Veterans Street project nearing completion By Greg Fitzpatrick Correspondent SOUTHWICK – According to DPW Director Randy Brown, the Veterans Street project is nearing completion and there are just a few punch list items that need to be addressed in order to be finished. The project encompassed installing a new drainage system, water line, widening the road and then repaving Veterans Street, followed by loaming, seeding, and clean-up work. Upgrading the road was crucial as there was an inability on the old road to have two vehicles travel on the road safely. “The road looks great,” said Brown. “It will be much easier to travel down that road now.” There will also be an improvement to the water flow as the new piping is six inches versus the previous water line that was only one and a half inches. In October of 2017, Caracas Construction was awarded as the contractor for the project with the lowest bid at $327,380. The Veterans Street project was possible due to a Community Development Block Grant from the Baker-Polito Administration in August of 2016. The administration awarded $28 million in Construction for Veterans Street is nearing its completion. grants to 57 cities and towns. The town of Southwick received (Photo by Greg Fitzpatrick) $479,000 of funding for the project. PAGE 2 - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2018 WWW.THEWESTFIELDNEWS.COM THE WESTFIELD NEWS

Sit at the back of the movie theater, and it’s possible to see the appeal of ScreenX, the latest attempt to drag film lovers off the sofa and away from Netflix. Instead of one screen, there are three, creating a 270-degree view meant to add to the immersive experience you can’t get from the home TV. DADDY’S HOME Tony Rubino and Gary Markstein YOUR Contract Bridge HOROSCOPE By Jaqueline Bigar

HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018: This year you willingly open up and become even more authentic. The logic behind this change could vary from person to person. In general, others will respond much more positively to your new self- expression. If you are single, you meet By Steve Kelley and Jeff Parker people with ease. If you know what you DUSTIN want, developing that type of bond is very possible. If you are attached, expect more interactions with your significant other. You are charming by nature, so you likely will be met with enthusiasm. LIBRA encourag- es you to be easy on others.

The Stars Show the Kind of Day You’ll Have: 5-Dynamic; 4-Positive; 3-Average; 2-So-so; 1-Difficult

ARIES (March 21-April 19) HHHH You might think you are imagin- ing what is happening, but it is very much reality. A respected individual in your life seems to want his or her way, and won’t SCARY GARY Mark Buford hesitate to instigate a power play. Approach the situation from a centered point of view. Tonight: All smiles. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) HHHH Pace yourself. When you hit a problem, you will be able to sidestep the issue. Refuse to stop and get caught up in a topic of little interest to you. You will find that, by the end of the day, you feel more energized. Make time to visit with an older relative. Tonight: Go with the moment. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Crosswords HHHH You could be amazed by what is happening around you. You have many dif- DOGS of C-KENNEL Mick and Mason Mastroianni ferent ideas and conversations racing through your mind. If possible, avoid mak- ing a big decision right now, as there is so much mental and physical activity around you. Tonight: Let your hair down. CANCER (June 21-July 22) HHHHH You might be more focused on your personal life. You could be cooking up a storm as some visitors or friends drop by. Focus on what you enjoy, yet don’t forget obligations that you cannot dodge. Your juggling skills could be the key to your suc- cess. Tonight: Let the fun in. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) HHHH Your words seem to help others B.C. Mastroianni and Hart relax and not worry about the future. Make a point of staying in touch with a friend whom you rarely make time to see. Recognize that you have a limited amount of energy. Schedule some personal time for yourself. Tonight: Say what you feel. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) HHHH Your creativity soars when chal- lenged. A new pal could be the cause of a problem. This person’s involvement might be conscious, but his or her behavior is not. Approach this issue with diplomacy. Your instincts lead you down a new trail. Tonight: Be more direct. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) HHHH Despite a challenge, you open up. ONE BIG HAPPY Rick Detorie You might be dealing with a controlling individual. You will handle the situation well. Know that the best way to win a power play is to avoid playing. You will get the results you desire in nearly any project. Tonight: Invite a friend to join you. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) HHHH Be aware that you might not have the full story. No matter how you deal with a changing situation, you can expect more information to come forward. Know that nothing is written in stone, especially right now. Be clear about your vision and your ideas. Tonight: As you like it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) HHHHH Your optimism comes through, ANDY CAPP Mahoney, Goldsmith and Garnett especially when dealing with others. You infuse a close friend or associate with ener- gy and the willingness to take a risk. Schedule a get-together soon with someone at a distance. You both will be happy you did. Tonight: Be around people. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) HHHH Be willing to lie low for a short while before you take the lead. You might gain some important information or feed- back that way. Let others know that you Cryptoquip appreciate their suggestions. If you remain optimistic, you can complete a project. Tonight: Till the wee hours. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) HHH You could be bucking a trend, ZACK HILL John Deering and John Newcombe which you find uncomfortable. Emphasizing your goal at this moment will help you get through some of the present mayhem. You will be able to bypass someone else’s petti- ness quickly by keeping your distance. Tonight: Join a friend or loved one. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) HHHH Throw yourself completely into each interaction or project that you get involved with. You will be more efficient and make better choices as a result. You might need to make a decision regarding joint finances with a loved one. Tonight: Take a walk to relieve some stress.
