Tourism to Yellowstone National Park Creates $680.3 Million in Economic Benefits Report shows visitor spending supports 8,156 jobs in local economy

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY– A new (NPS) report shows that a record 4.25 million people visited Yellowstone National Park in 2016. These visitors spent $524.3 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 8,156 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $680.3 million.

“Yellowstone attracts people from around the country and the world who contribute significantly to the local economies in , Montana, and Idaho,” comments Superintendent Dan Wenk. “The economic benefits our neighbors enjoy are a direct result of preserving Yellowstone’s spectacular thermal features, abundant wildlife, and dramatic scenery. As we look to the future, preservation has to be the key value we consider as we address increasing visitation. Protecting the park also protects the regional tourism economy.”

The peer-reviewed visitor spending analysis was conducted by economists Catherine Cullinane Thomas of the U.S. Geological Survey and Lynne Koontz of the National Park Service. The report shows $18.4 billion of direct spending by 330.9 million park visitors in communities within 60 miles of a national park. This spending supported 318,000 jobs nationally; 271,544 of those jobs are found in gateway communities. The cumulative benefit to the U.S. economy was $34.9 billion.

According to the 2016 report, nationally most park visitor spending was for lodging (31.2 percent) followed by food and beverages (27.2 percent), gas and oil (11.7 percent), admissions and fees (10.2 percent), souvenirs and other ex- penses (9.7 percent), local transportation (7.4 percent), and 2017 Events camping fees (2.5 percent).

Snoopy Fun Run - April 29 The report authors also produced an interactive tool to make their findings more accessible. People who use the tool can May Day Tea Party- April 30 explore current year visitor spending, jobs, labor income, value added, and output effects by sector for national, state, GGCC Park to Paradise - May 6 and local economies. 2 3 Yellowstone Reminds Film Crews, Photographers and News Crews about Permit Requirements

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY –Yellowstone National Park encourages visitors who intend to capture images, videos, or sound recordings for commercial purposes to review our permit requirements before arriving in the park. Images, videos, and sound recordings captured in Yellowstone for personal use generally do not require a permit.

Permits are required for any individual, business, or organization (including non-profit groups and educational in- stitutions) involved with projects intended for a market audience or performed for compensation. These projects include, but are not limited to:

• Feature films or documentaries • Student films • Stock footage • Advertisements (including social media posts associated with a product or service) • Educational films • Interviews of park staff or other visitors • Television shows • Commercial timelapses • Professionally shot portraits • Contest entries

Commercial photographers using models, props, lighting or specialized equipment may be required to secure a per- mit. Portrait photographers who wish to conduct business in the park must apply for a Commercial Use Authoriza- tion (CUA).

Permits are not usually required for credentialed news organizations to cover park events in a timely fashion. Some news crews may require a permit if their work will impact park visitors or resources. News crews travelling through Yellowstone for business outside of the park must pay the park entrance fee.

National Park Service employees performing their duties in public may be photographed or recorded at any time, but interviews with or portraits of park staff must be ar- ranged prior to arrival in Yellowstone.

The use of unmanned aircraft systems (drones) for any purpose is strictly prohibited in all national park units, including Yellowstone.

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – Yellowstone National Park seeks comments from the public on a pro- posed project to reconstruct a segment of the East Entrance Road from Fishing Bridge to Indian Pond (3.2 miles). The proposed road reconstruction project would include the road, associated parking areas and turn- outs, Fishing Bridge, and Pelican Creek Bridge. The project would make the road compliant with engineering safety standards, widen the road to the parkwide standard of 30-feet, repair or replace the deteriorated bridges, restore wetland functions, and improve roadway and parking efficiency.

The Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed project evaluates two alternatives: a no action alterna- tive and one action alternative. In Alternative A, the no action alternative, the road, bridges, and parking areas would remain unchanged. Alternative B includes reconstructing the road to 30-feet, reconstructing the parking lots adjacent to the Fishing Bridge Museum and the Fishing Bridge General Store, adding turn lanes through the developed area of Fishing Bridge, rehabilitating or replacing the Fishing Bridge, and replacing the Pelican Creek Bridge and associated causeway with a 1,500 foot viaduct over the wetland. The EA analyzes soils, vegetation, wetlands, cultural resources, and threatened and endangered species.

If the proposed project is implemented, construction delays would normally be limited to 30 minutes. There may be some temporary road closures. These closures could consist of regular nighttime closures, and/or all day closures lasting up to a few days in duration. A complete road closure late in the season (after Labor Day) could be required.

Public comments will be collected until May 26, 2017, on the Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website at: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/FBIP. If you are unable to submit your comments online, mail comments to: Fishing Bridge to Indian Pond Reconstruction, P.O. Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming 82190. You may also hand deliver written comments to the Albright Visitor Center in Mammoth Hot Springs.

Public Comment Considerations • Comments will not be accepted by fax, email, or in any other way than those specified above. • Bulk comments in any format (hard copy or electronic) submitted on behalf of others will not be accepted. • Before including your address, phone number, email address, or other personal identifying information in your comment, be aware that your entire comment – including your personal identifying information – may be made public at any time. You may ask us to withhold your personal identifying information from public review, yet, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so. • The proposed project is an undertaking as outlined under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) (36 CRF § 800). As such, we welcome comments about historic properties or other cultural resources that fall within the project area.

The park is also completing compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act for this project, and is consulting with the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office on the proposed design.

Construction activity resumed from winter shut down for the Gardiner Gateway Phase 2 project. This week crews will be working on a rockery wall on the south side of west Main Street, in front of the century link building. Fencers will be on site to replace wooden fences and log rail at various locations on Main Street and continue the black fence at the end of East Park Street. Surveyors will be on site to provide staking for the Pa- vilion area and center line layout. A crew will be at the pavilion placing the roof.

In the next two weeks, a stripping crew will be on site to repaint all of Phase 1 and Phase 2, weather permit- ting. All parking lot stalls, centerlines, stop lines, and pavement markings will be painted with an epoxy mate- rial instead of water-based paint. At that time, we will coordinate with home owners and businesses about parking to ensure a quick and efficient process.

During these activities, pedestrians may be detoured to the other side of the street and localized one-ways will be utilized to allow concrete trucks and equipment to access the sidewalk. Traffic Control will be on site to flag and guide pedestrians. Questions and concerns can be addressed at the public update meeting on Monday at 5:30 PM in the Gardiner Community Center.
