Index to the Captains Register of Lloyds of London Index to the Captains Registers of Lloyd’s of London: G (CLC/B/148/B/019/ MS18567) London Metropolitan Archives Introduction This document contains an alphabetical index to the Lloyds of London Captains registers which are held at London Metropolitan Archives (LMA). The Registers give details of the careers as captain and/or mate, on those vessels whose voyage details were transmitted to Lloyd's of London, of merchant sea captains who held British or British colonial master's certificates. By no means were all Captains British citizens. For further details please see LMA information leaflet 'Lloyd's of London "Captains Registers" and related sources', available from the LMA website. These indexes are for the series CLC/B/148/B/019/MS18567, covering the years 1869 (retrospective to 1851 for those masters and mates still sailing in 1869)-1911; captains still active after that date will be found in later series held at LMA which are not covered by these indexes. The indexes may also be consulted in LMA's Information Area. The indexes list captains by name, noting variants given, followed by date and place of birth, also noting variants. The certificate number, and its place and date of award, if known, are listed, with a note of changes in the number and the volume in which this first occurs. Not all this information is found in every volume: in some entries a captain may be known only by his initials, or his birthplace may be listed in a partial form. If information of this kind, such as date of birth, is not given in the indexes, it is not to be found in the original. Cross-references in the text of the indexes indicate names spelt in more than one way in different volumes, but this is not exhaustive, and all possible spelling variants should be checked. Where two entries are recorded in the same volume for a particular individual, both should be checked, as they often contain information about different voyages. Additional qualifications are given (such as "Steam", which entitled the holder also to captain steam vessels, or "Steamships", whose holders could captain only such vessels), followed by the date of award if known. The indexes also list the volume numbers within the series CLC/B/148/B/019/MS18567 in which the captain appears, with a note of the years for which voyage details are given. Dates of death, 2 suspensions, and cancellations of certificates are sometimes given in the original Registers, but have not been included in these indexes. Notes on letter G entries During the indexing of volume 33 it became apparent that a number of pages were missing from volume 19. This means that the entries on the first page of volume 19 do not match the entries on the facing page. For these entries only, voyages for 1874 and 1879 belong to the captain whose name they appear against (this particular volume has been laid out so that the first column is 1879 and the subsequent columns 1874-1878). Voyages 1875-1878 on the second page of volume 19 relate to captains the rest of whose entries have been lost. We used the names of the ships that captains were sailing on in volumes 6 and 33 to identify their entries in volume 19. As captains changed ships there were several entries we were unable to identify; unfortunately these are too early to identify from sources on ships held by Guildhall Library. Where we know there should be entries in volume 19 this has been noted; we have also noted where it is possible there were entries in volume 19 because there were entries in volume 6 and where there should be entries in volume 19 because the qualification date in volume 33 indicates this (captains generally first appear in the Register covering the year they qualify). Where entries appear in both volumes 6 and 33 we can be sure that the entry in volume 19 is missing. Entries we have matched to captains have also been noted by the name of the ship. • Lizzie Webber Official Number 32198
Lizzie Webber Official Number 32198 Author – Bill Swift Date 2 June 2017 1 Introduction The Lizzie Webber was built in Sunderland as an emigrant ship and was the first to sail from Sunderland to Australia. As such, she has been of some interest to family historians and her departure from Sunderland attracted much festivity and national press coverage. She never returned to England after that first trip and little of her subsequent life has been systematically researched. The internet has several snippets of information, all incomplete and many inaccurate. This monograph is an attempt to provide a more complete view, although there remain areas of uncertainty. 2 As-built Data Launch date – unknown date in 1852 Maiden voyage – 31 Jul 1852 Construction – wood with yellow metal and felt clad. Type – Listed in Lloyds Register as a snow, but in all other documents is referred to as a brig. Tons Old Measure– 280 Tons New Measure– 213 Her short career as a British registered ship pre-dates dimensions being shown in Lloyd’s Register so these are, at present, unknown. 3 Builder The first question to be addressed is who actually built the Lizzie Webber. No reports have been found in any newspapers available on-line for the launch of the Lizzie Webber, but there are no Sunderland newspapers yet available for 1852. There are many newspaper reports of Lizzie Webber leaving Sunderland on her maiden voyage, including the Illustrated London News which included an engraving of the event, and these all say that she was built by Mr Pile of Sunderland.

PREFACE. SlJBJ'IDT. I have ohosen as the subject of ~ thesis for the degree of Mast.er of Arts in history a biogr~phical study Of. of' the life and work of' the Right Reverend Frederick Augustus Bennett, O.M.G., Bishop of Aotearoa. In this research I have sought faithfully to delineate the man as he was ·and as he is today, and to make a fair and just appraisal of his life • s work as a Christian. leader of the Maori people of New Zealand. For history is really a study of man. The outstanding racial .features of his character and personality, largely derived .from his distinguished genegaogioal background, developed and brought to full maturity by his envi±onment and training, are revealed and portrayed to some extent, I trust, in the text of this narrative; as, also, are the :impaots he has made upon both Maori and pakeha society, by reason of his religious faith and teaching, ~angelical fervour, leadership in all matters 'of reform. .for the betterment of' Maori economic and social welfare, and, latterly, by his dignified service to the Church of' England in the province of' New Zealand, as the first Maori Bishop of' Aotearoa. SOURCES OF mFORMATION. In the course of~ res<ta!roh I have perused many letters, diary records, diocesan and news'PE7per reports. I_have had the privilege of many conversations and info:rmative interviews with the Bishop, and enjoyed the wa.:rm welcome of his family oirole at Kohupa tiki, Hawke's Bay. I have travelled to many of the localities mentioned, meeting and inter viewing many Maori informants who were ablle to contribute factual.

THE FAMILIES French of Belturbet Nixon of Fermanagh -,^Cr ^N^ THEIR DESCENDANTS The Rev. HENRY BIDDALL SWANZY, M.A. iPRINTED FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION.^ 1908. DUBLIN : PRIMTED BY ALEX. THOM & CO. LIMITED. PREFATORY NOTE. iiST'T'jf.O An attempt has been made in the following pages to put on record what can be discovered concerning the descendants of two Irish families which became allied in 1737 by the marriage of the Rev. Andrew Nixon with Mariaime French. The various families detailed on pp. 83-127, are descended from that marriage. The PubHc Record Office contains evidence of the existence of many other persons of the names of French and Nixon, who, from the localities in which they lived, were very probably of the same stock, but as no proof of their relationship has been forthcoming, as a rule they have not been mentioned in the book. It has been found necessary to condense the work as much as possible, and to leave out some biographical details which might have been inserted. I have tried in most instances to give chiefly those which come from unfamiliar sources. The evidence for the earlier generations in the 17th and 18th centuries is in almost every case clear and complete.
