TEAM SERIES Northwestern State leads 1-0 HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Northwestern State is building quite a second-half resume in the early stages of Southland Conference Jan. 30, 2014 at Northwestern State 72, Incarnate Word 66 play. For the second time in as many conference road games, the Lady Demons overcame a halftime deficit to emerge victorious, Longest win streak: NSU W1 (2014-present) this time storming past Sam Houston State in the final 20 minutes to post a 66-57 victory Monday night at Bernard G. Johnson Current streak: NSU W1 Coliseum. “Our returners understand conference play and the importance of every possession and how valuable it is,” third-year co-head coach Brooke Stoehr said. “Anytime we get that production that’s balanced the way we have the last two games, valuing the ball, they understand it’s a possession game, and I’m really proud of our team for being able to come on the road and win.” Monday’s win marked off a few firsts for the Lady Demons. Northwestern State (7-6, 2-0 Southland Conference) posted its first win in Huntsville since the 2004-05 season and notched its first 2-0 conference start since the 2010-11 season. NSU won its first two conference road games for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The loss drops Sam Houston to 2-10 overall and 1-1 in Southland play. The Lady Demons nabbed the victory with a second-half surge that mirrored their performance at Houston Baptist on Friday. NSU fell behind by 10 in the first half, but a 12-5 run in the final 5:31 of the half cut the Sam Houston lead to three at halftime. In the final 20 minutes, the Lady Demons’ offensive balance took over. Chelsea Rogers, who scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half, hit three go-ahead field goals in the final 13:56, including a 3-pointer that snapped a 42-all tie and put NSU ahead to stay. Rogers was one of four Lady Demons who reached double figures, led by Keisha Lee’s 15 points. Janelle Perez, who was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week earlier in the day Monday, added 13 points and seven assists against no turnovers and Presley Owens chipped in 11 points. NSU’s fifth starter, Tia Youngblood, scored four points, but had a key putback late in the game to stymie a Sam Houston surge. “You had four players in double figures and one just outside (Beatrice Attura, 8 points), 20 assists to 11 turnovers,” Stoehr said. “I thought we had a balanced attack. We felt like if we could get to 65 (points), that would be a good number for us. We were able to get to the free-throw line and knock down some free throws in the second half. I think it was big for us and obviously a big win to be able to come on the road and get a win here.” After shooting 34.4 percent (11-for-32) from the field in the first half, NSU connected on 48 percent of its second-half shots (12-for-25) and outscored Sam Houston, 39-27, in the final 20 minutes.
