25 March, 2020: CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS TO BE QUARANTINED ON ROTTNEST ISLAND IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA At least 800 people will be quarantined on Rottnest Island in Western Australia when a cruise ship carrying 1,500 people arrives in Fremantle on Friday. But the details of their quarantine – including how those people will be fed, where they will be housed and what will happen to the island’s 100 permanent residents – are yet to be finalized. The Western Australian premier, Mark McGowan, said on Wednesday that he would be “exercising the Rottnest option” for Australian citizens and residents aboard the Vasco da Gama, which was due to arrive in Fremantle on Friday. It follows the disastrous management in New South Wales of the cruise ship, from which at least 133 people have tested positive for Covid-19 and one person has died since it docked and allowed 2,700 passengers to disembark in Sydney on 19 March. The Vasco da Gama was meant to terminate its cruise in Fremantle and its 950 passengers previously had permission to disembark. 24 March, 2020: TWO COSTA CRUISE SHIPS WITH COVID-19 CASES HEAD FOR The and are headed for Italy, the current epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, with known coronavirus cases on board. Other port states have closed their doors, but Italy - where the health care system is already overloaded with COVID-19 cases - is still willing to accept Italian- flagged vessels. Last week, Costa Luminosa was allowed to call at , and French authorities confirmed that there were 36 cases of COVID-19 on board. Hundreds of other passengers were permitted to disembark at Marseille and fly back to their home countries, including 235 U.S. nationals; at least four of these American passengers have tested positive after returning to their homes, according to the Washington Post. Other passengers were required to stay on board Costa Luminosa for disembarkation in Savona, Italy. That process began on Saturday and is expected to be complete by Tuesday, according to local outlet Ferpress. About 550 crewmembers should also be disembarked by Wednesday, leaving only 100 asymptomatic seafarers on board. On board Costa Victoria, passengers reported Monday that the captain has informed them that one individual with coronavirus had been identified and removed from the ship. All passengers have been quarantined in their staterooms as a precautionary measure. The Costa Victoria is currently under way in the Mediterranean, bound for Civitavecchia (Rome). 24 March, 2020: 10 DEAD, OVER 800 TEST POSITIVE IN CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAKS ON , CDC SAYS More than 800 people who traveled on the two ill-fated cruise ships that were both quarantined tested positive for the coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its weekly report. Ten of those people who had been on the ships, the Diamond Princess and Grand Princess, have died. The CDC said in the report that people should avoid traveling on cruise ships during the coronavirus pandemic. "Outbreaks of COVID-19 on cruise ships pose a risk for rapid spread of disease beyond the voyage," according to the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on Monday. "Aggressive efforts are required to contain spread." Among the more than 3,700 passengers and crew aboard the Diamond Princess, 712 became infected with the coronavirus. The ship was put on temporary quarantine after a man who disembarked in Hong Kong was diagnosed with the virus. More than 60 passengers on one Grand Princess voyage stayed on the ship to embark on a second voyage. The CDC said many of the travelers from the first trip tested positive for the coronavirus and passed it to people on the second trip. 24 March, 2020: THE ENTIRE CRUISE INDUSTRY IS SCRAMBLING More than a week after it announced it would suspend operations, members of the Cruise Lines International Association are still scrambling to get passengers off ships – often in the nearest port that will allow them to do so – and send them home to wait out the virus. As of Tuesday morning, approximately 7.1%, or about 20 of CLIA's 277 member ships were still at sea and in the process of wrapping up voyages. The percentage of ships still in transit is down from 14% (or around 39 ships) Thursday. "This is a highly fluid situation, with numbers changing by the hour as cruise ships around the world are completing their voyages," Bari Golin-Blaugrund, CLIA's senior director of strategic communications, told USA TODAY. "The vast majority of the rest are either at port, anchored or repositioning," Golin-Blaugrund said. "CLIA members are focused on the safe and smooth return home of those onboard cruise ships that are currently at sea." "So far, British, Brazilian and German nationals/residents have disembarked, transferring from the ship to Lisbon Airport for their onward travel on MSC Cruises-provided charter flights," Goldfarb said Tuesday, the same day Cruickshanks and the other remaining passengers began disembarking. 24 March, 2020: VIRUS EXPLOSION IN AUSTRALIA REVIVES FEARS ABOUT CRUISE SHIPS Coronavirus cases in Australia from a single infected cruise ship exploded, highlighting again the dangers the vessels pose to governments fighting the spread of the virus. The ship accounts for 7.3% of all cases in the country, where infections are soaring. The Princess Cruises-operated vessel is just the latest cruise liner to become a hotbed for the virus. More than 700 people were infected on another Princess Cruises-run vessel off Japan in the early days of the outbreak. For many countries, the ships have become floating pariahs that are barred from ports. Some 2,647 passengers left the Ruby Princess in Sydney, even as 13 individuals on board suffered flu-like symptoms. With the first infections confirmed the next day, state and federal leaders blamed each other for the lapse, and health authorities raced to track down and isolate the thousands of people who left the boat and had dispersed across Australia.
