Rabbi Marvin Hier at Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem, June 2019

inston Churchill once said, “Strength is granted to us all when we are needed to serve great causes.” I believe one such cause is the Museum of Tolerance that we are now building in the heart of Jerusalem. It’s a Museum about our world, today and tomorrow. A Museum that honors heroes and challenges us to confront the anti- Semites and bigots that are now enveloping the world. Its message is direct and compelling.

Thousands of years ago, two rabbinic scholars debated the most important verse in the Bible. Rabbi Akiva chose W“Love thy neighbor as thyself” while Ben Azzai, chose a rather obscure verse from Genesis, “This is the book of the generations of Adam, on the day G-d created him… .” Media critics today would undoubtedly wonder how anyone could possibly choose, “This is the book of generations of Adam,” over the obvious, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.”

What is Ben Azzai’s point in extolling ‘generations’ above ‘neighborhood’? What Ben Azzai is telling us is something profound, most of us live out our lives in a narrow swath of space, where our values are entrusted only to those we know - those who look like us - those who are from the same economic strata, the same religious and political beliefs. In other words, our values do not extend beyond our neighborhoods.

Ben Azzai raises the bar, insisting that human beings have the capacity to reach beyond their comfort zones. That it is not enough to care for our neighborhoods, for our temples, churches or mosques. Each of us have obligations to our ‘generations’ - responsibilities that extend well beyond our zip codes - to pass on what is the best in us to those who will live on after us.

That is why we need the Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem. To remind the world that only man can redeem mankind!
