My first love was an unruly Welsh pony cross, who, despite not being cute or especially kind, was everything I wanted in a pony. Mainly because he was mine, and that was all that mattered. My pony’s name was Geronimo, but I called him Mo. Like any lovesick fifth grader, I doodled pony faces and hearts filled with the words “I love Mo” all over my notebooks. There’s something special about ponies, from their sweet faces and willful spirits to their furry coats and love of treats. The fact that most ponies like to keep children and adults on their toes, well, that’s just one of the added benefits of life with a pony. Many pony riders go on to have successful junior careers, and I think it’s often due to the lessons they learned on (and off) the backs of their ponies. Hopefully this Pony & Junior issue will bring back great memories of a special pony or young rider in your life. We enjoy celebrating our pony and junior riders because they are, after all, the future of our equestrian sport. And while our future looks bright, it will be missing one legendary star -- show jumper McLain Ward recently announced the retirement of his Olympic partner and superstar mount Sapphire, leaving a huge void in the show ring and in the hearts of her many fans. Our Sidelines Facebook page was bursting with the news

of Sapphire’s retirement, with many of her fans wanting to know how they could get in line to have one of her babies! I would love to be at the front of that line! Kenneth Kraus, of PhelpsSports.com, was kind enough to share his story on Sapphire’s retirement with us, and you may shed a tear or two as you read about this mare’s amazing life. It was always thrilling to watch Sapphire and McLain jump, whether in person or in pictures, and I am glad to have been a happy bystander watching the greatest show jumper in the history of American equestrian sports. With Sapphire’s retirement, it truly is the end of a brilliant era. I hope you are enjoying Sidelines’ new look and our continued coverage of horse people from around the world. If you haven’t already visited our website at www. sidelinesnews.com and joined our Facebook page, please do. And to all the pony and junior riders out there, enjoy the journey – even if it’s on the back of a pesky pony! Alma Perkins’ favorite shirt says it all: “Live to Ride - Ride to Live.” At 79 years old, she is more determined than ever to continue her equestrian pursuits and encourages all her horse friends to do the same. “So many younger friends have told me that I am an inspiration, even though they are better riders than me!” said Alma, who is from Shreveport, Louisiana. Like many of us, Alma has always been a horse lover. However, she didn’t own her own horse until she was 30 years old and living in Texas, where her family rode nearby trails and participated in gymkhanas. Her horse passion eventually led her to the breeding of Arabians and finally to dressage. One of her homebred horses, Tommitosk (Tommy), was a very talented but “hot” dressage prospect. Alma decided to try riding him to music and this led to her enthusiasm for musical freestyles. She and Tommy discovered that they both relaxed and enjoyed working on choreography and eventually progressed to winning at 4th Level. When Tommy passed away at age 25, Alma started riding Charisma, an Arabian that she had purchased for her grandchildren. Although reliable and laid back for children, Charisma has another gear for an experienced rider. Alma calls her the “original Energizer bunny.” Wanting to give Charisma a pasture mate, Alma contacted Charisma’s breeder and trainer, Debbie Cinotto. Debbie came through for Alma a few months later when she unloaded Charisma’s 3/4 sister, Pandora, off the horse trailer. Both horses are double-registered 3/4 Arabians and black and white Pintos. Alma regularly performs freestyle rides with Charisma and Pandora and enjoys the challenges of selecting her own music and choreographing freestyle rides. “The chore is all my own,” she said. “I create the whole thing with a computer program Century Club member and just take it to someone who smoothes it out.” Alma started Alma Perkins and out using classic music, but then discovered that band music Charisma. for dance has a more constant beat. “I’ve used big band, show Photo by Ann Switalski tunes, pop and now I’m experimenting with vocals,” said Alma. “A bit of advice to the rider is to pick something you really enjoy, because you don’t want to get sick of it while practicing!” A highlight of her dressage career came in May at a show in Benton, Louisiana. It was there that Alma and Charisma became Alma and Charisma perform the 100th member team of The Dressage Foundation’s Century their test. Club. Daniel’s equine partner that night was Daniel Bluman TellsSancha la Silla, All his horse of a lifetime, who also helped him finish 7th individually at the 2011 Pan Am Games. Now a fulltime resident of Wellington, Daniel headed to Europe after the winter circuit to train with Eric Lamaze in Belgium. But he still had time to…

Tell us how it felt to win the $500,000 Grand Prix… It felt really good. I never expected to win a CSI 5* so early in my career. I felt really proud and happy for my team and grateful to all the people that helped me along the way.

Tell us your plans for Sancha… My number one goal is the Olympics. I will try to get there in top form and hopefully along the way have some placings in the CSI 5* that we will do in Europe. After the Olympics she will go back to Kentucky and have a break. She makes me happy so I like to keep her happy as well! She is a horse of a lifetime.

Tell us your career highlight… Without a doubt, the $500,000 Finale. It was my first CSI 5* win. It was a great class in a great venue. It’s the class everyone wants to win in the United States.

Tell us about your heroes… My riding heroes who inspire me to be better are Eric Lamaze, Nelson “Necco” Pessoa and Pablo Barrios. Eric has always been one of my riding heroes. He is a passionate rider that transmits a lot of good energy. The way he pilots the horses and produces clear rounds really amazes me. He has been very generous to me, is a good friend and is essential at this point of my career. Necco is for sure the best horseman the sport has seen. He loves the horses and knows how to produce and maintain a champion. He is a true horse whisperer. Spending time with him is fascinating, he knows the horses very well and has an answer to almost every question I have. And I have had many! Pablo was the first hero that I met when I was just 10 years old. He has been a good friend and helped me start my career as a professional.

Tell us who you would have dinner with if you could pick anyone, dead or alive… My grandfather, he was a survivor of the Holocaust. I hear from my family that he was a great person, very caring and loving to his family and friends. I would like to sit and talk to him and ask him a lot of questions.

Tell us how you relax after a competitive day… I relax by spending time with my loved ones, listening to music and meditating about the day, how to improve both my riding and myself as a person.

Tell us the best thing you can cook… Bread with Nutella

Tell us one trait you always look for in a horse? A horse that is careful and has a personality.

Everyone bitten by the bug has the dream at some point, but it’s a tough course to follow. With the London 2012 Olympics on the horizon, July 27-August 12, speculation isAllison rife about who will make theSpringer US 3-day team. One rider is Living The Dream in particular, Allison Springer, 37, has believed in the dream and in her Irish Sport Horse, Arthur, for years. She didn’t lose faith in his athleticism and talent and not once did she give up, no matter how harsh the disappointments. “Allison never got mad at Arthur,” said her mother Carolyn Springer. “She just kept working with him. She’s tenacious. She loves that horse and she knew he had all the talent in the world and had to harness that spookiness.” Allison received the best reward possible at Kentucky Rolex this spring when they finished in second-place and, as the highest-placed US rider, earned the USEF National Four-Star Championship, the USET Foundation Pinnacle Club and Arthur earned Best Conditioned Horse. You know that great scene in Rocky when he jogs up the steps of the Museum in Philadelphia, looking and feeling like a winner, with that glorious soundtrack… that pretty much describes Allison with her beloved Arthur in their fifth Rolex at Kentucky Horse Park doing their victory gallop. No soundtrack, but lots of cheering from fans packed into the sold-out Rolex Stadium… “Arthur’s come a long way,” admitted Springer. “This horse is a freak of nature. He’s a superb athlete. I know he loves his job. I’ve had to make him more confident. Now I think he understands that the people are there for him. He loves the cheering – he seems to understand it all now. I’m sure Arthur’s going to improve his dressage by three or four points. We’re working on our show jumping. To be in the top three, you have to do all three phases really well. This is exciting for the US – we have a number of horses that can medal individually and as a team.”

The Dream Takes Hold Allison had a bad habit as a toddler that she traded for a lifelong vocation. Her father Bill Springer offered her anything she wanted if she would stop sucking her thumb forever. The five-year-old, who had just met the neighbor’s pony, piped up that she would quit the thumb sucking if she could have a pony of her own. The Springers were flabbergasted: horses don’t really run in the family genes, but a deal’s a deal. That same year, Allison started in pony club. A few years later in 1984, she decided, while watching the televised three-day coverage in Los Angeles, that she wanted to event and represent her country in the Olympics. She started “That pony cost only $15 – then we had to build a barn, then riding to hounds with Fox River Valley and was awarded her colors put in water and electricity,” recalls her father. “The Olympics at an early age. It was through a mutual dear friend, someone who has been almost a second father to me, Francois Mathey, and my father, whose guiding light, helped us acquire the mare. I asked him if this horse was as good as Mark said she was and he told me it’s a phenomenal horse. I said, ‘ok, well Harry Gill and I are looking for a nice young horse. We’ll buy it together.’ Funny, I never even asked Francois what color she was. I never saw her, never sat on her, never met her, we just bought her,” Ward said. “I remember she arrived at our farm the day I was leaving for California to do the Selection Trials with Victor. I jumped her at three o’clock that afternoon in our ring at home and I knew from day one that there was something special about this one.” Ironically, it was ten years, almost to the day, in that same ring, that the decision was made to bring Sapphire’s glorious career to an end. Three owners have been lucky enough to share in the success of Sapphire along the way, beginning with legendary owner Harry Gill at first, followed by Hunter Harrison and current owner, Tom Grossman. “I’ve had three different partners on this horse and they should all be thanked and honored, and I’ve said all along, we all are lucky to have been in her life, not the other way around,” Ward smiled. As far as where Sapphire ranks on the all-time greatest list, Ward says, “She’s got to be pretty high. Everyone’s got their

She’s had a career that’s spanned almost a decade, she’s got two Olympic Gold Medals, and year in and year out she’s been just as good as any horse has ever been. In my opinion, she should have won one World Cup Finals, she was second in another. Two World Equestrian Games, two Olympic Games, six World Cup Finals, it’s a pretty remarkable record,” he said. “Any venue, indoors, outdoors, big open fields, small fields, and other than Aachen, she’s won almost every major grand prix in the world. As far as in the United States, her record speaks for itself. On paper, she’s, without question, the best horse America’s ever had.” When you mention the greatest, Sapphire’s record compares to most, but as Ward explains, different times and different eras of equestrian sport make for difficult comparisons when it comes to the top show jumpers. “Milton and Japaloup are great horses. Baloubet, Shutterfly, Big Ben, Hickstead, they are all great horses. When you talk about worldwide, you’re going into a much bigger ocean. At the end of the day, all of those horses are incredible horses,” he stated. “They all had their strengths and weaknesses. But, they’re all from different eras; they all didn’t go head to head.” “There’s always that argument too, is the quality getting better and better as the years go on and how do you compare generation to generation? To me, to be the best of your era, or to be among the best of your era is the consideration. It’s like the criteria for the Hall of Fame in Baseball, where you the best at your position in your era? I think you look at her and Hickstead and Shutterfly a little before her, but they were certainly the best of their era. Day in and day out, they were the favorites,” Ward said. “For me though,” he added, “she was the greatest. In all of the years I competed with her, she never once let me down. In a storied career of so many successes, there were a couple of disappointments as well, including the fiasco at the 2010 World Cup Finals. Sapphire was in her best form that weekend in Geneva and was about to add World Cup Champion to her long list of accomplishments when a still disputed and dubious vet check ended those dreams for Ward and his mare. “Disappointment for me and the horse, of course, but certainly no disappointment in her performance, she was about to win it all,” Ward noted. “But certainly disappointment in the bureaucracy, the corruption in the governing body and when you finally understand that everything is flawed. So, yeah, that was disappointing on that level. Performance-wise, the most disappointing to me was the Nations Cup at WEG. I feel that we really didn’t perform at our best. I was pleased that we were able to come back and perform well in the Individual Final, but in the Nations Cup, I was disappointed in the job I did there, not the horse, but rather the way I performed. I let Sapphire down on that day,” he admitted. Sapphire’s career comes to an end, but hopefully her blood, her winning attitude and her incredible talent will be passed along to her offspring in the years ahead. “She’ll be retired to Tom Grossman’s Bluechip Bloodstock operation, about 45 minutes away from our place in Brewster,” Ward said. “We, over the last year, tried to breed her with a carrier mare, but now, we’re going to try and breed her for real and get some baby Sapphires.” Any preferences as far as stallions go? “Yes, there’s definitely a few, but obviously our first preference would be Hickstead, so we’re hoping that can happen,” Ward noted. “Tom Grossman is At the 2010 World Equestrian Games. more the expert on that, and over the coming weeks and months, Photo by Lauren R. Shawn has found success as a hunter, jumper Catchingand equitation rider, from ponies to upjunior jumpers, With and has Shawn Casady relied on catch rides to be able to show on circuit. Many of his contemporaries might see his situation as a disadvantage; but Shawn considers catch riding to be a blessing in disguise. The opportunity to ride a wide variety of horses has helped him to master a natural feel and to figure out the horse and what works. Instead of posing on a familiar horse, Shawn’s focus is to show off the best performance of each horse by tailoring his riding style to the horse. His best advice for other juniors in his position – “Never turn down an opportunity!” Shawn is grateful for the opportunities he has been given by the owners of his catch rides and for the help of trainer Bill Schaub and Ashland Farms. “The biggest benefit to catch riding is learning to be adaptable,” he said. “The advantage of catch riding is that there isn’t enough time to get too comfortable riding a certain way.” Shawn said he has learned to change his technique and learned new ways to adjust to a horse’s needs. The horse industry has also taught Shawn how to manage time, network and communicate: skills that help him in school. With a demanding schedule, Shawn hasn’t attended a regular high school, but instead attends #1 Education Place in Wellington, Florida, through the University of Nebraska. Looking back on his junior career, Shawn says he has no regrets. Choosing an alternative education was a big decision, but he stands by this choice that has helped him to pursue his riding career. While Shawn has Olympic dreams, right now he is focused on, “learning everything I can and learning how to ride every type of horse.” Though his success might substantiate bragging rights, Shawn remains humble and appreciative. He strives to improve from his mistakes while at the same time treasuring every success. “I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the horses I have been given to ride,” he said.

My Line: By Sarah Ward

As everyone is getting revved up for Pony Finals, I find it only fitting to tell my one and onlyMy pony experienceFirst – as itPony is highly amusing and something that I still think of every day. I originally started riding at the age of five at Chastain Horse Park in Atlanta, Georgia, having fallen in love with a pony by the name of Misty. At the time, Chastain Park was a shadow of its former self – and the horse park was due for a renovation. I was also struggling with extreme Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and because of this was going through a serious germaphob phase. I couldn’t touch a horse without having to get my hands on some hand sanitizer (Monk anyone? Or am I already showing my age here?). When the renovations began, instead of switching barns, I quit altogether. However, I was bitten with the horse bug and shortly before my 13th birthday, my mom decided it was time to get me back in the saddle. By this time, I was too tall for a pony so I got my first horse, an off-the-track Thoroughbred named Happy. He had more than a few screws loose; but at the time he was all we could afford and to me he was everything I dreamed of and more. However, the time came when I needed something a bit more sane (I still have Happy Sarah and Pony – true love! today, and he is happily living out his days the way he should be!). Moose followed my grumpy Happy and when I tried my next horse Harmony, I was introduced to a palomino paint pony by the name of Cameron. I had not ridden many ponies since Misty and I had the time of my life on Cameron – I was actually trying him for another customer at Chastain. Unfortunately for my parents, I had fallen in love. In my eyes, Cameron was the cutest sweetest thing I had ever seen. He jumped in good form and was a blast to ride – that’s all I cared about. In reality, Cameron was the devil in pony form – he had a horrible attitude and was a stopper. Fortunately, because of this, he was dirt cheap – and Cameron somehow maneuvered his way onto the trailer with big beautiful Harmony – everything that I should have had in a horse. I will never forget the day Harmony and Cameron walked off the trailer. Harmony stepped off – a shining chestnut covered in chrome. I swear I heard people gasping when he stepped off, he was that beautiful. However, he was followed by Cameron – completely covered in manure stains and his ears pinned flat on his head; but all my friends ran straight to him. Despite his bad attitude, he was impossible not to love. When we finally got him cleaned up, we put a stick on him only to discover that he was 14.2 ½ - and that was us pushing the stick down. Because of this, he became affectionately known around the barn as “Pony,” and his bad attitude earned him the show name “Look Don’t Touch.” I showed him in Long Stirrup before we moved into the jumper ring, where his talent truly could shine. He loved running around the ring like a crazy man and never have I had more fun in a ring then when Pony and I were together. So that’s my pony story. Pony is currently living out his days on a Saddlebred farm in Tennessee, playing first pony to an adorable young girl. I miss him everyday, but will never ever forget him! 56 SIDELINES JULY 2012 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE SIDELINES JULY 2012 57 e National5Q Dressage Pony Dressage Champion Bebe Davis By Lauren R. Giannini

Barbara (Bebe) Davis, who belongs to a small but very dedicated group of FEI Pony Dressage riders, 12-16, enjoyed a very successful winter season in Florida. FEI Pony Test movements, ranging in difficulty from Second Level to Prix St. Georges, include half pass at trot, walk half- pirouettes, collected and extended trot and canter, counter canter and 8-meter voltes (circles). Bebe rides with Dr. Cesar Parra at his Piaffe Performance Farms (NJ & FL) where trainer Katie Riley “really helps me; but keeps me laughing at the same time.” Bebe is a member of Somerset Hills Pony Club (NJ).

What triggered your interest in dressage? Horses are not really in my family. My grandfather used to ride when he was my age and my mom took a few lessons when she was in her 20s; but my parents never thought I’d be into horses. I loved the pony rides at the farmer’s market, so my mom thought it would be fun for me to take lessons. I was four when I started at a barn down the street from my house on a pony who was probably 30 years old. I got hooked on dressage about the age of six. I started dressage to improve my jumping and the trainer put me on a lunge line so that I could learn to have a good seat and balance. Grady and A Hoof And A Prayer were also champions and won the USEF pony medal and placed first in the southwest division of WCHR in the pony division for 2011. Sidelines’ California correspondent caught up with Grady, an enthusiastic and dedicated rider, at The Ranch and Coast Horse Show in Del Mar and had a chance to chat with the young rider who is certainly “one to watch” in the future!

How did you become interested in riding? My brother played on a soccer team with two girls who also rode horses and one day I went to the barn and watched and that got me hooked.

What do you like to do when you aren’t riding? I love to take pictures and I like to play roller hockey, soccer and volleyball.

Have you ever had an embarrassing moment at a horse show? Yes! Quite recently, I was catch riding a pony at a horse show and I came to the in and out and it stopped and I fell off! It was quite embarrassing!

What riders do you admire? John French, Nick Hanness and Rich Fellers, they’re great riders!

What are you goals as a rider? I completed my goal for last year, which was to win the West Coast Pony Finals over all. Now I would like to get a horse and win the Onondarka Medal Finals!

What has been your best memory with ponies? When I won the West Coast Pony Finals that was a great accomplishment because one of my very best friends was second and it was super close. Our scores were so close, like a .25 difference after the first round and then I beat her by .5!

What kind of music do you like to listen to? That’s hard, I like a lot. I like Taylor Swift and her songs Mean and La La La; Lady Antebellum and their song Dancing Away With My Heart; and Adele’s song Rolling In The Deep.

Do you have a favorite movie? The Proposal

Juniorside By Lauren Corey

Can you remember the days when you felt like you could conquer anything? High school is coming to a close and this summer is my last chance to show Juniorsin the junior division. I am dreadingConquer having to say the Show World goodbye to all of my favorite equitation medals. I decided to talk with several juniors at my barn to learn how they feel about showing. I miss the days where I was so sure I would win all the medal finals and go to the Maclay as the majority of juniors at my barn are.

Big Talent, Big Ambitions As the oldest teenager at my barn, I frequently have lessons with some of the younger girls (although it does nothing for my confidence when they outperform me!). Michelle Morsey, a 14-year-old, has been riding at my show barn, McIntosh Stables, since she was nine and constantly receives top ribbons in her equitation. Michelle has big ambitions, and says “I hope to get a new horse soon so that I can qualify for the Maclay finals. I also would love to do the big hunter derbies and perhaps the grand prix’s when I’m 18.” Michelle currently owns a cute buckskin, who While watching the grand prix at the Woodside Summer Circuit Opener, the is affectionately called Bucky. The name nearly gave girls make the letter “M” to show their McIntosh pride! her mother heart failure (not to mention some of the Photo by Toni McIntosh assistant trainers who would have to ride him), but I have never once seen that horse buck. They are such a great I met Molly Zisook, 14, when she came to McIntosh about three pair and really stand out in the equitation. I can’t wait to see them years ago with her occasionally bratty pony, Maddy. I would continue to grow together and dominate the West Coast Show always get Molly and Maddy mixed up because the names are Circuit! so similar and I am always terrible at remembering names. One time when I walked up to Molly and started asking her about her pony, Molly, she responded, “Really, Lauren? For the last time, MY name is Molly….” Once I finally remembered her name, we became great friends. Sometimes I would school her pony when she was naughty and Molly would let me ride her mom’s horses too. Molly had always wanted to excel in the pony divisions and was looking for a new large pony to move up on.

Change of Plans We were both devastated when she had to move to Chicago, but we still video chat at least once a week. Shortly after moving, Molly’s dad bought her a gorgeous hunter, C’est Si Bon. However, “Bon Bon” was located in Florida because they found her at the Winter Equestrian Festival. Since then, Molly has been flying out at least once a month to compete and they have been cleaning up in the children’s hunters. Molly says her biggest accomplishments are “winning reserve champion children’s hunter at week seven of WEF and receiving 3rd place at the Horse and Hound Medal Finals.” She hopes to compete in the hunter derbies and I know it will only be a short time before this dream becomes a reality. When Molly sets her mind to something, you can be sure to see results! I enjoy my lessons with the younger girls because while they can occasionally learn from me, I learn so much more from their ability to dream and conquer! These girls inspire me to remember that anything is possible (at risk of sounding Michelle Morsey and Bucky competing in the Horse and Hound cheesy). I know these girls will be the talk of the horse medal at the Woodside Spring Preview. world someday and I hope they always remember to keep on Photo by Yulia Morsey dreaming big. 64 SIDELINES JULY 2012 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE SIDELINES JULY 2012 65 ePony Kids Name: Sophie Aramburu Hometown: Houston, Texas Ponies/Horses: Rambler, Lady, Belle, Joy and Golioth Trainers: Hannah Langston Of all the ponies you’ve ridden, which is your favorite? Also spotted at Interagro Farm in Brazil were Dr. Hilary Clayton, who snuck over to the farm before speaking at a Veterinary Seminar in Brazil, and Dressage Today editor, Patty Lasko, who spent a lot of time riding Lusitanos and “fell in love!”

The dressage community was shocked and deeply saddened to hear that Jim Lewis died. Jim was O Judge Linda Zang’s husband and one of the sport’s kindest fans. Jim, retired from training racehorses, traveled with Linda to dressage shows. His kind nature, gentle laugh and true enthusiasm for the sport of dressage will be missed.

The Village of Wellington Council took action that could jeopardize the new dressage and derby venue at the corner of Pierson and South Shore Blvd. The council voted to revoke the master plan on a 3-2 vote. Councilman Howard Coates gave a speech describing how the Pierson Road interest is trying to dismantle the dressage industry and are working against any equestrian venue at that location. The VOW attorney is to research the matter.

The U.S. Dressage Federation announced the Olympic hopeful and sweetheart on the dressage rodeo, Adrienne Lyle, dates and locations for the 2013 Great American picked up support in the form of a very nice sponsorship with Premier Insurance Group/USDF Regional Dressage Equestrian, who make the Brentina Arena and ProTex footing. Championships for each of the nine USDF regions. 72 SIDELINES JULY 2012 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE BARNS / FARMS / TRAINERS / CLUBS DIRECTORY Go to www.sidelinesnews.com for active links to Barns, Farms, Trainers and Clubs websites as shown below. Dana Bauer may be a mom and wife, as well as a psychologist by degree, but thanks to the fact that she loves horses and drawing she has also become a successful entrepreneur! Dana, who lives in St. Clair, Michigan, started “Dana’s Doodles” ten years ago and her Dana’s Doodles Horse Art & Gifts has become a favorite of equestrians everywhere. Sidelines is also a big fan of Dana’s Doodles and we are pleased to announce that she will be drawing a monthly cartoon for us. Our readers will be delighted by her equine inspirations, which begin with this issue! We chatted with Dana, the Queen of Doodles, to find out what makes Dana doodle!

When did you fall in love with horses? I don’t remember ever not loving horses! It took a lot of constant begging; but I finally got riding lessons when I was 12. As part of my 4-H club, I ended up trying dressage, jumping, cross-country, western pleasure and trail classes. All on the same – and probably tired – horse, of course!

When did you fall in love with drawing? Just like horses, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love to draw.

What inspired Dana’s Doodles? Nostalgia for my horse show days. I dabbled in everything, so there were plenty of mishaps and funny moments.

What do people like best about Dana’s Doodles? T-shirts and stall signs, for sure! I started out just selling prints; but customers wanted my artwork in a way that was functional, too. And you can never have enough barn shirts! Wild Horsefeathers catalog long before mine. I don’t think she knows I’ve been stalking her for years now, so I would be really Do you have a horse in your life now? nervous if I interviewed her! We don’t have a horse right now; but we hang out at the barn all the time. I’m married with a four year old son and two year Do you listen to music when you draw? old daughter. The kids love going to the barn with me; but my I listen to Roadhouse on Sirius all the time. The old country songs son prefers the ducks and cows over the horses. My daughter put me in a sweeter place. I’m not good at doodling if I’m upset. I is totally into ponies. She puts carrots in a toy shopping cart and love Blue Boy and Four Walls by Jim Reeves, Papa was a Rodeo walks the aisle passing them out. My sister, who lives near me, is by the Magnetic Fields, Jackson by Johnny Cash, and Oh What a also my partner in crime with all things horse related. World by Rufus Wainwright.

What’s the best meal you can cook? What’s the best advice you’ve followed? Sweet potato chili with cilantro and black beans As far as Dana’s Doodles goes, the best advice comes from customers. When I listen to what they want, my business grows! If you could interview anyone, who would it be? I would love to talk to Polly Paintbrush! She was a huge Dana’s Doodles can be found at www.danasdoodles.com. “Like” inspiration to me when starting my business. FITS designed eSidelights Claire with a streamlined silhouette to follow a woman’s curves. The design sought to be feminine, flattering and to eliminate that bulky under-the-coat look. A stylish wrap collar complimented it all. Claire The Making of ‘Claire’ needed to have impeccable tailoring as all of FITS’ wear. And does. A subtle “For The Ride of Your Life” or polka dot twill, tape accent under the placket adds an element of fun. This is, after all, a company named Fun In The Saddle and it shows. A Seersucker version gives riders a choice of styles as does the striped option. Colors are Pink, Dove Grey, Blue/White Stripe and of course, White. The Seersucker is Blue. Sizes are XSM (0-2), SM (4-6), MED (8-10), LRG (12-14), XL (16-18). At $144, the long lasting Claire is a great deal of shirt for the price. Please see fit, durability, flexibility are the words they use first - not fashion, look, www.PonyBeds.com or call 855.298.1908 for pricing and appearance or style. ordering information. Of course they want their equestrian apparel to be pleasing to the eye and flattering to wear. But it must first perform whether in training or in show. “Cute” and “pretty” are not at the top of the list. And thus FITS apparel at heart recognizes that their customers are essentially hard working athletes. Take the Claire show shirt. Naturally the shirt must look good. Yet when FITS created it the goal was more challenging. A performance show shirt designed especially for hunter and jumper riders who needed a classic appearing shirt but so much more than was available. Riders needed a fabric that stretched in every direction, with every move. They wanted it to be feather weight and whisper soft, breathing and cooling. And it must not bulk under show coats. The hunt was on for the perfect fabric and Silk Touch™ was born. Now it was time to make it ultimately comfortable by adding powermesh underarm gussets for maximum ventilation. Next was the elimination of seams for chafe free comfort. UV protection needed to be built into the fabric and it was. Only now was attention turned to the shirt’s style. PonyPup beds will delight your canine friends. 76 SIDELINES JULY 2012 FOR HORSE PEOPLE • ABOUT HORSE PEOPLE REAL ESTATE DIRECTORY Go to www.sidelinesnews.com for active links to realtor websites as shown below.
