    No. 1 Iolanthe Company 1883 26 Feb. – 10 Mar. Manchester THEATRE ROYAL. Messrs. Gilbert and Sullivan have achieved so many perfectly legitimate successes, and in doing so have provided the theatre-going public with so much genuine and innocent enjoyment, that it is inevitable that any new production of theirs should be awaited with feelings of pleased interest. Between them they may be said to have hit upon an entirely new vein of dramatic and musical ore. Cynics may tell us that the vein is of the thinnest, and that it is being remorselessly overworked, but that is an ill-natured view of the situation which the great majority of people will very properly decline to entertain. It may be, indeed it is, true that both author and composer repeat themselves not infrequently, and that "Iolanthe" is only a further development of "Pinafore" and "Patience," and that musicians who have a clear and distinct knowledge of "Cox and Box" are able to put their fingers on the germ of almost every number of the latest of Mr. Sullivan's compositions. But there is nothing in all this to spoil our enjoyment of "Iolanthe." It may be judged on its own merits with most satisfactory results. It in no sense spoils our pleasure in listening to the charming nonsense of "Iolanthe" to be reminded that the idea of the amorous Lord Chancellor has been worked up in "Trial by Jury," or that the fairies of the former piece are the sisters, cousins, and aunts of "Pinafore," with the single addition of wings.

Whether you are settling down to a 'spell' in Fairyland with Iolanthe, or getting ready to party the night away with Orpheus in Hades, you are certainly in for a musical treat. After our resounding success with Ruddygore in 2003, we decided that a double production would be appropriate in 2004. Consequently, after a year of very hard work under our talented production team, we have both shows in one week at the King's. Alongside our rehearsals, Society members have been busy with our programme of concerts in aid of good causes, and these are tak- ing us from Stranraer to Dunkeld this season, with many places in between. 2003 drew to a close with the huge success of our Usher Hall concert with the Band of HM Royal Marines in aid of the King George's Fund for Sailors, and we hope to join the Band there again in November 2004. By that time, we will also be well into rehearsals for our next production, The Yeomen of the Guard, due at the King's in March 2005.

    Gilbert & Sullivan W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were an unlikely pair. While both yearned to be something else - Gilbert a "serious" playwright and Sullivan a "serious" composer - they collaborated between 1871 and 1896 on fourteen comic operas that, from small beginnings, won them fame, fortune and a place in posterity assured surely beyond their wildest dreams. Gilbert was an impatient, acerbic, crotchety man with a gift for writing that expressed itself first in humorous illustrated poems - The Bab Ballads - and then in stories, plays and comic operas. Sullivan, six years younger, was born into a musical family, studied at the Royal Academy of Music and Leipzig, after which, with some success, he took up composing. Both men cut their comic opera teeth with other collaborators: in the late 1860s, Gilbert wrote six short family-friendly comic operas or "entertainments" for Thomas Reed. Sullivan's first foray into the realm was Cox and Box (1866), written with librettist F. C. Burnard for an informal gathering of friends. Then, in 1871, producer John Hollingshead brought Gilbert and Sullivan together to produce a Christmas entertainment, Thespis, at his Gaiety Theatre, a large West End house. The piece was an extravaganza in which the classical Greek gods, grown elderly, are temporarily replaced by a troupe of 19th-century actors and actresses, one of whom is the eponymous Thespis, the Greek father of the drama. Its mixture of political satire and grand opera parody mimicked Offenbach's Orpheus In The Underworld and La Belle Helene, which (in translation) then dominated the English musical stage.
