Foulkes impresses coaches 9064503AA

BY COLIN THORSEN

Young Katie Foulkes has received lavish praise from her Northern Districts under-15 women’s cricket team coaches. The Te Awamutu 14-year-old was one of the stars of the fourth placed Fuiji Xerox ND side, coached by Elaine Nolan and Rhiana Vincent, at the Junior Secondary Girls Cricket Festival in Wanganui. Northern Districts went through the round-robin unbeaten with wins over Auckland, Taranaki, Wanganui and Canterbury. They suffered their first loss to tournament winners Wellington in the semi-finals, then went down to Manawatu U17s in the play off for third and fourth. Northern posted 74 in their allot- ted 20 overs, then fought hard to contain a strong Manawatu side who only reached their target in the penultimate 19th over — a testament to a young ND side containing many players who had never previously competed at a representative cricket tournament. ‘‘It was the first cricket trip away FEATURES INCLUDE: for many of them,’’ Nolan told the • 7 SEATS • 3-ZONE CLIMATE CONTROL • 20 INCH ALLOYS Courier. • 10 SPEAKER BOSE® AUDIO • REVERSING CAMERA ‘‘Some of them had only been playing for a year.’’ • ALL-WHEEL DRIVE • LEATHER TRIM Foulkes was one them. ‘‘Katie • 3 YEARS OF SCHEDULED SERVICING AT NO EXTRA COST** impressed us with her attacking fielding, never afraid to put her body Terms & conditions: *Free in-car DVD offer only valid for CX-9 vehicles produced prior to 30 September 2012 (CX9A), and for sales concluded between 1 January - 29 March 2013. on the line to save runs, and with her TC290113SP11 Promotional pricing includes GST but excludes on road costs (ORC). **mazdacare economical bowling.’’ KATIE FOULKES padded up ready to bat for the Northern Districts under- Genuine Scheduled Servicing valid for 3 years or 100,000km (whichever occurs Her best figures of two for four off 15 women’s cricket team. fi rst), together with a 3 year, unlimited kilometre warranty and Mazda On Call Roadside Assistance cover. Special Guest at Te Awamutu Country Variety Club this Saturday is country music legend Graeme McCardle (pictured). He needs no introduction as he has been here before on The Valray Country shows, and when he performs you could hear a pin drop. McCardle’s repertoire of songs is some- thing to marvel at — once he starts he has the audience eating out of his hand. He is visiting along with a 49 seater bus full of top entertainers from his Helensville Country Music Club making this a day to remember. Te Awamutu Club’s own top country band and own top country performers and all visitors are performing, so the show is starting at the earlier time of 12.30pm so that no one gets left out. For a day filled with great entertain- ment, get a group together and come along this Saturday Bible Chapel. Delicious after- noon tea and the chance to meet nice, friendly people included.
