Comfort Food in Manga FormBy RStringiniRin-Ne is the type of series that just kind of... is. It's a cute, fun, episodic adventure series that really isn't out to reshape the world of manga. All it sets out to do is tell some interesting and quirky ghost stories, and that is exactly what it does. None of the ghosts in question are particularly frightening, nor are any of the stories all that pulse pounding. There is no real violence, outside of a bit of slap stick, and there is no nudity or sex to speak of. It's just... simple entertainment.The cast of characters easily fall into their molds, and play their parts, and Takahashi's art serves the series well, balancing clean human characters with some truly cartoony ghosts. While I normally recommend starting any series from the beginning, with Rin-Ne you could easily drop in at any point and figure out what is going on. Still, you would be missing out, as the series has yet to grow stale nine volumes in. Some series begin to repeat themselves with their formula (I'm looking at you Case Closed, with your constant locked room mysteries that involve a piece of tape and a string), but Rin-Ne finds interesting ways to stay fresh without going to far out of its comfort zone.If you are looking for a pulse pounding adventure, or a horrific ghost story, look elsewhere. This isn't that. This series is light entertainment that just enjoys telling simple stories at a leisurely pace. It may change later on, but right now it is just content to be a bit of comforting entertainment that is easily accessible to all ages. About the AuthorThe spotlight on Rumiko Takahashi's career began in 1978 when she won an honorable mention in Shogakukan's annual New Comic Artist Contest for Those Selfish Aliens. Later that same year, her boy-meets-alien comedy series, Urusei Yatsura, was serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday. This phenomenally successful manga series was adapted into anime format and spawned a TV series and half a dozen theatrical-release movies, all incredibly popular in their own right. Takahashi followed up the success of her debut series with one blockbuster hit after anothermdash;Maison Ikkoku ran from 1980 to 1987, Ranma 1/2 from 1987 to 1996, and Inuyasha from 1996 to 2008. The dissertation then theorizes this aesthetics of atmosphere in music, animation, literature, and video art. The analysis explores the relationship between ambient media and landscape, dreams, the cosmos, domesticity and gender, the rhythms of urban life, cosubjectivity, and information overload. In each case, discussion focuses on how the aesthetics of atmosphere reimagines subjectivity vis-à-vis the surrounding environment, shifting the postindustrial self away from a social identity based in interpersonal relations and towards a more abstract sensing body developed with and through the moods afforded by mediated space.
