The problem is that people just don't. It is now recognized that orange-red vegetables have high levels of carotene, a suspected anticancer substance; that citrus fruits contain vitamin C and bioflavonoids, important immune-strengthening nutrients; and that dark green leafy vegetables are rich in folic acid, a B-complex vitamin necessary for proper maintenance of red blood cells and the nervous system. Unfortunately, people do not generally eat the four to five portions of these fruits and vegetables recommended by the government public health agencies, the medical and nutri- tion professionals, and the community health activists. Health benefits can be realized only if people eat these impor- tant foods. In Juicing for Life, Cherie Calbom and Maureen Keane present juicing as an easy, convenient, and fun way of putting a diversity of flavorful, nutrient-packed beverages into the diet, making good nutrition accessible even to people who think they dislike fruits and vegetables. First, the authors explain the role of juicing in a well-balanced diet plan. I am Wconvinced that dietary changes—and, in particular, the consumption of large amounts of fresh fruit and vegetable Juices—have saved my life. This is why. I can't remember ever being really healthy and energetic, even as a child. In fact, I remember my grandmother telling me that I was sickly most of the time. I'm convinced my problems began before I was born. My grandmother said my mother had been sickly all her life, too. She died of cancer when I was six years old. As a child, I caught every cold that came along. I missed school often and always had to watch what I did so I wouldn't get sick. I remember going on a hike with a friend at about age twelve and feeling as though I was going to faint because I was so out of breath. What was surprising was that no doctor ever figured out why I was so tired and why I was always getting sick. Once a doctor thought I had a milk allergy, and when I stopped eating dairy products, I did improve. But that was the extent of the medical help. Not one health professional ever asked my grandmother what I was eating. And what I was eating would probably have killed a strong, healthy gorilla! I can't remember ever eating green vegetables in the winter. Summers offered an abundance of fresh vegetables from Grandma's garden, which I liked. But that was about the only light in the dim tunnel of my diet. The rest of the time I existed on candy bars, 2 Juicing for Life potato chips, cookies, sweet rolls, homemade white bread, cake, and potato soup. I did like potatoes. I didn't like any other vegetables, so my grandmother didn't serve them. She almost never cooked any kind of animal protein but eggs. So my diet was supplemented with Junk. When I was fourteen, I went to live with my aunt and uncle, and I remained with them throughout high school and my first year of college. My diet improved in their home, and so did my health. But my weight soared. By that time, 1 was truly addicted to sweets and ate more than my share, along with all the other foods provided in abundance. Finally, I couldn't stand being overweight, so I went on a starvation diet. I refused meals and snacked on cookies. I lost weight, and six months later almost died of pneumonia. In my-late teens. I discovered the wonders of vitamin and mineral pills and noticed a boost in my energy. But I still ate large quantities of sweets and rejected most vegetables. All through my twenties, I skated the line between sickness and health. My diet had improved somewhat and so had my energy. But I continued to eat too much of the wrong stuff, and I still caught lots of colds and viruses. I was so tired in the morning that I could barely crawl out of bed. Sometimes I felt I'd never make it through the workday because I was so fatigued. The real turn for the worse came around the time I turned thirty. I had developed a full-blown case of chronic fatigue syndrome that caused me to feel as though I had the flu most of the time. A low back pain kept getting worse. I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia, and later with Candida albicans (a sys- temic yeast infection). And it seemed I had PAIS thirty days out of the month! Finally, I went to a holistic medical doctor for allergy testing and walked out with a list of food allergies longer than my grocery list. I was so sick and fatigued, I finally decided to quit my job. I knew I had to do something quickly because I needed to work again. I was so sick and so tired of being sick that I was ready for any new approach. So I started looking through the books at health food stores and picked up several books that talked about a relationship between diet and health. Then I read Dr. Norman Walker's book about Juicing fresh fruits and veg- etables. Introduction 3 With nothing to lose but ill health, I bought a juicer, put my furniture in storage, and moved to my family's home for the summer. I first went on the five-day juice fast, drinking mostly vegetable juices and some fruit juices and eating no solid food. 1 followed the cleansing instructions by taking enemas every day to help eliminate toxins. For the duration of the summer, I followed a detoxification diet along with periodic juice fasts. By September, my symptoms were virtually gone. I had no more back pain, fatigue, or PMS. Many of my food allergies had disappeared as well. I felt like a new person. I had to follow the anti-Candida program to get rid of my yeast condition, but eventually that was gone too.

However, the term "unproven" is nonjudgmental and is, at best, a euphemism for the unsound therapies that are described in this chapter. After all, many of the newer methods of cancer treatment described in the previous chapter are, in some sense, "unproven" in that their precise role in clinical treatment remains uncertain. The distinguishing characteristics of unsound methods of cancer treatment (whether one wishes to label them unproven, unorthodox, nontraditional, or alternative therapies) are:. 1) promotion without sufficient preclinical data to justify use in patients, and 2) unmethodical treatment of patients that is incapable of detecting either meaningful responses or therapy-related side effects. Lyophilization technique helped to preserve the heat sensitive constituents and enhanced shelf-life of product. The lyophilized wheatgrass juice powder subjected to use for chemical, nutritional and antioxidant analysis. Chlorophyll, the main constituent of wheatgrass was analyzed as 7.46 mg/g and essential elements such as Fe, Mg, Zn, K and Mn having higher concentration in wheatgrass juice powder observed by AAS. The presence of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B4, B6, B10 and C detected at 254nm by following RP-HPLC-PDA method and their assistance to enhance antioxidant potential determined with DPPH assay. The presence of these amazing phytoconstituents in wheatgrass makes it one of the healthiest remedy to cure minor ailments to chronic disorders. It is commonly known as the “green blood” due to its high chlorophyll content which accounts for 70% of its chemical constituents. It contains a plethora of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and vital enzymes like superoxide dismutase and cytochrome oxidase. The vitamin content makes it an important adjuvant in anti-allergic and anti- asthmatic treatment, while the enzymes play a pivotal role in the anticancer approach of this herbal drug. A notable feature of the wheatgrass juice is its bioflavonoid content which are the naturally occurring antioxidants and ac- count for many of its clinical utilities such as management of inflammatory bowel disease and as a general detoxi- fier. However, the most remarkable feature of the wheatgrass juice is its high chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll bears structural similarity to hemoglobin and has been found to regenerate or act as a substitute of hemoglobin in hemoglobin deficiency conditions. This might be the reason behind the utility of wheatgrass in clinical conditions like thalassemia and hemolytic anemia.
