Rev. Stephen Farrell We said our farewells to Stephen and Laura at special services in Christ Church and St. Nahi’s on Sunday 27th March. His many friends from Taney and further afield joined with his family and colleagues in Zion Parish Church, Rathgar on Monday 4th April to wish Rev. Stephen Farrell and his wife, Laura, every blessing as they began a new phase of ministry in our neighbouring parish. Stephen and Laura were with us in Taney for almost three years during which time he endeared himself to all. We know that Stephen brings to ministry tremendous gifts and a great capacity for friendship. We hope that he will carry with him happy memories of his first years in ministry amongst us. Our best wishes are with Stephen and Laura in their new parish.

General Synod First Prize for ‘Friends of Taney’ (www.fot.ie) We are delighted to report that the Friends of Taney website (www.fot.ie) won first prize in the Church of Ireland 2011 Magazine, Website and Social Media Competition. The award was made in the category ‘Most innovative use of Interactive Communication Technologies (ICT) or ‘social media’ over and beyond standard websites’. Congratulations are due to Tom Kennedy and Esther Walsh of www.fot.ie. Friends of Taney (www.fot.ie) is a joint initiative between Parish and Taney School PTA to generate business or work for parents/parishioners who have submitted their details. There is also a ‘Jobs offered’ window to advertise services/employment opportunities for those made redundant or out of work. This is a fine example of thinking and acting local which we hope may be replicated throughout the country. Knowing you can turn to a trusted ally quickly, especially when your needs are greatest is always comforting and encouraging. Thanks to a new website (fot.ie) we can now help each other.

Taney Village The Select Vestry and Taney Village Committee continue to work hard on Taney Village Project. At the Easter Vestry, it was reported that negotiations with a preferred partner were inconclusive at this point. Following meetings with the Representative Church Body and the Diocese and with continuing support from our Bank, AIB, the Select Vestry has confirmed its decision seeking that the two sites purchased by the Parish be transferred into Taney Village Limited subject to assurances that no residual obligations would remain with the Parish. With regard to the Glebe, the Select Vestry has always seen the transfer of the ‘Glebe’ land to Taney Village Limited as being consonant with the development of Taney Village. It is our hope that resolution of Taney Village, in these abnormal economic times for our country and for us all, will become apparent in the short term.

Parish Clean-Up Join us on Saturday 25th June from 9.30am in the Parish Centre grounds for clean-up of the wonderful grounds surrounding Christ Church and The Parish Centre. Bring along shovels brushes etc. and be assured of a fun morning filled with fresh air and exercise! page 4 Taney News Summer 2011 Dublin and Glendalough Diocesan Church Music Committee Website: www.churchmusicdublin.org e-mail: [email protected]

For almost twenty years, the Church Music Committee has provided a three- year modular training course for musicians working in the local church. There are three strands – individual organ tuition leading to an organ examination, training in working with choirs, and seminars exploring various aspects of the role of music in the Church’s liturgy. Students are expected to participate fully in all areas of the course. Those who complete each year satisfactorily are awarded a certificate by the Archbishop of Dublin.

Currently there are fourteen students, each sponsored by a parish in Dublin and Glendalough, including Taney. The cost of tuition is shared by the students, the parishes and the dioceses.

Applications to enter the course in September 2010 should be sent by 31st May 2010. Further information is available on the Committee’s website and from the Hon. Secretary, Mrs. Jacqueline Mullen on (01) 298 8923, [email protected]

The purpose of the course is to ensure a continuing supply of musicians for the local church. It is in the long-term interest of all parishes to make this practical training widely known. We hope you will encourage anyone who might be interested to enquire further.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT… Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop. Ovid (43 BC – AD 17/18)

WORDS OF WISDOM * Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue. * Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. * Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it. * Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker. * If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. * If you lend someone €20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. * It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. * Never buy a car you can’t push. * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on. * Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. * Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late. * The second mouse gets the cheese. * When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane. * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. * You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. * Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once * We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull, some have weird names, and all are different colours, but they all have to live in the same box. * A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

A REFLECTION I always think that Summer begins with the feast of Pentecost; a time we associate with the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Church. Pentecost is an opportunity to reflect on the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. As we embark on Summer 2011 may the Fruits of the Holy Spirit daily renew and refresh us and help us focus on the important things in life. The Fruits of the Holy Spirit

Love Joy Peace Longsuffering Kindness Goodness Faithfulness Gentleness Self-control I hope you all have a restful and enjoyable and ‘fruit-full’ Summer,

With every best wish,

Niall.

Junior Choir The Junior Choir is coming to the end of yet another busy year, which has seen them sing at a record number of Sunday services!

The highlight of the year was the musical Nativity, which we performed during the Christmas Family Gift Service. Everybody worked really hard on the day to make it a truly wonderful performance, despite the fact that we had missed so many rehearsals due to the winter weather!

In early March the choir took part in the Wesley Interschools Music Festival. This is always an exciting day and it is great fun to hear all the different choirs perform.

This summer we will lose a significant number of older choir members as they move on to Secondary school. The Junior Choir always welcomes new members, so if you are in 2nd class or above and can read well, do come and join us on Tuesday afternoons in the Parish Centre. For more information please contact Suzanne Chadwick on 087 757 4156.

Church & Children We remind you that the Crêche is open in the Parish Centre during Sunday services. However, for those young people who wish to remain in the Service there are Children’s Packs available from the Church Porches. We thank Pam Wallace who is maintaining these folders.

News from CMS Partner Deirdre (Lloyd) Zimmerman CMS Ireland Mission Associates Mark and Deirdre Zimmerman live and work in Kathmandu with their sons Zachary (8) and Benjamin (6). Deirdre highlights the value of quality school education for the missionary community and for the students themselves

What does it take for a family to live overseas as missionaries? A clear ‘call’ from God? An enthusiastic and prayerful home church? Foreign language fluency? Adequate financial support? Well- defined job assignments? Practical preparation for challenging living conditions? Actually, families may find themselves overseas without all these pieces in place … but the one thing most families wouldn’t dream of leaving home without, is a good plan for their children’s education.

And while there are a number of reasons why missionary families consider concluding their placement and leaving their mission location, it’s often the lack of continued good education options that leads to the decision to head back home.

We missionaries in Kathmandu are truly blessed with an excellent option for our children’s education: an international mission school established 25 years ago with the express aim of providing an alternative to families who were leaving the mission field early or sending young children to boarding school.

Today, Benjamin and Zachary attend Grades 2 and 4 of Kathmandu International Study Centre (KISC), which covers both primary and secondary education for children representing over 30 countries, many of them from missionary families.

It is a wonderful learning environment, providing not only quality education according to both British and American syllabuses, but also offering a rich, multi-cultural experience with loving Christian principles and practices. Many supporters express concern about our boys growing up in an ‘under-developed’ country like Nepal and are surprised by our response that we couldn’t imagine a better place for them to go to school!

When I was first sent to work as a nutritionist for United Mission to Nepal by CMS Ireland, I had no idea that 14 years later I would still be here … with a family! We don’t know how long we will remain in Nepal (and don’t plan to leave just yet), but we are very grateful to live here free of concerns for our boys’ education, either now or in the years ahead.
