    Embargoed to 00.01, 23 July 2021 Press release The South Ken Green Trail – welcoming people and nature on Exhibition Road An algae factory, a nest-like timber mound and giant slices of a decommissioned wind turbine blade form a series of new ‘green interventions’ unveiled today on London’s Exhibition Road. Together they are supporting the post-pandemic recovery of London’s arts and science district, and demonstrating how plants, greenery and biodiversity can be creatively embedded in London’s public realm, reclaiming space for nature amidst the bustle of the capital. The free-to-visit installations will be in place for everyone to enjoy until October alongside a new walking trail connecting them with other planting and green spaces across the district. A downloadable trail map will help visitors to explore and discover hidden nature in the city, with activities and events throughout the summer providing inspiring ideas for a greener future. Design teams were chosen as part of a competition organised by the London Festival of Architecture and Discover South Kensington. Each has worked with one of the three cultural partner institutions – the V&A, Science Museum and Goethe-Institut – to develop installations that can inspire visitors to Exhibition Road, and to encourage them to further explore this welcoming, vibrant and diverse district. By bringing together leading design and current research in biodiversity and sustainability, the installations epitomise the area’s role in promoting debate and driving progress to address society’s most pressing challenges. ● The Algae Meadow has been created by Seyi Adelekun and Wayward, in collaboration with the V&A, and working with specialists from UCL and Imperial College London.

    MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES 229 Museums and galleries London has one of the greatest collections of museums and galleries in the world. The variety of subject, size, and interest, is vast. Nearly all of them are places where anyone in the family can find things of interest to see and do, and the facilities for children have been greatly improved. Most of the big museums and galleries in London are free. You only have to pay when there are special exhibitions. Some smaller ones charge for entry, generally fairly modestly. Much effort and thought has been put into providing improved access for disabled visitors. Staff members are usually helpful. Many museums and galleries now provide facilities for visitors who are partially sighted to touch and feel some exhibits. In addition, many have BSL tours. Many of these facilities are available on an occasional basis or by special arrangement, so it’s worth phoning in advance, and/or looking it up on the website. We haven’t tried to cover these in our descriptions, as we haven’t tried them out, and our reporting is based almost entirely on experience. Similarly, many museums and galleries have large print descriptions relating to the exhibits, which you can take around with you, and you can ask about this facility. Patience is occasionally required to get special step-free access routes opened up. Art collections and historical artefacts are valuable, and security is important, so it is not always possible to leave particular doors open. It may also take a little time to find the right person to operate platform stair lifts to bypass steps.

Background 1.1 In order to make a policy about what should, and should not be allowed on Exhibition Road in the future, we carried out two discussions with residents, visitors and local employees about how they would like to see Exhibition Road used in the future. The work was split in two halves: Exhibition Road south of the Cromwell Road Exhibition Road north of the Cromwell Road The discussion for the south end of the road was undertaken during the spring of 2010, and the discussion on the north end of the road in the spring of 2011. 1.2 This Key Decision paper brings the results of the two discussions together as the policy and best practice guidelines for Exhibition Road. The full results of both discussions are included as appendices to this report. 2. Principles 2.1 Exhibition Road will be a unique and beautiful space. By December, when we finish the works, it will be a place where culture and learning are accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds with a streetscape that makes that ambition a reality. The crowded, narrow pavements and heavy traffic will be a thing of the past. In their place we will have made an elegant kerb-free surface across the length and width of the road.
