence and relative abundance for habitat types present in the TLSA. Data from all sources were measured using a fixed radius point count survey method. They occurred within the Central Mixedwood Natural Subregion and were located within 50 km of the TLSA, representing the same set of terrestrial species and habitats. Data were screened to confirm habitat classification and taxonomic accuracy. A total of 285 point count sites were used in the analysis of breeding bird species richness. 1.1.3 Species of Concern Species of concern (i.e., species listed as Sensitive, May be at Risk, At Risk, or any tracked rare species), habitat associations and distribution data for the Central Mixedwood Natural Subregion (Natural Regions Committee 2006) of Alberta were determined from ACIMS (2013) and ASRD (2010). Appendix J – Page 1 Imperial Oil Resources Limited Cold Lake Expansion Project Volume 3 – EIA Appendices March 2016 1.1.4 Alberta Biota Species lists for the province of Alberta were compiled from several sources including: Alberta Conservation Information Management System (ACIMS 2013); Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI 2014, 2013, 2009a, 2009b, 2006); the Canadian Encyclopedia (2014); USDA Plants Database (2014); Flora of Alberta, 2nd Edition (revised by J.G. Packer) (Moss 1983); University of Alberta, Micro Fungus Collection and Herbarium (2014a); Encyclopaedia of Life (2014); Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) (2014); University of Saskatchewan (2014); Alberta Environment (2014); Insects of Alberta (2013); Aquatic Invertebrates of Alberta (Clifford 1991); and University of Alberta, Alberta Worm Invasion Project (2014b). Information from published sources were next used to assemble a list of mammals, amphibians and reptiles, shorebirds and waterfowl likely to occur within the Central Mixedwood Natural Subregion (Natural Regions Committee 2006). These sources included: The Status of Birds and Vascular Plants in Alberta’s Lower Athabasca Planning Region - Preliminary Assessment (ABMI 2009b) ; The 2010 General Status of Alberta Wild Species (ASRD 2010); Wild Species (ESRD 2013); The Birds of Canada (Godfrey 1986) ; Mammals of Alberta (Pattie and Fisher 1999); The Amphibians and Reptiles of Alberta (Russell and Bauer 1993); The Atlas of Breeding Birds of Alberta (Semenchuk 1992); The Atlas of Breeding Birds of Alberta: A Second Look (FAN 2007); and Alberta Mammals – An Atlas and Guide (Smith 1993). The total number of plant survey sites, including detailed sites and rare plant searches used for this assessment totalled 439 (Table J-1). Sources included ABMI monitoring sites (in the TRSA) and sites measured as part of this project (in the TLSA).
